Oimeru Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 So, will he make it? I really liked him when he first broke into the makuuchi, biut since then got really annoyed by his yo-yo-ing around, which more than once left the impression that he does not want to climb too high. Now, unless Kyokutenho manages a major rally, he seems to me like the logical candidate for a komusubi spot, alongside Asasekiryu -- unless 'shuzan decides to crumble again. So, make some wild predictions. Will he manage it again after nine years?
Andreas Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 yes he will... now that his maegashira streak is long enough to remain in sumo history practically forever, he will show his everything and become sanyaku again (and then ozeki... just joking)
Asojima Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Better to break his record for most consecutive basho as a maegashira by going out the top rather than going out the bottom. Go for the glory!!
ilovesumo Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 (edited) All I hope is, that this isn't his last try to shine....before intai :'-( He allways wanted to go with a bang... Edited May 16, 2006 by ilovesumo
Doitsuyama Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Better to break his record for most consecutive basho as a maegashira by going out the top rather than going out the bottom. Go for the glory!! Why "his" record? As far as I know, Higonoumi still holds it with 53 consecutive. Kyokushuzan still is 13 basho short...
AsaMoe Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 I have problems using the search function, but i think Asojima was refering to the record of most bashos in Makuuchi without kyujo. ( why do i not find a single artice with Kyokhushuzan and kyujo in Ozumo ? )

Meanwhile "most basho in makuuchi without kyujo" can't be either as for example Takatoriki had 65 basho in makuuchi without missing a bout.
Oimeru Posted May 16, 2006 Author Posted May 16, 2006 Also, interestingly enough, Kyokushuzan single-handedly defeated Sadogatake-beya on the previous three days. Well done, old man.
Chiyozakura Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 I don't have the exact data here but as Shuzan was last Komusubi in 1997 it should be around 9 years since that which makes about 54 basho.

Kyokushuzan is at 55 now.
Andreas Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 and thats the reason for his sanyaku run starting at the last, his 54th maegashira tournament (when he broke higonoumis record)
Jakusotsu Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Ozeki Kyokushuzan would be feasible in Hatsu'07. Last week I mentioned something like this in the chat, mostly joking I admit. But if You look at Miyabiyama, anything seems possible... That would be the biggest Bang! he could go with - Shuzan, ganbatte!! (ok, now that I've inevitably jinxed him, let's go back to normal)

But if You look at Miyabiyama, anything seems possible...That would be the biggest Bang! he could go with - Shuzan, ganbatte!! Heh...I've always assumed that he'd gently ride into the Juryo sunset once he has the Maegashira basho record, but I must admit that an Ozeki run is the more intriguing possibility... :-D
Asashosakari Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Miyabi has an open date, and the choices for it seem to be Shuzan or Wacky Mountain (Baruto in a real stretch!). Shuzan is #15 on Miyabiyama's potential list of opponents, so that's pretty much a mandatory bout considering their respective records.
Coo-cook Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Next basho everybody would figure out how to fight Shuzan (not giving him mawashi side grip) . After that everybody would forget how to fight Shuzan for a while. And then he would come again and show his old fox tricks (if he's not retired by then). I see a small cyclic path here. :-D Anyway, he is my favourite rikishi...and wish him two more wins at least.
Torideyama Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Ozeki Kyokushuzan would be feasible in Hatsu'07. Last week I mentioned something like this in the chat, mostly joking I admit. But if You look at Miyabiyama, anything seems possible...That would be the biggest Bang! he could go with - Shuzan, ganbatte!! (ok, now that I've inevitably jinxed him, let's go back to normal) I can see it now. Hatsu '07 Banzuke has 1 (maybe 2) Yokozuna and 8 (maybe 7 or 6) Ozeki. Miyabiyama gets his Ozeki back, Kyukoshuzan through a wild ride makes his. Kotomitsuki wakes up too, and gets his the same time as Shuzan. Chiyo and Kaio are still riding the kadoban wagon. Tochiazuma has come back from Sekiwake for the 3rd time. Kotooshu has already been kadoban once, and Hakuho (with good fortune and a long absence by Asashoryu) is a Yokozuna. Didn't we have a discussion a while back on what if everyone was an Ozeki? Torideyama
Jonosuke Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 Didn't someone tell us he was going to retire sometime this summer? Was there supposed to be a Monglian tour this summer? I think they could wait to have the tour till next summer as I am sure his streak will be still in tact by then.
Fujisan Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 I say hes about to implode starting tomorrow with Iwakiyama. (Clapping wildly...)
rhino Posted May 16, 2006 Posted May 16, 2006 I say hes about to implode starting tomorrow with Iwakiyama. (Clapping wildly...) Considering that Kyokushuzan seems to be trying to break the record for henka in this basho, and that Iwakiyama clearly hasn't realised that his dead-honest head down tachi-ai makes him a sitting duck, this one looks in the bag to me. (Henka!!!) I love Iwakiyama though- it would rule if Shoes-on tried a henka and got caught out by him, of all people. (Eating...)
