Randomitsuki Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 This post could have gone into Ozumo Discussions, Honbasho Talk, or Sumo Games, but since it is completely pointless, I've put it in this topic where it is in good company. For my entire sumo gaming career I had the feeling as if the sumo results of days 7, and particularly of nakabi, are the most surprising and unexpected of a basho. Recently, I even started betting against my intuition or my spreadsheets, just because nakabi seemed so weird to me, results-wise. After another nakabi where I started 2-12 for the 14 Juryo bouts in Sekitori-Toto (I'm pretty sure that's an all-time low even for me), I set out to substantiate my assumption about something going awry every nakabi. I took the archived results for Sumo Game (would have preferred Toto, but did not find accessible stats), and computed the average results per day across all basho since Kyushu 2000. And what did I find? Nothing. Well, in fact, it wasn't nothing. Actually, days 7 and 8 have the highest average points, instead of the lowest. There's nothing like the complete annihilation of a beautiful hypothesis in light of harsh reality. Or maybe I'm just nuts. For those interested (and who isn't? (Showing respect...) ), here is the breakdown by days. At least you can see from this that the last three days have lower scoring (due to the top-rankers fighting each other): Day 1: 61.3% correct Day 2: 63.9% correct Day 3: 64.9% correct Day 4: 62.4% correct Day 5: 62.1% correct Day 6: 64.5% correct Day 7: 65.2% correct Day 8: 64.9% correct Day 9: 62.7% correct Day 10: 62.4% correct Day 11: 61.5% correct Day 12: 61.5% correct Day 13: 58.0% correct Day 14: 57.2% correct Day 15: 57.6% correct Randomitsuki out. It seems to be perfectly correct as a meta-hypothesis, at least. (Showing respect...) Edited May 14, 2006 by Asashosakari

Asojima Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 For my entire sumo gaming career I had the feeling as if the sumo results of days 7, and particularly of nakabi, are the most surprising and unexpected of a basho. This may be because the torikumi iinkai may be making a special effort to make particularly interesting matchups for the weeekend matches. This in turn is making you squirm a bit more when making your predictions. (Showing respect...)
Asashosakari Posted May 14, 2006 Posted May 14, 2006 Randomitsuki's post made me finally enter the Sekiquad playing data in a spreadsheet as I've been meaning to for quite a while. With only 13 basho completed in the game's existence, the results aren't nearly as robust as the Sumo Game data, but I'm sure nobody will be surprised to hear that Day 7 has been the highest-scoring day in S4, too. (In a state of confusion...) Day 01 48,2% Day 02 53,6% Day 03 58,5% Day 04 50,3% Day 05 48,5% Day 06 52,8% Day 07 60,6% Day 08 49,1% Day 09 49,0% Day 10 49,3% Day 11 40,4% Day 12 39,6% Day 13 42,7% Day 14 43,5% Day 15 45,8%

Taka Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 (edited) because Randomitsuki OBVIOUSLY has too much time on his hands.... Don't pay attention to that! Personally I love this kind of stuff. The more sumo games stats the merrier I say! (In a state of confusion...) Edited May 15, 2006 by Taka
Randomitsuki Posted May 15, 2006 Author Posted May 15, 2006 because Randomitsuki OBVIOUSLY has too much time on his hands.... Don't pay attention to that! Personally I love this kind of stuff. The more sumo games stats the merrier I say! :-D Oh, never mind. Deluded by my modesty to put this into off-topic, some gentlemen do not recognize the uttermost importance of my inquiries. Imagine that I would have proven that on nakabi sumo results would clearly depart from the norm. Then I could have written guidebooks like "Overcoming nakabi madness" or "Things to do when it's nakabi" or "Don't worry - Day 9 will be better", and sold copies to both rikishi and sumo gamers. I'd be a millionaire in no time! And while you are watching the livestream in your shabby little homes, I could watch the livestream while cruising my yacht through the Caribbean! Mwuahahahaha!!! (In a state of confusion...)
Gernobono Posted May 15, 2006 Posted May 15, 2006 maybe randomitsuki is right in some way.... as all others are rather good on nakabi his mediocre entries seem to be worse compared to others....
