Phoenix Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 What is up with Ama's back?! He looks like he was attacted by a big squid or a runaway vaccumn cleaner! Talk about a bad skin day!
Shimpu Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 (edited) Try this : Ama's acne Search option is your friend (Enjoying a beer...) Edited May 7, 2006 by Shimpu
Araiguma_Rascal Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 It's not acne, it's Chinese medicine. It's done with vacuum cups, but I don't know the word for it. I tried to search for a web page that explains it, but I don't know the name of it.
Araiguma_Rascal Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 I found one link with a picture of the cups, but I still don't know the name of it yet. Link
Araiguma_Rascal Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 It's not moxibustion, but it's in the same tradition, I think, with moxibustion and acupuncture. The suction cups essentially leave large hickeys.
Araiguma_Rascal Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 I found it. The English word for it is "Fire Cupping."

Well that explains it then. I sort of had that idea, just didn't realize they still did that. It just looked so strange! Large polka dots!
Coo-cook Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 (edited) Yeah. It's that "fire cupping" thing. Very popular treatment in Mongolia for every kind of illnesses and weaknesses. It improves blood circulation .....used as a massage therapy as well. Blood spots (hematoma?) should disappear within 3-4 days. Was it (and still is?) a part of traditional European volks medicine too? Edited May 7, 2006 by Coo-cook
Jejima Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 I had this done to me in China about two months back. Never again. (Blushing...) :-) B-)

Yes it was popular in Europe in the old times and nowadays it's coming back in alternative practises and naturopathy - with good results as I read in a magazine.
Kishinoyama Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 It's called cupping. Thank you for the link Exil. This site mentions that this cupping can be used "in the treatment of respiratory diseases such as the common cold, pneumonia, and bronchitis. Cupping is also used to treat back, neck, shoulder, and other musculoskeletal pain". I have not heard anything about Ama having a cold so I am assuming he has some normal sumo aches and pains (Blushing...)
Odoriou Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 What is up with Ama's back?! He looks like he was attacted by a big squid or a runaway vaccumn cleaner! Talk about a bad skin day! Jep, obviously a vacuum cleaner accident. ;-)
Cammy Posted May 7, 2006 Posted May 7, 2006 (edited) No he was really attacked by a squid...that used a vacuum cleaner against him ;-) Edited May 7, 2006 by Cammy
