Baruto's tachiai is not as high as Kotooushuu's, so it shouldn't be a major problem. Today he ran into one of the best technicians in sumo. Tochinohana was calm, and kept himself low throughout the bout. And excellent example was just before the win. Baruto tried a tremendous sukui-nage heave, which actually lifted Tochinohana into the air. But Tochinohana kept his center of gravity low, and his feet connected to the ground: when he landed, his left foot slid right into the tawara, which he used to push Baruto out. Baruto's heave was extremely strong, but in doing so he had to bring his body and his center of gravity up, providing Tochinohana with the window for a win.

Great match.

Interesting strategy by Tochinohana there...basically raising Baruto up so far that he can't complete his favored overarm grip to the back of Tochi's mawashi, then using his deep morozashi to drive Bart out. Somebody pointed out in the Day 1 chat that Bart's insistence on that overarm grip would give mae-mitsu specialists like Ama an advantage against him, but the attack displayed by Tochinohana here looks like an even bigger potential danger.

Of course, Tochinohana was the first one in quite a while who managed to do both things properly (prevent Bart's grip and get the morozashi himself), with several others trying and failing before, but you do have to wonder how much more adept Makuuchi veterans will be at exploiting that than his lower division opponents were.

Is this similiar to what Ozeki Takanonami used to do quite frequently when he was a rikishi (Blushing...). Of course I'm talking about Baruto using the overarm grip.... (Blushing...)

I have added the Baruto bout from today along with some more bouts from today to my movies page.

Edit: I have added Homasho and others. Don't miss Kasugao's win with authority!

In the first seconds I was tremendously afraid of because Baruto was again up, upright and quite puzzled. But important is good finish.

All the credit to Baruto for his strength and great record but it isn't that easy in makuuchi and talks about "serious yusho contender" are quite an exaggeration. He lost to Kitazakura in fair favourite yotsu bout where both hand their left hand outside grip. Excellent bout by both behemoths. That was Baruto's sumo.

As much as I do like Baruto, as a Kitazakura fan that bout was tremendously satisfying to watch. Old man showing the young kid he's still got some way to go. (Nodding yes...)

Perhaps I overestimated him a little bit based on his recent streak of wins, which ran to 21 if you don't count the basho when he had appendicitis. But I still expect a very solid basho from him. Kitazakura has been hot lately and he certainly got himself psyched up for this match, and it was close.

Completely overpowered his opponent almost like a poor mans akebono.
Looking at the recent poor man's Akebono, Baruto might be slightly annoyed.

I am normally easily confused but this comment has really got me confused B-) (Kensho parade...) Edited by Kishinoyama

Wow, that was some strong sumo by baruto today.

On a side note, this is the best ive seen hakurozan in about 3-4 basho. Even in his losses hes looking strong.

do you know the phrase poor mans XXXX? Its like a player or athlete with similar qualities or skills as another GREAT guy, just not on as big a scale.

Like akebono would have some crazy thrusts back in the day where he would send people flying into the third row. Baruto showed a flash of that power in yesterdays bout, throwing out his guy with relative ease, just not on the same level as akebono. Thus, hes like a poor mans akebono.

Right. I guess his Shisho talked to him about his "sumo-style" (Doing a wave...)

This sounds more like a comment from a hockey commentator when he exclaims "Superb save!" when the goalie makes a save showing some excess moves to which another commentator adds with a laconic voice "Basic save...". Katayama-bout was just a move aside and then a regular push when Katayama turned close to tawara. Similar incidents seen in sumo all the time in all divisions. Nothing spectacular or powerful in that. Just basic finishing move.

Today the tsuridashi looked cool and that is probably something he will utilize in the future too. He is strong and he has that unique reach which he can use well to lift his foes. Takanonami was about the same height and used to carry his foes around a lot from kime-position. Baruto undoubtedly wins with tsuridashi in the future too. Actually it was yorikiri today since Hakurozan landed before the tawara.

Yes, that was a beautiful bout!

But Baruto was kind of limping after this powerful tsuri... It seems that when Hakurozan landed Baruto may have felt too much pressure on one of his legs... Hopefully nothing serious.

Well, I have not heard it mentioned by anyone. If he is injured then it is being kept a secret. But I don't think he was injured (Yucky...) .
