Randomitsuki Posted April 25, 2006 Posted April 25, 2006 Welcome to another round of the Makushita Game! Feel free to participate, there's still lots of space in Makuuchi division. The deadline is shonichi 8 AM JST. When making your picks, please do not forget that we have a Makushita Tsukedashi rikishi this time. His name is Shimoda, and as ms15Td he belongs into the fourth bracket. ================================== Here are the rules in short form: 1) Slice the Makushita banzuke into 15 equal brackets (ms1-ms4, ms5-ms8 etc.). 2) Pick one rikishi from each bracket. 3) Send your selection to me via e-mail (can be accessed here). 4) Done. Here are some rules for the rule-minded: 1) You collect win points for your picked rikishi, and these win points will be converted into a win-loss record. If a rikishi gets 4 wins in a basho, this will give 0.5 win point to a player's tally. Every additional win of a rikishi adds another 0.5 win point, so a 7-0 rikishi will net 2 win points. The sum total of win points across 15 rikishi is the win-loss record for a player (if necesseary it will be rounded up or down based on banzuke requirements). 2) The player with the most win points gets the yusho. In case of a tie, brackets will be compared pair-wise (in descending order down the banzuke) until a winner can be determined. 3) Sansho prizes are awarded as follows (all sansho require a KK): 3a) Shukun-sho for the player who picked the yusho winner. In case of a tie, other 7-0 rikishi will be compared, followed by 6-1 rikishi in descending order etc., until a winner can be determined. 3b) Kanto-sho for the player whose rikishi have netted the most wins. 3c) Gino-sho: for the player with the most unusual picks - total sum of (wins of a rikishi divided by number of players who picked him). 4) If a player cannot participate in a basho, this will be counted as a 7-8 record (no kosho application necessary). The second consecutive kyujo basho will be counted as 0-0-15, and the third kyujo in a row leads to the retirement of the player. 5) Kyujo rikishi: in all likelihood players will be informed about kyujo rikishi once they are announced. Players can change their picks accordingly. Because there is little time between kyujo announcements and the start of the basho, players are allowed to replace a kyujo rikishi with a 0-0 rikishi or 0-1 rikishi until day 2 of the basho (8 AM JST). 6) Promotions (these rules might change): 6a) Guaranteed promotion to komusubi: 9-6 for M1, 10-5 for M2, 11-4 for M3, etc. 6b) Guaranteed promotion to sekiwake: 9-6 for Ke, 10-5 for Kw, 11-4 for M1, 12-3 for M2, 13-2 for M3 etc. 6c) Ozeki promotion requirements: three double-digit KK in a row; Sekiwake rank at the crucial third basho; 34 wins from three basho in case of a shin-Sekiwake (33 wins for an experienced Sekiwake). 6d) Yokozuna promotion: Two consecutive yusho and overall good manners.
Doitsuyama Posted April 25, 2006 Posted April 25, 2006 I am glad that no ozeki demotion rules exist, even for the rule-minded. (Laughing...)

Randomitsuki Posted May 8, 2006 Author Posted May 8, 2006 The deadline for replacement picks has passed, so here are some selection stats. We had 30 players, a new record for participation. Randomitsuki Posted May 8, 2006 Author Posted May 8, 2006 Standings after day 2: Quite a number of popular rikishi lost their first bout, notably the highly-favored ex-sekitori Tamaasuka and Shiraishi. Among the popular losers were also the new hopes Kadomoto, Hakuba, and Sawai. Four players are tied for the lead, among them Sekiwake Itachi (who had the most "average" pick for the second time in a row) and shin-Komusubi Takamueda. Randomitsuki Posted May 10, 2006 Author Posted May 10, 2006 (edited) Standings after day 4: While nobody has crossed the KK-line yet, many players are already listed as 7-8. Just as a reminder, those scores are computed on the basis that your picks will win half of their remaining bouts and lose the other half (which, in fact, would be difficult with five bouts to go, but notwithstanding...). Since most picks were good picks, there is considerable hope for everyone to boost the standings a little further. Currently Sekiwake Susanoo and Yubiquitoyama are on top of the standings with Asashosakari being a lone third. Three of the players who belonged to the leading quartet after day 2 are now tied for fourth place, only Takamueda went down a notch further. Randomitsuki Posted May 12, 2006 Author Posted May 12, 2006 Standings after day 6: After three bouts per rikishi the usual suspects stay on course. Six out of eight sanyaku players are currently in the top 8. Only Profomisakari and Kintamayama are trailing a little bit. Itachi seems to confirm the hypothesis that the best players are those who can foresee the average pick of other players. He is even in double-digits right now. Asashosakari and Susanoo are the chase pack, whereas Ozeki Doitsuyama is about to get out of kadoban status. If high scoring continues we'll have to round final results down. So beware, players with 7.5 win points! Randomitsuki Posted May 14, 2006 Author Posted May 14, 2006 Standings after nakabi: With Wakanoho and some other crowd favorites losing, standings dropped a little bit. E.g., after day 7 Itachi was clearly in the lead with an impressive 11-4 score. Today, however, he is only in third place with an estimated 9-6 score. New leader is Shiyonofuji aka Kaiopectate aka The Killer Sock Monkey. Great job! Sekiwake Susanoo stays in second place, whereas Sekiwake Itachi and Komusubi Asashosakari are tied for third. Randomitsuki Posted May 16, 2006 Author Posted May 16, 2006 Standings after day 10: Currently we have rather balanced scoring. However, this is going to change if the bunch of 7-8 players manages to cross the KK line. Itachi regains the lead, but Shiyonofuji doesn't let loose and finds himself in second place. Randomitsuki Posted May 18, 2006 Author Posted May 18, 2006 Standings after day 12: More than half of the players are currently in KK territory, so prepare to get your final results rounded down. It looks pretty much as if we already have a winner here. At least Komusubi Asashosakari leads the standings by a significant margin. Unfortunately I do not have the time to consider all the intricacies of losing or not losing, but Shiyonofuji and Susanoo are already four wins behind. Kadoban-Ozeki Doitsuyama ran into some problems in the last two days, so the rank is still not secured. Very impressive performance is shown by Chiyonohana in his sophomore stint. The winner of Haru Basho already looks like a candidate for the second double-digit performance in a row. Unfortunately he is still too low on the banzuke for an Ozeki run at Nagoya Basho. All sansho races are wide open. Asashosakari leads the shukun-sho standings on the fourth tie-breaker; for kanto-sho we have a three-way tie; and in gino-sho Tamanaogijima leads with a nothingth in front of Yubiquitoyama. Doitsuyama Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 I haven't had a look at the torikumi for day 14, but it might be that kadoban-Ozeki Doitsuyama isn't safe from demotion yet. No, I'm not. If I counted correctly I have 6.5 points sure with six chances at another half point. No internal matchup for those six despite five of them at 4-2 and five of the six will be tomorrow with Shimada, Fukuoka, Tamamitsukuni, Kaido and Kimurayama. Wakanoho on senshuraku might be my last hope.
Randomitsuki Posted May 20, 2006 Author Posted May 20, 2006 Standings after day 14: For most players the type of -koshi is already decided. But some still have to wait until senshuraku. Not quite sure of KK are Meyeryu and Kaihayaiha, Holleshoryu, Zeokage, and kadoban-Ozeki Doitsuyama. Not quite sure of MK are Torideyama, Zenjimoto, Tamanaogijima, Heikotoriki, and maybe even aderechelsea. Results will be rounded down if more than 50% of participants have 7.5 win points or more. Asashosakari is the favorite to get the shukun-sho. However, in case that Kageyama loses AND Wakanoho wins AND Kazafuzan wins the shukun-sho would go to Zenjimoto. Susanoo has the kanto-sho for sure already. If Kakureizan wins tomorrow, Asashosakari also gets the kanto-sho. Gino-sho computations are too difficult for me, but I guess that sashimaru is already through. Randomitsuki Posted May 21, 2006 Author Posted May 21, 2006 Final standings: Wakanoho won his last bout, thereby securing a safe Ozeki spot for Doitsuyama. In the end, Asashosakari finishes quite clearly in front of Susanoo who held third-placed Randomitsuki at bay. All three will enjoy promotion to Sekiwake and dream of beginning an Ozeki campaign. In the sansho standings the unlikely chain of events that I talked about yesterday actually materialized, thus giving Zenjimoto not only the KK, but also the shukun-sho along the way. Asashosakari and Susanoo are tied for kanto-sho, whereas sashimaru grabs the gino-sho. Randomitsuki Posted May 21, 2006 Author Posted May 21, 2006 And here is the Nagoya Banzuke 2006: Asashosakari, Susanoo, and Randomitsuki were promoted to Sekiwake. Takamueda keeps his Komusubi rank, with the second Komusubi spot awarded to streaky Chiyonohana. Some parts of the banzuke were quite nightmarish to create. 9 players were nominally vying for a spot between M3 and M5, so some pretty tough demotions had to be made. Better luck next time!
