woo hoo americans went undefeated and got all 3 golds! (the middle weight who got gold is the guy i beat in one of the videos below, doug) Trent won lightweight and Karl won heavyweight. Ill try to find the newspaper links.

Was this a strong tournament?Sounds like a lotta fun. How are the NZ , AUS and USA teams rated on a world sumo level?

It wasn't a particularly strong tournament as there weren't a lot of senior competitors and none have been ranked highly at World Championships. All three teams are regular competitors and the USA is probably the most competitive of the three. The 3 athletes that attended might represent the USA in the World Champs later this year but they need to win their respective weight classes at the US National competition to qualify. The USA was really strong about 10 years ago in the early World Champs but other countries (particularly Eastern European countries) are now stronger.

yes, id definately like to go next year. Once you guys get set 100% information let me know so that i can get my tickets early.

Trent is a 2 or three time light weight champion of USA. Hes pretty good for the americans. But recently didnt make it to the quarterfinals at the US Open because of tough competition from the mongolian team.

Carl is a beast, and one of the most experienced american sumo guys i believe. Hes a former US national champion, but wasnt last year. He didnt place at the recent US open. Doug has never been a national champion but is one of the most experienced middleweights in the US, doing sumo since 2000 or 2001 i think. The current middleweight USA champion is troy collins, and if doug would go against him 40 times, troy would probably win 40 times, thats how good troy is. Probably the best middleweight usa has ever had. But he hasnt done well at the worlds...thing is like mentioned the european teams are just so strong now.

Thans for the info. One question Why are the European wrestlers sp strong then?

Thans for the info. One question Why are the European wrestlers sp strong then?

A number of reasons and they are different in each contry. Some of them include: Some very good athletes and a number with a lot of experience. Strength and speed. Regular competition and training against different athletes, not just those from your club. Financial incentives (like training grants) for good results and access to other helpful things like weight trainers and nutritionists at reduced cost or for free. The incorporation of sumo into national sporting bodies and treating them like other strength-sport athletes. The cross-over of elite athletes in judo or wrestling into sumo (either fulltime or part-time).

Remember, some of the countries in Europe fund their Olympic sports programmes well. Also a number of sports get good coverage and have decent funding so that not only pro sports proliferate (unlike in the US).

OK, we've strayed off topic with the NZ sumo tournament. I'm locking this topic. If you want to add anything about the NZ tournament, like photos, news links or other comments that are specific to the tournament then send me a PM and I'll reopen it.

If you want to ask any questions or start a discussion about something else then start a new thread in this Amasumo sub-forum. Remember that you can always search the database to see what has been talked about before (like steroids) by using keywords.

I'm glad to see there is so much interest in amateur sumo at the moment. Long may it continue!!
