Flying_Monkey Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Ladies and Gentlemen, the Future Yokozuna... Great build-up, great bout... really did look like two Yokozuna out there. And the best man won.
yamaneko Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Talk about deja vu. Kotooshu two basho ago clinched his promotion to ozeki with a dominating win over asashoryu, and today hakuho does the same thing. Hakuho looks like a new guy compared to what i saw from him last year. He is looking as unstoppable as asashoryu was last year.
Flying_Monkey Posted March 22, 2006 Author Posted March 22, 2006 I guess that puts paid to talk about his nerves at least...
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 So tomorrow a very interesting schedule. Tochiazuma vs Hakuho is as huge bout that can go either way (well now there are people who will say that Hakuho will never lose a single bout against anyone of course..). Azuma lost badly today but hopefully gets more into his own sumo tomorrow. KaioU-Shoryu is a big bout for both and while KaioU is not genki and really would need to subdue Shoryu's movements immediately, at least there is a lot at stake for both of them. Besides KaioU's schedule is the worst it can be. Asashoryu, Hakuho and his nigate Kotomitsuki. Hakuho sure is stable. He beat Shoryu from the right not getting his left hand outside at all. Shoryu can't go on bitching about Hakuho's sumo this time (as opposed to Hatsu basho when he was all upset and considered that kotenage a personal insult to say the least).
Flying_Monkey Posted March 22, 2006 Author Posted March 22, 2006 So tomorrow a very interesting schedule. Tochiazuma vs Hakuho is as huge bout that can go either way (well now there are people who will say that Hakuho will never lose a single bout against anyone of course..). I agree on this. I am not underrating Tochiazuma at all - and let's face it, he beat Hakuho last time, albeit with a slightly controversial win that should at least have been reviewed. He will also be very determined because another loss and that is defrinitely it for his Yokozuna bid (if it's not over already...). However, it is clear that in THIS basho at least, Hakuho is looking well-nigh unbeatable, and it will take something special to hand him his first loss. At the moment, Tochiazuma is looking good, but not special. We shall see though. I don't disrespect anyone enough to write them off (well, maybe Hokutoriki...)
sashimaru Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 ...We shall see though. I don't disrespect anyone enough to write them off (well, maybe Hokutoriki...) Hokutoriki just enjoys his vacation-basho. (Hugging...)
Ikkakujuu Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 However, it is clear that in THIS basho at least, Hakuho is looking well-nigh unbeatable, and it will take something special to hand him his first loss. Actually in this basho noone can beat Hakuho except himself (highly unlikely though). He is on his way to zensho plus ozeki promotion. Respect for him. Nothing against Hakuho but I hope that Kaio will win against him (again highly unlikely). I don't want to see his intai yet. Go Kaio. I want 5 ozekis in may :)
Joeblack Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Of all these years, somebody finally stood up and pose some challenge to Asashoryu. The guy is Hakuho, not Kotooshu nor all other I have seen. Hakuho demonstrated that he can beat Asashoryu using technique and strength with repeating success. I am glad to see the day coming. I hope there be a playoff between Asashoryu and Hakuho. I want to see if Hakuho has the ability to defeat Asa twice in the same tournament. (Hugging...)
aderechelsea Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 well if this was not Ozeki quality sumo ... i don't know what is. Hakuho is on fire. Whether we like it or not he is back from his injury and he will be the next Ozeki. I am avoiding to talk about Yokozuna promotion untill i see a (zensho) yusho. He looks unbeatable though .... if there is someone that can beat him we will find out tomorrow. After that ... it is a touchdown on open field .... i am very happy.
ilovesumo Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 (edited) I feel like (Hugging...) ... YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA (Clapping wildly...) (Clapping wildly...) Edited March 22, 2006 by ilovesumo
TheShadow Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 Was at the match! It was incredible! I managed to grab an extra ticket in a box seat from a couple of friendly Canadians for 1/2 price. The highlight was watching Hakuho win and everyone go insane and throw the zabuton! Fantastic! Doesn't get any better! I was using digital zoom. Sorry about the pic being blurry. (Hugging...)
Bishonohana Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 It was a great match!!! And the BEST man won! (Yusho winner...) (Yusho winner...) (Yusho winner...) But the Basho isn't over yet.... :-)
Mattjila Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 well if this was not Ozeki quality sumo ... i don't know what is.Hakuho is on fire. Yeah, I'm waiting for Jonosuke's patented Rikishi Talk (or Rik'shi for our SML brethren). I'm hoping the rjijcho, et al, have some good words for Hakuho. And after that bout, I'm guessing they *really* hope there is a similar kettei-sen between Hakuho and Asashoryu.
Guest takamiyama2 Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 :-) Can anyone tell me why after Asahoryo wins and collects his prizes, he always looks to his left before leaving the dohyo
Jakusotsu Posted March 22, 2006 Posted March 22, 2006 (Yusho winner...) Can anyone tell me why after Asahoryo wins and collects his prizes, he always looks to his left before leaving the dohyoWelcome to the forum and congratulations for digging up one of the most thoroughly decomposed horse carcasses to introduce Yourself. :-) (no offence) (Yusho winner...) short answer: only he knows
Coo-cook Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 I just saw the stream. The way Asashoryu fell to Hakuho, he (Asa) was so tensed and inflexible. Hakuho's timing was brilliant and Asa had no chanse relaxing and going to offensive (although he had his grips). By the way ,Hakuho used same technic as his father often used to do (in Mongolian wrestling).
Tetsuzukiyama Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 (edited) I think we're seeing a different Hakuho now that he's put the weight on a bit and isn't worried about being pushed around. His footwork has always been great, he's had time to experiment and now he's proving that he's got what it takes to stand toe to toe with Asashoryu. Straight, right up there, right in his face, gonna beat that son-of-a-gun 'cause I'm a bigger dude Sumo. Love it. This has never happened to the Yokozuna, it's true! Kotooshu is still a relative newcomer and is still adjusting to the whole moving forward idea, after all. He's going to be riding pretty high after this basho and will have double the incentive to come out gunning next time. Otherwise I think Asashoryu is relatively safe until Baruto comes a-knockin', but two bigger rivals are two too many I'm sure. Edited March 23, 2006 by Tetsuzukiyama
Jonosuke Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 In yesterday's NHK Japanese sumo broadcast, former yokozuna Kitanofuji, their color for the night asked Fujii announcer how many did Hakuho win consecutively now. Fujii announcer responded by saying, he has been winning since Day 9 of the last basho, so that would make 18 consecutive wins. Kitanofuji then explained himself by saying he asked because he wondered if this could be the start of 69 consecutive wins. Many think Hakuho already has a demeanor of yokozuna - some thinks he looks like yokozuna Takanohana, others think he looks like Kitanoumi. Personally I feel he looks most like Futabayama. He will have a glorious yokozuna career, equaling that of the great Futabayama. Can you imagine seeing an ozeki bout between healthy Kotooshu and Hakuho for the next several bashos? Can you imagine seeing a yokozuna bout between Hakuho and Asashoryu for the next several years? Ozumo will be hot!
Tetsuzukiyama Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 Can you imagine seeing an ozeki bout between healthy Kotooshu and Hakuho for the next several bashos? I had new girlfriend sitting with me when I watched the latest Hack-Koto bout for the first time. She couldn't figure out why I was leaping around the room.
Shibouyama Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 (edited) Ozumo will be hot! Yes, in OUR minds. However, I don't think the overall popularity of sumo in Japan is going to go up all that much. Old fans may return, but I don't expect a huge rush of new fans. At least I hope not. If the Haru Basho gets sold out or near to it, I won't be able to sneak into a box seat after buying a cheaper ticket. (Sign of approval) Baseball and football (soccer) will continue to overshadow sumo as the most popular sports of Japan. When I went to the basho on the 21st (the Vernal Equinox), I got there about 1:30. Maybe mid-makushita time and there were a bunch of people in one of the lobbies watching the World Baseball Championships on t.v. Edited March 23, 2006 by Shibouyama

Well, yes, random second-round ATP tennis matches don't tend to draw well when there's a soccer World Cup game on at the same time, either. I'm not sure what you're trying to indicate here.
Kishinoyama Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 Anyone still think Asashoryu is going to win 40 or 50 tournaments (as was suggested on the sml)? Hakuho will take some of those potential yusho away. I have my fingers crossed for Baruto to rise to the challenge someday and I think Kotooshu, once he has settled into the Ozeki rank, is going to challenge for the yusho quite often. (Shaking head...)

My above example may not be the best, but... I didn't try to indicate anything. I stated clearly that although sumo's popularity may increase a bit, it will (IMO) continue to be a not very popular sport in Japan, as it currently is.
