Shibouyama Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 But, the photo thread elsewhere has many, many photos. Or, for example, the daily basho pics are pretty numerous. Why can't I post lots of pics also in any particular thread? And what does global limit mean? Why do I need to store photos on an outside site? These are my real questions. Sorry. I'm sure the answer is very simple.
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 and couple of Mongols over here... By the way Senpay, in a half a year or so be prepared to heard a nasty things in here about Baruto, what he is not. But may be you will be spared of that him being a nordic and such. Anyways love him, next basho we should see him more often. Oh no no..Baruto won't be spared just because he comes from the right location of the world! He will be targeted viciously the moment he steps on some traditional sumo culture thing or does the Kotooshu cry-baby act to the press after a lost bout. Moreover, if he ever dares to talk Musashimaru-Japanese or exchange devious smiles with Asashoryu, he will be attacked verbally. Oh come on Bubba-san. You almost sound like someone with inferiority complex.

They are direct links to the actual sites. The personal attachment size limit was increased couple of times already. I am not sure it would do much harm to increase it further either since not so many use that much anyway. In any case, it would be much more convenient if you would use other places to store the pics and then just insert a direct link to them into the thread.
Guest ken Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 As I am totally new to sumo I have a question to all of you who are little bit more into sumo. As today Baruto will have to compete with Takanowaka can you tell me if the 15-0 will come in your opinion? As I have read thet 15-0 in Juryo is rare (it would be 4th since 19XX) would it gain any much of attention in Japan?

As for the streets of Japan, others may interact. Edited March 25, 2006 by Kintamayama
Guest ken Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 As online news come and go and 90% of readers are enthusiasts and fans it would be much more impressive to see same news printed in sports magazines. Are there any good magazines to publish sumo news? Is Juryo in attention of sumo enthusiasts at all? The deeds of Baruto have gained extremely much attention in Estonia as he is at themoment most popular sportsman in the country and all his competitions have been major sports topic of discussion in past days and there has been rise in interest to sports. Here is to see how one great man can advertise one area of sports and have an effect on whole nation. He is already been celebrated here as national hero. And has good chances on becoming a sportsman of the year (he definitely is a soprtsman of the hearts already).

Baruto's success has also brought a quite substantial influx of Estonian guests (and members too) onto this forum. In March only giants US, Japan and Germany had more visitors here than Estonia. In relation to population, Estonia is the most active country with a huge margin. Nothing much about Baruto in Finnish media so far but it could well be that at some point his success will be noted in some sumo article (not exactly frequent in Finnish media but at times there are some small articles). Juryo is rarely depicted on online magazines which report about sumo. Only when there are some spesific events like this 14-0 now. Probably when Kageyama (and Sawai) debut in juryo, there will be some articles about them as there was when Kisenosato came there as a 17 year old or when Kotooshu made his debut.

I 'm thinking whether I heard something in that direction before. I'm not so sure.
Guest ken Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Yes, you are right. The languages are extremely close to each other. Estonian dialect spoken in southerne Estonia has very many words have exactry the same meanin as they have in Finnish. But it seems that Estonians understand more Finnish as Finnish understand Estonian. Also have recent researches given that Estonian is very close to Japanese language (although it is not easy to believe- I have not discovered any similarities).
Coo-cook Posted March 25, 2006 Posted March 25, 2006 Thanks, Ken. That's basically what I heard before, me thinking.
Kotoseiya Yuichi Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 Few corrections throughout the thread. No known Viking helmets ever featured horns. A myth. As an Estonian Baruto is not Nordic, but Baltic. Nordic in the most used context refers to Nordic countries (Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark & Finland). Estonia has no connection per se to Vikings, nor has Finland. Estonian is incomprehensible for a Finn save for single words here and there. I assume it's the same vice versa. The languages are linguistically close but vastly more different than, say, two dialects of the same language. Why would southern Estonian dialect be more similar to Finnish? If there are differences in Estonian dialects in this respect, the northerns should be closer to Finnish simply due to geographical closeness, I'd say. Older (say, people of my age, 30+) Estonians know Finnish because of the availability of Finnish media (TV especially) during the Soviet era. Very few (shamefully few) Finns know Estonian to any degree. I know of no one. Finns on average don't know languages, not even their own. It's sickening. If Estonian were close to Japanese, Finnish would also be. Well, it isn't. These theories are bullshit. (Sign of disapproval) Finally I will publicly declare my admiration to a Mongolian. Kyokutenho, the Olivier Panis of ozumo. Silent, introvert man doing his best every night. Keeping his feelings at bay (imperative #1 for a rikishi in my mind), not resorting to cheap tricks, not commenting the actions of his aite. Doing his own thing, letting the laymen argue about this and that... For the first time ever I'm a fan of a rikishi. (Nodding yes...)
sildan Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 Also have recent researches given that Estonian is very close to Japanese language. If Estonian were close to Japanese, Finnish would also be. Well, it isn't. These theories are bullshit. AFAIK, Finnish and Estonian are in the Finno-Ugric (sp?) family of languages, and Japanese has no known relationship to any other language. However, since Finno-Ugric languages aren't related to Indo-European languages (Hindi to Irish and most things in between), Estonian may be closer to Japanese than those languages. Wouldn't know, it's my sister who's the linguist, not me. Anyway, since we're (Nodding yes...) , I will now say this: w00t for Baruto if he makes 15-0!
Kotoseiya Yuichi Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 Finno-Ugric (sp?) Correct. Estonian may be closer to Japanese than those languages. Well, it may but I'll turn myself into an Asashoryu fan club president if Estonian & Japanese are very close to each other as Ken said had been discovered.
Hashira Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 (Applauding...) (Applauding...) (Applauding...) (Arguing...) He did it Congratulations, Baruto. Can't wait to be able to see you on the stream everyday
yamaneko Posted March 26, 2006 Author Posted March 26, 2006 Incredible. Dont know how he lost one in makushita but i did hear that he had slipped or something. What rank do you think he will debut at next basho? Do you think 10-5 is reasonable inasmuch as he will be going agasint a lot of the bottom feeder maegashira guys like hokutoriki, etc.? Then again, he might get a lot of the top maegashira guys who are all getting demoted such as roho, kokkai, etc. etc.
Senpai Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 There was a compilation of all Baruto's matches today on NHK. Hopefully some people recorded it and we shall see it! Anyway big thanks to those who are making possible that those who don't see stream or NHK will be able to watch those great bouts. (Applauding...)
Kishinoyama Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 There was a compilation of all Baruto's matches today on NHK. Hopefully some people recorded it and we shall see it!Anyway big thanks to those who are making possible that those who don't see stream or NHK will be able to watch those great bouts. ;-) Senpai and myself (along with others on the forum and sml) have been following Baruto since he entered Sumo. From the comments I have seen, Baruto is friendly and a nice guy. From the few matches I have seen, he has good technique. I just hope him being a nice guy won't hurt his performance on the dohyo :-D . I would like to see a compilation of his matches from this tournament if someone was kind enough to record it and post it. :-O

Murakami Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 I just hope the building media attention doesn't induce changes in his character and sumo.
Kishinoyama Posted March 27, 2006 Posted March 27, 2006 I just hope the building media attention doesn't induce changes in his character and sumo. I think he has a pretty level head on his shoulders. Well, I hope he does anyway.... :-(
