Jonosuke Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Another graduate from one of the amateur sumo powerhouses, Saitama Sakae High School, is joining Ozumo. Marving Lee Sano Junior, 18, has signed with Oitekaze Beya and will take part in the new recruit physical for Hatsu Basho along with six other hopefuls. Marvin Jr. helped to bring the Group Yusho Cup to the Saitama Sakae at the National High School Tournament Sumo Championship in the last two years. Even though his father is an American, his mother holds a Japanese citizenship so he was able to sidestep Ozumo's foreigner content rule.
yamaneko Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Cool. How long has he lived in Japan? He is the only one with american blood now in the ranks? What kind of american is he? Im assuming hawaaiin perhaps with that last name? Or is that his moms last name.
Kintamayama Posted December 22, 2005 Posted December 22, 2005 Together with Marvin and the new Georgian, there will be 7 new guys altogether.

The choice being - 'give up one or the other' Still, he'll be in the door then so they'll blind eye that I imagine though legally it could be the first case of an active rikishi changing 'away' from Japanese if he chose the US passport.
madorosumaru Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Marvin Lee Sano's father's name is Marvin Dangerfield, a former US Marine. The kid was born and raised in Tokyo according to Sports Nippon. He developed an interest in sumo through the influences of his maternal grandfather. Marvin Dangerfield, a Detroit native, works as a DJ in Japan.
yamaneko Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 So it looks like marvin Jr. is half black. Have there been other black members in osumo? What was Sentoryu? ANy pictures of mavin jr? Stats as far as his size/weight?
Jonosuke Posted December 28, 2005 Author Posted December 28, 2005 ANy pictures of mavin jr? Stats as far as his size/weight? Try this site. It says he is 173 cm tall and weighs 150 kg.
Jejima Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 What was Sentoryu? Sentoryu is a great athlete from St Louis, (USA). His mother is Japanese and his father is 'African-American'. When active, he had a very muscular body, and one of the most ferocious tachi-ais that I've ever seen. Sadly (for him), a lot of his opponents used to side-step (henka) him, for which he never seemed to find a good answer.

yamaneko Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 Yeah, kind of on the short side. But if he can get up to 400lbs, and keep his agility/balance, he will be one tough customer.
Asashosakari Posted December 28, 2005 Posted December 28, 2005 Yeah, kind of on the short side. But if he can get up to 400lbs, and keep his agility/balance, he will be one tough customer. Given that he's only 5'8", I dare say that "getting up to 400 lbs" and "keeping his agility" is pretty much a contradiction in terms.

Yeah I have to agree with Asashosakari being that big and keeping agility would be really hard to do. I am 5'7" and weigh like 230 I don't think there is anyway I could just add a hundred pounds, and still be able to move the same.
yamaneko Posted December 30, 2005 Posted December 30, 2005 Yeah, but it seems like his mass is also a lot of muscle. Because for 330 pounds right now, he doesnt look like i would imagine someone at that height to look at. If he added muscle and weight of 70 pounds over a couple of years, i wouldnt put it past him to keep his agility.
Kintamayama Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Together with Marvin and the new Georgian, there will be 7 new guys altogether. I guess the new Georgian will be joining in March, since he isn't one of the 7 who passed all their tests officially and will be starting Maezumo on day 3.
Mark Buckton Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 was on the 7.35 to the Kokugikan today next to a new Georgian. Understood not a word of his bud's Japanese - was kitted out to fight though - could it be the same chap?

Understood not a word of his bud's Japanese - was kitted out to fight though - could it be the same chap? Probably was either Gagamaru or Kokkai's brother, both had bouts today pretty early on. I'd guess Gagamaru. The guy I'm referring to is the one recruited by Nakamura beya. Gaga is from Kise and is in Jonokuchi
yamaneko Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 We wont see marvin on the banzuke until next basho, right?
