Tomorrow is a big test for Kageyama; physically, mentally and senpaitechnically. He is up against Dewaotori (2-0 at Ms8) who was his senpai at high school and according to the article Amanogawa translated, oyakata say Dewaotori has been able to defeat Kageyama regularly at keiko because of "senpai affect maybe". This is now the first time they meet at honbasho and Kageyama's progress seems to have been good so it will be very interesting to see how he can handle Dewaotori. Judging by the bouts I have seen, Kageyama should have good chances to beat Dewaotori but it will be the biggest test so far to see how good he really is already.

Kageyama is an aggressive rikishi with a strong forward approach, but not really heavy yet. This may cause his troubles against strong and heavy rikishi, of which Dewaotori undoubtedly is a good example of.

Day 1

Kageyama vs Rikiryu

Kageyama immediately gets moro-zashi and inside position, whereupon he marches his opponent straight out. Wonderful sumo per kaisetsusha. "I want to be a sekitori as quickly as possible" was the kid's comment.

Day 2

Sawai vs Chiyotenzan

Sawai matta on first try. Sawai does not get much of a step inside at tachiai. He manages to grab the left uwate first but Chiyo moves from hanmi into a comfortable yotsu position. He then pulls Sawai up to his chest for a yori attack. Sawai attempts an ucchari at dohyo edge but to no avail. Yoritaoshi is the final kimarite.

Day 3

Sawai vs Kakuryu

Both riskishi have good tachiai with Sawai attempting a get morozashi. Kakuryu pushes him up and circles around. Sawai gets his hands on left shitate and right uwate but Kaku manages to shake them loose. Kaku again pushes up and when Sawai attempts to move back forward with his head down, he is victimized by hatakikomi.

Kageyama is at Ms7 now and was featured by Nikkan sports in a small article. Today Kageyama had intense keiko with Tochinonada and Kasuganishiki and Tamanoshima amongst others. Keiko intensity was high and he was polishing his migi-yotsu style. "As he is at Ms7, he should be aiming for yusho. Now is the time to acquired power by going for forward going sumo" said his oyakata ex-Tochinowaka. "Being in a position to aim for sekitoridom, I am more spirited than ever. I was able to do good keiko borrowing sekitori chests today" Kageyama said with youthful ambition.

You know, i was looking at the birthdays of the Japanese rikishi in juryo, and top makushita...it really seems like these guys are almost the only hope for future Japanese superstars. Other than kisenosato, there arent hardly any young up and coming Japanese guys from makushita on up. So these two and Shibuya maybe, might be the only shots at a Japanese Yokozuna in the next few years. (other than tochiazuma of course)

Kageyama has finished Haru basho at Ms7 with a promising 5-2 record which will take him very close to juryo. His sumo content was faithfully forward going and he may be breaking records of wins from the start of mae-zumo without any slap/pull/twist down wins. He career record is now 41-9.

In Haru basho he beat high makushita regulars like Daishoma, Yoshiazuma, Raiko and Kinkaiyama before taking on the biggest challenge Dewaotori against whom he had long had problems at keiko and also lost one-sidedly in Hatsu basho. He also lost to Raiko in Hatsu basho but beat him this time around.

His two losses came against Michinoku-duo who are both really blooming now. He let Hakuba get morozashi and got carried out with tsuridashi. In his winning bouts he was on the offensive often getting an inside attack going much the same way as against Wakanoho in Kyushu basho.

He will now surpass Sawai in the banzuke for the first time since their debut in Hatsu 2005.

I hope it will give an extra boost to Sawai and they both get to juryo after next basho. This and previous basho have shown an important difference between them. Kageyama looks more confident and his mind is invelnerable for stress. I hope he will not fail. (Sigh...)

Sawai will only make it if he gets the yusho. I think not.

I do know that he needs a Yusho and I just keep my fingers crossed for it. He started in January if he gets to juryo in July or even September it is still significiant result.

And if he loses tomorrow, even a yusho might not be enough.

Fortunately he won.

Kageyama in Haru 2006:

Kageyama yorikiri Raiko

Fast tachi-ai, morozashi attack and easy win.

Kageyama yorikiri Kinkaiyama

Kirinowaka shitatenage Kageyama

Bad tachi-ai based loss.

Kageyama oshidashi Daishoma

Solid tachi-ai, compact inside attack, morozashi action and pushout from the inside.

Kageyama sukuinage Yoshiazuma

Morozashi attack without grip on the mawashi, at the tawara changed the direction and yanked Yoshiazuma down with sukuinage.

Hakuba tsuridashi Kageyama

Morozashi to Hakuba immediately while Kageyama was all upright. Hakuba hoisted him up and carried out.

Kageyama oshidashi Dewaotori

Excellent win against a keiko nemesis and a rikishi with substantial yotsu-prowess.

Sawai had a 3-4 record. There is a report of lower back problems for two basho now and while Sawai himself denied it had significance to his Hatsu make-koshi, it certainly may be a factor slowing him down now. His major weakness is the tachi-ai where he loses all bouts totally. On day 1 he lost the tachi-ai against Kanbayashi and let Kanbayashi attack with his excellent reaching tsuki. Yet Sawai hung on very well at the tawara and even got a right hand outside grip but was off balance enough for Kanbayashi to continue the movement resulting in katasukashi. He reportedly lost 100-0 at the tachi-ai both against Ryuo and Masatsukasa. He also lost to Isobe by oshitaoshi.

Even in his winning bouts against Koryu and Wakakirin he lost the tachi-ai and especially against Koryu was in grave danger and only managed to twist him down at the last moment. Against hapless Wakakirin he got a grip on the mawashi well before the edge and then easily hoisted him up and out. Takanotsuru was of no test.

Basically his basho was very mediocre. Win against Koryu was awkward and Wakakirin and Takanotsuru were not genki at all. He lost all 4 bouts decisively. Bad basho. He is very strong once in yotsu but he can't be this bad at the tachi-ai nor against fast pushing attacks.

Update Nagoya 2006 home strech: Kageyama

Kageyama's future looks brighter and brighter. He is maturing physically,

and his speed, balance and power all appear to be on an upward trend. In

Natsu bahso he had a slightly different approach compared to his largely

morozashi-aiming style during the Haru basho. Kageyama had his revenge

against Hakuba blocking his morozashi easily, using ottsuke efficiently,

and exhibiting a stable lower body while not giving any ground to his

opponent. He was able to go with his strong forward charge, as always, but

also utilized powerful ottsuke and generally looked to be more refined and

versatile. With better banzuke luck he would have made his debut in juryo

in Nagoya, but it was not to be.

In Nagoya basho he went undefeated up until his 6th bout when he met

on-fire Shiraishi. His victims were Shimoda, Senshuyama, Koryu, Asahimaru

and Kitataiki. Still going forward and made the possible "record" of never

winning by going backwards before promotion to juryo. He has now 50-13

record before his last ever ( I dare to say, barring injuries)

non-sekitori sumobout. Kimarite stats:

15 yorikiri

14 oshidashi

7 yoritaoshi

5 oshitaoshi

3 okuridashi

3 sukuinage

2 tsukiotoshi (both attacking ones, no backward movement, slamming moves)

1 tsukidashi

He has one bout left in makushita and it is evidently against Sumanofuji

on senshuraku. After that bout kaiten-zushi becomes even cheaper for him

in relation to income level. Such is life at kaiten-zushi heaven.

He has all it takes to become a great rikishi. Work ethics is said to be

extremely good, forward going attitude is embedded in him, skill from both

oshi and yotsu are at good level, morozashi, ottsuke, tsukiotoshi,

migi-yotsu all go well. Physical characteristics are close to optimal.

Good reach and athletic body. No serious injuries, excellen heya

atmosphere with a mix of young upcoming rivals and senior citizens. We

shall see what happens with Taffel and Kageyama.

He has never done henka. He may have dreamed of that once, kitto akumu datta.

In both cases, how do you know this? Have you seen all of his bouts? How?

I have seen 22 of his winning bouts, read reports of 15 more so 14 bouts are unaccounted for. Based on those 37 bouts he never goes backwards. Furthermore, his oyakata and other oyakata have said Kageyama always goes forward also during the early phase of his career in ozumo where most of the bouts I haven't seen/heard from him are. Lastly his kimarite distribution suggests to that direction too. Two okuridashi I don't know about but otherwise quite unique. I am not 100% sure of course but at least in makushita or during his 7-0 sandanme yusho he has never done henka.

Oh and his last makushita stint bout is actually against juryo rikishi since he faces Dairaido on senshuraku. The roid bull can be prone to slapdown so who knows...

Thanks. I had been wondering whether you somehow had access to videos or something. I guess you are trawling through Japanese language sources for your reports.

Kageyama was promoted to juryo.

So, his name is changed to tochiozan(栃煌山).

Welcome to forum! Are you possibly a fan of Kageyama? Do you have more information about him?

Hidden translation report by Kintamayama the Bold, Bald, Vanished and Jewish:

The 19 year old Kageyama/Tochiouzan went to the same high school as Asashouryuu, and is already nicknamed "The Japanese Asashouryuu". He does only strong, forward moving Sumo and doesn't use any pulls, a fact which has already caught Kitanoumi Rijichou's eye. "His advantage is that he has his own migi yotsu style", he said. He already signed some autographs with his new shikona, and added "I'll become Yokozuna!!" , as can be seen in the picture below. He also has some interaction with the Yokozuna. Apparently in Nagoya after his matches he asked for advice, win or lose. "Hey! Climb the ranks quickly!!", is what Asashouryuu reportedly said to him. "I hope he will lend me his chest in keiko", hoped the youngster. As for his new shikona, it was given to him by his Oyakata Kasugano. "The 'zan' is a play on the 'yama (mountain)' in his real name. I want him to shine ('ou') higher than a mountain!!", he explained.

Any news about Sawai ? I think he is overshadow by Tochiozan as for now but I don't believe such promising rikishi just vanished. Maybe his last records aren't so impressive but two "weak" (3-4) basho and than two 4-3 aren't end of the world. (Applauding...)

Thank you. I like all Kasugano rikishis.

more info....I translated this news .English is difficult....

Tochiouzan, who born in Aki city, Kochi prefecture, visited Kochi newspaper company and reported his promotion.

When he was asked about quick promotion, he said "It goes more smoothly than I thought." and smiled.

But only one and a half year have passed since he has joined Kasugano-beya, his hair is too short to make an oicho-mage for Autumn basho.

When asked "Do you have a confidencs in winning at juryo?", "I'll do my best.", he answered modestly and "Juryo rikishis are big and good in technique. I want to overwhelm opponent with energetic tachiai.", talked aspiration strongly.

Well Sawai has had 3-4 in Natsu basho and now 4-3 in Nagoya basho. He beat good quality foes this time upending Wakanoho, Bushuyama, Takakoyama and Daishoma. The problem still is that he lost to Yakigaya (pusher) with oshitaoshi. A component of significance in his stagnation must be the reported lower back problems. Otherwise his stagnation is really difficult to comprehend. Such a brilliant rikishi he was before the problems. An interesting fact is that as recently as in October 2005 Sawai beat Hochiyama in almost all training bouts and now Hochiyama has strolled through juryo with an impressive 13-2 yusho and promotion to makuuchi. Would be interesting to hear how their keiko is nowadays. In any case Sawai is still very young and has that massive talent. Hopefully his stagnation is due to an injury as in that case there is some clear reason for this. Otherwise very baffling indeed. Still, Sawai only needs one strong basho to be on the verge of juryo promotion and maybe that is what he needs now, much the same way as his stablemate Hochiyama who showed he has no problems with juryo competition and belongs to makuuchi despite that long standing upper makushita stint. Fascinating heya situation though since Hochiyama now enters makuuchi and both Sawai and Kadomoto are big prospects at career high ranks or close by. Keiko incentives should be sky high continuosly.

Have now seen 4 of Kageyama's bouts in Nagoya basho. After beating Shimoda on shonichi, Kageyama faced Senshuyama and immediately dug into morozashi and easily dispatched Senshuyama out. Against Asahimaru he worked his way through the layers of flesh and again muscled his way to morozashi crushing Asahimaru in a couple of seconds with yoritaoshi. Against Kitataiki he again went forward without worries and easily ignored any counter move by Kitataiki and eloquantly escorted him out. On senshuraku he had his first ever juryo bout, withheld Dairaido's attack, stood firm, seeked for an opening and keeping a steady balance pushed Dairaido to the edge and twisted him down.

Reports from Koryu bout indicate he vanguished Koryu with ease too. Only loss came against Shiraishi.

NHK commentators (forgot which oyakata) said on two occasions he has more than enough ability to get kachi koshi in Aki in juryo. Chiraka juubun was mentioned many times too. We shall see.

He is getting better and better. Stronger physique too and technically extremely sound. Too bad I couldn't see the losing bout though.

Saw couple of Sawai-bouts. In a bout against Tamaasuka he gave up right uwate to Tama and had no decent grip. Yet, quite a persistent hovering at the edge which is promising considering the lower back problem stuff earlier on. When he got his sumo going he won with fast sumo as usual. Such was the case against Daishoma where he secured kachi koshi.
