Andreas Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Ive got 2 rather japanese hobbies, namely watching sumo and playing go. Are there any other go players among the japanophiliacs in this forum? I know Futeno plays go (from the translation of his blog, i wonder how strong he is at go, "I ve beaten Futeno" T-Shirts could be a marketing gag), but he certainly doesnt use this forum. If You dont know what go is: its one of the oldest boardgames in the world, a pure strategy game at about the level of chess (it can be played online, i dont recomment yahoo though) which is popular in Japan, China and Korea. Go has a ranking system like martial arts with dan and kyu grades, but without the belts.
Doyobi Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Ah, Go :), a very nice game indeed, actualy more complex than chess. I used to play a lot during my student days, now I must have forgotten how to play :( Sumoforum play-per-email Go tournament anyone?

Just dont try to sell Asashoryu one of those Tshirts (Shaking head...) It would be hard to play Go with both your arms broken. (Whistling...)
Doyobi Posted October 18, 2005 Posted October 18, 2005 the same thing repeated in small areas over a large board. That's oversimplifying a little bit. The way you play the game changes from a 9x9 board to a 19x19 board. And one could bring a good argument about the wide variety of pieces ... there is a very wide variety of groups in Go. Those pieces never live alone, they have to form groups. Those two games are in so many ways different, that we could argue for years trying to compare them. I'm in no way trying to minimize the merit of Chess. My dad taught me Chess when I was three, and Chess played a crucial role in my development. (I am not worthy...) If I ever decided to have kids, I would teach them the golden three: Chess, Go and Bridge!
Fujisan Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 (edited) actualy more complex than chess. personally i am a huge chess lover. just reached 1500 reanking on yaho for the first time. only ok i know in absolute terms but i do beat most people i know. found out adachinoryu is a player last weekend. quite handy one two but after losing the first five games to him i learned and adapted to his style and its now 5-4 and he is sweating. Yes I'm a chess man aswell but the highest rating I have reached on yahoo is 1240 but after taking a serious dip in form last night(Stupid mistake after stupid mistake cost me 5 games in a row) I dropped to 1970. I'm on 32 wins,30 losses and 4 draws. We will have to play sometime. Do you play under your Shikona? I do if you wanna watch out for me,or maybe we can arrange a game. Zenjimoto Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 I used to play Go, even back in the early days of the Internet Go Server (text-based then!) ;-) These days I probably get my butt kicked... (I am not worthy...) Cheers Zenjimoto
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 on yahoo you will find me as "sumofanmagazine"sure lets play sometime This may be a prematurely made question but today was the first day I actually used Yahoo deliberately. Signed up and all and went to games. Now I used to play chess and some other games at Pogo and there one could search for other players by names and then add to "friends" list so that one could always see if they are playing some game and in which room. After 10 minutes I still haven't found a way to do that at Yahoo games site. So if you say "you will find me as "sumofanmagazine"", how would I do that in practise on the site?
Fujisan Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 All I know is I have been playing everyday for the last 2 weeks and I have never seen the same name more than once. The 2 exceptions to that are 'Abbiecutie and Courtneycutie 'who always seem to be there but never actually play any games. (Gyoji...) :-P ;-)
Fujisan Posted October 22, 2005 Posted October 22, 2005 gonna do that with fujisan now Finished 2-1 to Nishinoshima but I think he went easy on me in the last game. (Shaking head...) Good games Nishi.
Mark Buckton Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 gonna do that with fujisan now Finished 2-1 to Nishinoshima but I think he went easy on me in the last game. :-) Good games Nishi. gah! he'll be pissed - 5-4'd him at chess in Osaka. Came back with his 4 after going 5 down so definitely a fighter. Strange though - sitting on the terraces of Osakan cafes playing chess in the pissing down rain. Kept murmering about a parallel universe / Hitchcock something or other. (Shaking head...) Shogi anyone?
Mark Buckton Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 - 5-4'd him at chess in Osaka.....Kept murmering about a parallel universe with the way i threw away that 5th game and some of the things that happened is it any wonder. balance and order was restored to the universe at the end though and you know that i have figured out your "chess henka" tactics. like the borg i evolve quickly. (Shaking head...) :-) (Yusho winner...) ;-) (Laughing...) chess henka - synonym for tactics non? Give somebody a pice and punish him for taking it. (moi) VS scorched earth policy of take as much as possible and see what is left at the end (tu) (Showing respect...) Until the next time - Vie de France!
Fujisan Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Thanks again Nishinoshima,I enjoyed our games. Unfortunately Adachi my tactics are more 'make horrendous moves and see what pieces I have left at the end of it.' One game comes to mind I played a few days ago where I was so wrapped up in what was happening on one side of the board I failed to notice my opponents Bishop attacking my Queen-Despite the fact it was on the square right next to it.:-) My opponent must have thought christmas came early ,then I added insult to my own injury by sending the message-"Where did that come from.". (Shaking head...) Some days your brain just doesn't seem to be in the same dimension as your body (Showing respect...)
sumofan Posted October 24, 2005 Posted October 24, 2005 Some days your brain just doesn't seem to be in the same dimension as your body :-S totally off topic, but i know what you mean. it happens very rarely, but on those days, everything i do seems to be wrong afterwards. i have learned not to touch complex components when i am programming on such days. i spend that day testing, reading code, and making notes of all the issues i think exist, and what i think needs to be done about them. then, next day i actually follow up on those comments. doing any real work on a day like that always causes more problems than you started with. the last such day was when my daughter was born, 6 months ago. i was working at home, waiting for my wife to signal the moment she thought we should go to the hospital. somehow i could not concentrate. ...
