Yup, sure looked like Asa decided to comfound Shoes-on today, as he shifted very henka-like (um..eloquantly shifted to the right, as is always explained when a 'sumoudou' guy does it..) at the outset. Shoes-on was so bewildered he went home.

Very deliberate Henka... I'm sure Asashoryu must be very happy with himself. I'm sure the Yokozuna achieved exactly what he wanted - the easy win against Kyokushuzan, first of all, and, especially, sending a message to Kotooshu. I personally think Kotooshu's sumo has been quite smart and impressive this basho, despite the discussions on the forum, but I do think the Yokozuna wanted to show how easy it is to mangage a win by simply shifting away - and doing so against Kyokushuzan... well, I can't say it didn't make me laugh.

what was the making faces about from the yokozuna before the bout?????

i was in about the 6th row and it looked like he was making them at someone in the crowd  (First prize...)

Hmmmm You was in the 6th row+Asashoryu was making faces at someone in the crowd.

Sounds like paranoia to me (Going kyujo...)

Does anyone have the impression, like I do, that Asashoryu is taking the mickey out of some of his opponents by imitating their technique?

In his bout with Kokkai, he appeared to be copying the way Kokkai does his tsuppari, using his whole forearm up to the elbow, with his arms slightly more horizontal than usual and leaving a short pause between thrusts.

And doing a henka in his bout against Kyokushuzan, surely the most regular ducker and weaver in Makuuchi?

a dose of Shuzan's own, far too often used, medicine.  Bitter tasting I hope.

From the dressing room:

Kyokushuzan: "He did [to me] what I should have done." (Bitter smile)

Asashoryu: (In a jolly mood) "That Futeno--I heard the number of hits on his blog went from 5000 to 40,000 after he beat me. That's a big enough number to fill the Tokyo Dome. Maybe, I should also write one."
