Mattjila Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 In fact, "anko" derives from the "ankou" (angler fish/frog fish), a grotesque looking fish that has a roundish soft body. It lives at the bottom of the sea and doesn't like to move around too much. It would just open it wide its mouth and gobble up whatever edible material that swims or floats toward it. Ankou can eat up to 70% of its own body weight and can grow to about one meter in size. A rather apt analogy for the round-bellied, slow-moving, omnivorous osumo-san. OK, this is off-topic, but I have to ask. What exactly is ankou? I've seen it described as both anglerfish and as monkfish. Now, yes, all monkfish are anglerfish, but not all anglerfish are monkfish. Anglerfish is usually used to describe an entire order while monkfish are a genus in that order (and a species of shark as well...).

Able to slice bamboo shoots with a single stroke. Yes, it's Superrikishi. Disguised as David-san, mild-mannered itamai of a popular metropolitan restaurant . . . BTW, there is a super-tall new deshi at Tamanoi--a 15 year-old who already measures at 195 cm. More on him later.

Iwakiyama-zeki, Hochiyama-zeki and the makushita rikishi from Sakaigawa Beya came for de-geiko today. We all had a great workout! After keiko today, each rikishi of the heya had a head-shot taken. The folks from All Best Promotion, which produces programs such as the one about Tamanoi Beya on Cable TV-Adachi, brought a load of equipment for the photo session. Thank you very much! Now, we finally have the pictures for the rikishi introduction page! As I find time, I would like to update the Tamanoi Beya site also. You can look forward to that! We will be very busy tomorrow for various reasons so there will be no update of the blog. NOTICE! We participated in the Fire Walk Festival at the Hoshoji temple in Hachioji yesterday. In the past, they used to actually walk over the embers of the fire, but too many people suffered burns, so starting last year, the participants walk around the fire instead. As matter of fact, it is pretty darn hot just to walk around the flames. We were there to pray so we could get kachikoshi without any injuries in Natsu Basho. How are you folks spending your days off during Golden Week? For us rikishi, it is keiko, keiko, keiko each and every day with the basho coming up. Only one more week until Shonichi! The keiko is grueling but we shall gambarize! Tamanoi Beya

By the way, the can of beer (I am not worthy...) that I have in my hand in the photo is one liter! Hard to tell, huh? A liter of beer in a can...nice...At first I thought the beer was a tall boy...I was wrong...by about 10 ounces.

I've encountered 1l cans of beer many times, and my memory has them all substantially larger than that, especially wider in diameter. (or maybe sumo-san Tooyama is such a big boy, one liter looks like mist in the sun...)
