Aki Basho Day 13.

As it was a holiday today,

the Kokugikan was full of spectators!

Tochiazuma-zeki won his 9th bout.

There are now 2 days remaining.

We will do our best till the very end so please cheer for us.

As for myself, I lost to Wakanoho today and finished with

a record of 6 wins and 1 loss for this basho.

Today was the senshuraku of the 15-day Aki Basho.

Thank you for all your support.

It was a disppointment for Tochiazuma-zeki today, but everyone at the heya

will do his very best in preparation for the next basho so please continue to cheer for us.

A lot of you attended the Senshuraku Basho Closing Party tonight.

Thank you very much.

This basho saw my return to the dohyo from injury.

Through this blog, which I started during my hospital stay,

you have sent countless encouragements and cheers.

I am so appreciative of your support.

I will gambarize so that I will do well again next basho.

Please continue to lend me your support.

Gacktoh-san, a SF member currently living in Malaysia, was instrumental in getting this thread started. She has been an avid reader of the Tamanoi Blog from near the beginning and wanted to share with other SF members all the enjoyment she got from the exploits of the Tamanoi rikish as told by Tooyama-san. Thus, in another thread, she asked for someone--anyone--to translate the blog and one thing then led to another.

During the quiet time between basho, I will periodically translate some of Gacktoh-san's favorite episodes which prompted her to be in such a sharing frame of mind . . .

Tochiazuma is more a fan of Senichi Hoshino, former manager and current club executive of the Hanshin Tigers. Hoshino, who is a family friend, led the Tigers in 2003 to their first Central League championship in 18 years, thereby causing a major commotion in the Osaka area.

Tochiazuma became a Hanshin fan when Hoshino took over as the manager of the Tigers.

A Bowl of Kake Soba?? (Noodles in Broth)

Good Morning! This is Tooyama!

This incident happened yesterday. When they delivered the dinner and I opened the lids,

there were miso soup, stewed veggies, and some broiled salted salmon.

Normally, I eat everything without complaint but

I was really hungry last night.

Listed among the retired rikishi after Aki Basho was the name of Tamanoi Beya's Jonidan Azumayama. Few people probably noticed this entry. Some were looking to see if Kotonowaka had decided to retire and take over Sadogatake Beya. Others noticed the inclusion of Daishochi, a Mongolian rikishi that was a promising prospect until very recently. Even a shin-deshi who never appeared on the dohyo received a second glance from the curious for pulling a FTC - "Flew the Coop."

Azumayama ended his sumo life at age 31 in obscurity just as he had spent almost all of his 16-year career. Other rikishi born in 1974, such as Kyokutenho and Toki, became well-known sekitori. Azumayama hung around in jonidan and sandanme. However, we all have to remember that it is guys like Azumayama that make ozumo a viable entity. Hundreds of toriteki are toiling daily--cleaning the heya, cooking chanko, serving as tsukebito--all thanksless jobs for no pay. They dream of riches and glory but most end up with neither.

A dampatsu-shiki was held for Azumayama at the Senshuraku Party. I hope the many that gathered for the occasion gave him a warm send-off.

Also, whilst the pics above are, I believe actually from Junior High School number 9 in Adachi-ku (Shibuya's old JHS), if it is from Sonoda Byoin - may be a thank you as that is the place Azuma visited with his shoulder probs a while back. Not held at Sonoda though - no space and no grounds there.

Thanks for the details. You are familiar with the area. The undokai was held by Sonoda Hospital. Tooyama did not say where precisely the site was, but, you're right, most hospitals would not have the space so they must have used some school's grounds.

mistake on the school - sorry - all look the same these JHS's.

Fuchie is the site of Moto Fuchie park - Adachi-ku illuminations each winter.

Also - near Moto Fuchie 2 years ago a police man cycled past a man sat in a white T-shirt and black pants / jeans. Was chilling on a park bench as you do.

Anyway, policeman thought said pants were a tad tight so went closer to investigate and found the 'black pants' were painted on!! He was arrested.

Hmmmmm.

LAS VEGAS!

Sorry it took so long for an update.

A contingent from Ozumo left for Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, on October 4, for the Las Vegas Jungyo.

This time, Isoazuma went as the tsukebito for Tochiazuma-zeki.

Gee, I wish I could go to Las Vegas . . .

I wanna to try my luck at the casino . . .

So, that's what I did!

I went to Las Vegas!!

Wow, the neon lights of Las Vegas are magnificent!

I'm going over to check out the casino . . .

Alas! I suppose "Pachinko Las Vegas" in Adachi-ku doesn't really count . . .
