Guest Phishywake Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 I have never found myself disliking more wrestlers than this tournament. I have already discussed my disgust for Kitazakura and his "baka" type antics but Roho and his consistent disrespect to not only wrestlers of lower rank than himself, but also to those of higher rank. His lack of respect shown after the match to Kaio is ridiculous. Also his henka during the Kokkai match just adds to it. I know I might be on a hating rant of sorts here, but honestly, this is quite disgusting to me. I always find myself cheering on any foreign rikishi, especially Hakurozan, but Roho has been added to the I hope he loses every day list.
Otokonoyama Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 It does seem that rikishi are more openly showing their emotions these days. Kisenosato has a pouting/gonna cry face when he loses, Roho barely nods his head when he loses, Takamisakari & Kitazakura have their antics both pre & post match...
Guest Absax Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Can't hear it anymore. More and more guys are crying bout henka, roho, kokkai, takamisakari, asashoryu, kaio, chiyo, osh,... If all is so bad then you must do only one thing: don't watch sumo anymore i know more guys who like roho and his power than the other who dislike him. Same with asa and the other. Most of them have fun watching sumo. So please stop wining ..., stop watching!

Roho has become my least favourite rikishi with Kokkai following closely. And today Kotooshu made a terrible henka against Miyabiyama, so I kind of start to dislike all European rikishi...
genghis Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Roho's action looked more like a dumb thing. There is a big difference between the Asa's extra-shove which concludes his total dominance in a winning bout and Roho's arrogant refusal to admit his defeat. Kaio did his majestic nage for good.

But is that a good thing? If you don't like to read criticism then stop reading internet forums...
Araiwa Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 I couldn't agree more with Chiyozakura. Roho doesn't bow after loses, he doesn't really bow before a fight. He doesn't show respect to opponents that are obviously stronger as himself. I don't like him. Roho is in no way as powerful as Kaio and doesn't show good sumo very often. He resorts to pull-downs every time when he could move forward instead. Not to mention the cheapest win of the tournament against Kokkai. I just hope Hakurozan doesn't become like But I don't see Kitazakuras behavior as disrespectful. He always bows, even when he loses. When he is angry after such losses and slaps the ground with his fist, he only is angry about himself and not his opponents unlike Roho or Kakizoe. I really got to like Kitazakura, after I watched him a bit closer. IMO He has a higher fighting spirit than many makuuchi wrestlers and he wouldn't have stayed sekitori for so long without it.
Guest Absax Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 If you don't like to read criticism then stop reading internet forums... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Is there anything you like when watching sumo? I've only said there here are more and more 'fans' who tell whom or what they dislike. So it's a good question why this 'fans' are still watching sumo. Only waste of time .... or it's a hobby of them to show critic on all and nothing. If this is not a sumo fan forum but only a 'criticism'-forum, ok, then i'll not waste my time. Bye
genghis Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Hakurozan said in his interview that Roho and Kokkai go to the Orthodox Church together. Err..., what will they be talking about on the way to Church now. About nice henka? Roho is clearly the lowest person among rikishi.

Higashimori Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 Not to pile on, but I myself was boiling when I watched Roho on the digest just now....first his sloooooow walk back to his side after getting dumped by Kaio was already disrespectful, and then he topped it off with barely a head nod (as per usual, as noted above), and then he had the temerity to rip off his sagari before descending the dohyo (not in the same way the Asashoryu did against Shuzan way back when, mind you, but enough so to draw notice, even from Kaio). And all this because he was summarily flipped on his ass by a superior rikishi (and character, needless to say). What a shame that the great Taiho has spend so much time trying to cultivate this lout. I have to say, against my wishes, that I see similar tendencies from his brother. He too sometimes doesn't bow after losses and in general seems to assume a posture belying the fact he's a newcomer to the division (and not in a good way). And just to pile on even more, I think I can finally say I've over Kotoushuu, and no longer find myself rooting for him. Just something about his on-dohyo manner that rubs me the wrong way (to say nothign of his off-dohyo comments).....
Asashosakari Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 (edited) But I don't see Kitazakuras behavior as disrespectful. He always bows, even when he loses. I really got to like Kitazakura, after I watched him a bit closer. IMO He has a higher fighting spirit than many makuuchi wrestlers and he wouldn't have stayed sekitori for so long without it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> He's hardly the only one, too...both Yotsukasa and Wakanoyama have done the pound-the-dohyo thing in recent times, and I've seen others do it, albeit less often. Anyway, I agree...I know there's a school of thought that the showing of any emotion is disrespectful to your opponent (particularly when you just beat him, e.g. as Kita did here), but I disagree with that, since Kita's emotional outbreaks are clearly directed only at himself. Takamisakari's antics are more borderline since they happen before the bout and thus can influence the result, but I've never been bothered by them personally. He's not clowning around while crouching at the shikiri-sen or anything, after all. On the other hand, the recent trend for blatant refusal to show respect to the opponent after losses (Roho, Kakizoe, etc.) in the spots that are explicitly designed for it (i.e. the post-bout bowing, in particular) is quite a bit more disturbing to me. Edited July 16, 2005 by Asashosakari
Azumashida Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 In his bout against Hokutoriki, Roho also showed a lack of disrespect, but mostly to himself: he thought the bout was already over when he had his opponent at the edge, gave him time to turn and extend his iron-arms in the usual deadly Hokutoriki fashion... Respect for others starts with inner serenity. I think that Roho is letting his level of frustration over stupidly lost bouts pile up. The guy should gather himself, take one bout at a time, and not let frustration get to him. I do feel sympathy for him and think he can wisen up with time.

Fortunately, that has happened, but it's much easier to mellow when you are completely dominant and your career is a big bed of roses. It's unlikely to get that way with all these other guys and so I believe it will be harder for them to change. In the larger picture I do worry that these unchallenged displays of insolence will do more to harm sumo than all the other ills being talked about today. When sumo ceases to look like sumo, and nothing is done about it...now there's a problem!
Kintamayama Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 And today Kotooshu made a terrible henka against Miyabiyama, so I kind of start to dislike all European rikishi... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Osh and Miyabiyama have been exchanging henkas for three straight bashos now. This is a tradition.
_the_mind_ Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 ok so my question is this. certain rikishi are blatently now showing respect for the others, what can the Kyokai do about it? is there anything? its very hard to MAKE someone respect others.

Mark Buckton Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 very disappointing recently has Roho been. Kotooshu too I felt - manners wise as well as sumo wise - Roho. And, without intent on any generalisations - I found the juniors at the Kokugikan champs (those from geographical Eastern Europe) to be less than gentlemanly shall we say. Angry faces (Osh perfected this a few days back), frowns, cursory nods and starting talking to coaches while still descending the dohyo.(amateurs here I mean). Not to mention - about all most of the eastern euro blokes could do was go nodowa and slap violently like a street fight. A week later I actually said to an amateur I know who is considering entering the worlds to bear this in mind as it looks more like teenage brawls in mawashi as opposed to actual sumo when coming up against these blokes. Many Asian lads (at youth champs) meanwhile - picture of manners.
_the_mind_ Posted July 16, 2005 Posted July 16, 2005 ok but how do they make them go threw the actions? Roho knows the right way to do this stuff but isnt doing it. so if he pisses off the wrong people with it, how can they make him bow and do such things? has demotion ever been given out for such things? or suspention? im just wondering if Chiyonofuji walks up to Roho and says "you WILL bow at the end of your matches, or else" im wondering what the or else could be if someone was ever given such an altimatum (and potentially still refused).

You just have to stop reading the forum, although I really see no reason for that. A forum is a place where people share views, mostly in a civilized way, and sometimes not. So someone disagreed with you - big deal. That's no reason to withold your wisdom and views from members of this forum. And I am not a small child. I am a BIG child. Are you still here, BTW? I'm sure Taihou will be the one talking to him, not anyone else, but I have a feeling you will see a new Rohou soon. Unless, of course, he's behaving OK and all this is in the eyes of the paranoid Gaijin fans..
