Asashoryu began keiko today at the Takasago-beya temporary lodgings in Kanie-cho, Aichi. He had 16 matches with Asasekiryu, Senshuyama...

He said he's not too concerned about his condition, as he is moving well. He wants to get himself in proper condition by the start of the tournament in two weeks. He wants to focus on getting ready for this tournament, and isn't thinking about his winning streak.

He is handling the heat alright, and feels his main rival is himself. He needs to keep his concentration, and give it his all.

The yokozuna also mentioned he woke up at 2 a.m. Tuesday morning, and really felt he had arrived in Nagoya (already crazy from the heat!). He feels it's necessary to develop your condition to be able to withstand the heat and compete for the full 15 days.

He has noticed Kotomitsuki has a shot at Ozeki promotion, and thinks it's a good chance for some serious keiko together. He's extending his invitation to the sekiwake...

I remember the days when "Kotomitsuki" was a serious rival for him (more than that he used to really take it to Shoryu) My how times have changed though..............

The Chunichi Shimbun reported recently that Tochiazuma claims his condition is "warukunai", or not bad. He has been working out with rubber tubing to keep in shape, and plans to start serious keiko today (the 30th) by going for degeiko in the Dewa ichimon.

In other news, costruction was finished the 29th on Kokonoe beya's new Nagoya lodgings (at a cost of 80,000,000 yen). The oyakata has ordered Chiyotaikai to take the Emperor's Cup this basho (win the yusho). This new training area was built to that purpose.

It seems the yokozuna Asashoryu has invited Chiyotaikai to be his swordbearer for the dohyo-iri. It's been 99 years since that's happened (an ozeki in this role). Chiyotaikai is doing his best to persevere and make a comeback.

Well, I, for one, am happy to hear that. I really want Chiyotaikai to retain his ozeki-ship for some time to come. A few years ago, the yokozuna (who was not yokozuna yet) and the ozeki were trying to study English by speaking to one another in the language. I hope this move is indicative of the friendship still being there. Two really nice guys, despite the way they are painted in public.

A piece of rubber, in the shape of a tube or band. People generally attach it to a point on the wall, or stand on one end, and then pull against it, using the resistance that the rubber provides to build strength.

ok, thanks.

Actually, i suspected this, but i did not expect that rikishi would do this.

Found some interviews from Mongolian newspaper "Zuunii Medee". The newspaper said they took these interviews from Japanese sources. Anyway, here is the translations:

On the readiness for the basho:

Asashoryu:

I've managed to win the last basho eventhough my preparations were not enough. I prepared myself much better for the Nagoya, so am quite confident about Zensho Yusho.

Takasako Oyakata on Asashoryu:

No one can defeat the Yokozuna (anymore) this year. He is very confident on himself and hardly make any mistakes nowadays. A Yokozuna should be just like him. I think no one will argue with that this year is his year.

PS: Asa did some keiko with Tokitsuumi, Kokkai and Iwakiyama and suffered not a single loss.

Myagino Oyakata on Hakuho:

Hakuho is becoming stronger everyday that now only two rikishi can stand against him: Asashoryu and Kaio. The rest will simply be overwhelmed. He will make double digits in Nagoya.

PS: Hakuho apparently denied interview. He has mostly been working on his strength but stopped the power training 2 weeks prior to the basho. He overdid this in March and stopped it just a week before the tournament, so his body simply didn't recover from the stress, leading to a disastrious basho. This time, he is more carefull about his timing. Hakuho is apparently keeping a low profile to avoid unwanted pressure and secretly aiming for the yusho. There is also rumour going around that Kitanoumi apparently said that 13 wins would make him consider promoting Hakuho to Ozeki.

Tochiazuma:

My spirit is high. I would compete to win the basho. My primary opponent will be Asashoryu.

Takanohana Oyakata on Tochiazuma:

Tochiazuma's preparedness looks on edge, so I think he will win the yusho. In Nagoya, main competition will take place among Asashoryu, Hakuho and Tochiazuma. The rest will have no chance.

Ah, now Kitanoumi's statement that Kotomitsuki needs two times 12 wins for Ozeki promotion makes sense. He just confused the two guys in his statements. (Showing respect...)

Maybe this is only a rumor ? Hakuho was 8/7, 9/6 und now 13/2. That makes 30. Even a zensho yusho should not be enough. Furthermore, we have enough Ozeki and the popularity of sumo will benefit from a long struggle of Hakuho becoming Ozeki. Once he is Ozeki, people a loosing interest as long as he has no chance of becoming Yokuzuna (which will take a few more years)

I don't know where "Zuuny Medee" got all these "Japanese" sources.

Myagino oyakata has been very reserved about Hakuho sor far and wouldn't make such big statements. Is that really him?

It might be the new Miyagino Oyakata who made the statement, not the one who is Hakuho's mentor (that oyakata is now Kumagatani).
