Asashouryuu has injured his left shoulder. During his tachi-ai against Wakanosato-"It felt like a piece of paper was being torn..", said Asa. He felt a rush of pain and instinctively pulled back, but immediately continued the bout that ended with a sukuinage. "There is no bruise, but the pain shot up", he added. Later in the shitakubeya, he had some ice on it. "It's totally numb-When I touch it, I feel nothing..", he said, worried.

As he left the building he said, "I've got no time for pain. I'll do my best to cure it and be back tomorrow doing my best!!", he declared.

What's this with everyone's left shoulder??/

Asa right after the bout:

Good speech, but is it necessary to come on the dohyo tomorrow and make this injury going worst ?

(apologizes for my english)

It's not wrong to come back - Kaio often enough has proved that the top rikishi can beat the likes of Kaiho with one arm tied behind the back..

yes everybody is right, and after all, he's yokozuna so he must show the example...

I hope that he'll not make his injury worst

If it gets worse, he will certainly withdraw! But he will fight until he is really hurt...

And if I good remember, he has often some little injuries, and yet he winns all his bouts!!!

(Why do you pologize for your English? I perfectly understand it! (Reading book...) )

I hope he can continue. Hopefully this is not something serious. Tournaments are always more entertaining with a Yokozuna leading the way. (Reading book...)

I think he's alright. I watched him all the way back from the dohyo and it would have had to be a really good academy award performance if he had really been hutt. He will come out tomorrow and carry on winning...

*If* (and I hope he doesn't!) Asashoryu does pull out, any bets on the Yusho winner.... Chiyotaikai?!?

Well, I would only expect that Asa would play it tough. I think the injury is probably quite real. He does risk doing further damage by continuing, but I expect he would continue unless they have to carry him off in a strecher. This is one tough customer. I think all rikishi have various nagging injuries most of the time, but they have to play through them unless they are bad enough to make it impossible to compete.

This may add a little drama though. Is anyone going to try to grab him by that arm and make an arm throw or pull him down by the arm? Asa is left-handed too, so this is his stronger arm that is injured. Can he still do yotsu or tsuppari as well?

I am not a fan of Asashouryuu, but I still hope that he can stay in the Basho, and not suffer any further injury...i never like to see anyone get injured, and like Araiguma_Rascal said " but I expect he would continue unless they have to carry him off in a strecher." he is a very strong wrestler...we will see how he does tonight...I hope that he is able to compete at his best...never like to see anyone lose because of an injury.

Dohyo-iri today looked good...no obvious problems. Japanese announcers on NHK also said he looks fine. If there's a problem, we won't know until his torikumi...

Asashoryu did a quick harite at tachiai, and went straight to the belt, but Kaiho was also able to secure a grip. Kaiho's speed and techincal ability seemed to cause the yokozuna to be a bit cautious, with both rikishi taking their time before attempting nage-waza. Asa eventually prevailed with uwatenage, as aite's skill on the mawashi made a yorikiri attempt risky (possibly leaving 'Shoryu open to a throw attempt).

No noticable favoring of the left shoulder, though IIRC it was a right-side uwate...

My personal opinion is, that japanese media tend to exaggerate Asashoryus injuries. I for myself do not believe, that he is seriously injured until he goes kyujo.

And i also think, that Asashoryu is a warrior, who will not surrend to a slight injury.

He did stay away from using his left arm. There may be something to injury after all. Then again, maybe he is fooling us all?

Maybe it is not as bad as we thought... Or maybe you are right and he is fooling us. We will find out over the next three days. (Laughing...)

For sure, it is not as bad as his reaction at the time. Still, he is really taking care of his shoulder. He is avoiding to raise his left arm too high. For the Kaiho case, his first serious attempt stopped when it needed a strong leverage from his left arm to Kaiho's upper body. Then resorted to a right hand throw. He used mawashi grip for Iwakiyama, then knocked out Osh. Affter three days, he is finally flexing his left shoulder. Looks he is now ready to battle against the top three opponents.

This shows two things about him, I guess. He has a enough room to heal himself in a midst of basho. Looks, he is not a midless bullying machine, but a clever tactician.

It is old injury which he has suffered before too. Wouldn't call it a "shoulder injury" though as it has nothing to do with the shoulder, or does it? Not sure if the English word "shoulder" refers also to trapezius. Looks like a clear case of trapezius injury. Can't be too bad since he put strain on that muscle fully in his morozashi lift against Iwakiyama. Probably one of those weak parts in a muscle that has been injured before and it recurs every once in a while as the scar tissus cracks and snaps and makes noises and little tears occur etc. Definitely not a new injury though as he has done similar gestures before holding the exact same spot.
