Yotsu or oshi sumo?

Only 2 choices because its either one or the other. Its like Yoda said "do or do not there is no try" - "like or like not there is no fence sitting" Jacques Cousteau can rest in peace.

I was thinking about this and most of the Rikishi I like and cheer for are Yotsu and most of the ones I dont care much for are Tsuki/oshi.

I never really thought about it but I guess I was subconsciously inclined to like Yotsu proponents and it probably explains why Musashigawa beya is my least favourite beya (with the exception of Dejima), a beya full of thrusting (Applauding...)

So what spins your wheels, turns your propellor? grippers or thrusters?

p.s If you dont know what Yotsu or tsuki/oshi sumo is then now is the perfect time to find out ;-)

Funny thing for this poll to come up now, as I wondered only yesterday why I don't care much about the tsuppari guys.

I voted yotsu, but I have come to appreciate oshi-zumo more and more. There is good and bad sumo of both varieties.

I used to think that yotsu-zumo was the "better" style, perhaps because I started watching sumo during the heyday of Takanohana. But I have come to view it like this: a good rikishi uses oshi when he can, but yotsu when he must.

Those who can do both have an advantage over the one-sided ones. For instance, Hokutoriki is helpless if the bout goes to yotsu; Takamisakari is helpless against a strong oshi attack.

If the question was "do I prefer well-executed yotsu or well-executed oshi?", I'd probably have to say oshi. Making oshi-zumo look interesting definitely seems to be a harder job, so the rikishi who manage to do that tend to get my admiration, more so than yotsu specialists. (Wakanoyama absolutely rocks when he's on. Likewise the guy in my avatar...who, sadly, is decidedly not on this basho.)

Overall though, I guess I prefer yotsu-zumo, since a mediocre yotsu-bout tends to be infinitely more pretty to watch than a mediocre oshi-bout (which usually degenerates into uncoordinated pulling after a few seconds).

I find that a one-sided oshi match that lasts 2 seconds flat is unfair to the fans who paid good money to watch Sumo. It's cheating. (Exercising...)

To me the current beautiful example was of Kotoohshu-Roho match, older ones are like Takanomani-Akebono, or Onokuni-Konishiki, Mitoizumi-Takanomani...

Well, with yotsu defined so broadly and oshi defined so narrowly, i pretty much have no choice but to say yotsu. that said, for the pure versions of both, Akebono in his prime was much, much more interesting to watch than Taka in his.

but really, i prefer nage and the uchi/soto leg stuff. and of course there's nothing quite like a beautifully executed utchari. Wakanami was THE MAN!
