Kintamayama Posted May 13, 2005 Author Posted May 13, 2005 Apparently the celebrity bonus doesn't work for Kisenosato yet...picks 42-35 in favour of Jumonji at the moment. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's simply because Kisenosato isn't that good yet and hasn't been around. His initial "appeal" has worn off quickly. It's not that difficult to see his mediocre results up to now. I'm not surprised in the least-it was the reason I chose the bout. I hoped it would be pretty even, which it is so far.
Kintamayama Posted May 13, 2005 Author Posted May 13, 2005 back to the kotonowaka - futeno match:i guess more people bet on kotonowaka because they WANT him to win....i usually opt for the older guy, just because i do not trust the youngsters....and kotonowaka is extremely popular.... no herd effect for me in this game i never even look what others pick....most of the times i check on standings after making my pick....maybe that is not repesentative for most players but that's the way i do it and i am sure i am not the only one who does not look what others pick and even look to find their reason to do so in dale's movies.... btw: today i took jumonji <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Exactly. If you read my answer to Flohru, I explained what I meant by "herd effect". I know most of us don't look at other picks. The fact remains that there is an inexplicaby (to me at least) large difference in picks when it (to me) shouldn't be so big.
Flohru Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 (edited) Exactly. If you read my answer to Flohru, I explained what I meant by "herd effect". I know most of us don't look at other picks. The fact remains that Edited May 13, 2005 by Flohru
Jakusotsu Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 BTW: I just took a look at the Sekitori-Toto selections of day 6: there the koto-futeno bout was the most even picked matchup of day 6 at all, with Koto holding only a 99-5-90 selection lead!<{POST_SNAPBACK}> That could be an idea worth analyzing. Maybe we could find a significant difference between the ISP and SekiToto picks to validate the "herd effect".
Asashosakari Posted May 13, 2005 Posted May 13, 2005 Exactly. If you read my answer to Flohru, I explained what I meant by "herd effect". I know most of us don't look at other picks. The fact remains that there is an inexplicaby (to me at least) large difference in picks when it (to me) shouldn't be so big. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think I'm in the same class as Gernobono...popularity doesn't work that much on me, I think, but I have the habit of (half-consciously) picking veterans over less experienced guys. And I doubt we're the only ones. With veterans often also being the more popular rikishi, it's probably difficult to separate the two effects though. I do think the herd behaviour isn't merely based in popularity.
Fujisan Posted May 14, 2005 Posted May 14, 2005 I think I have let myself be influenced a little too much by how others vote and its when I go with my gut instinct I seem to pick right. I have crawled to 2-5 now and still dont see KK as a forlorn dream yet,I've written it off several times in the last few basho only to grab it by the skin of my teeth-So I fight on,I would at least like to survive a drop back into the blackhole.
Kintamayama Posted May 15, 2005 Author Posted May 15, 2005 Well, another day, another kill..113-40 was the guess in Aminishiki's favor. 8th straight day where the minority wins.
Fujisan Posted May 15, 2005 Posted May 15, 2005 And I fell into the same trap despite my promises. 2-6 is awful. :'-( Today I made my pick before checking everybody elses and stuck with it. (Reading book...)
Fujisan Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 And I fell into the same trap despite my promises.2-6 is awful. :'-( Today I made my pick before checking everybody elses and stuck with it. ;-) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> "2-7" Well that didn't work,NOW I give up. :'-(
Sakana Posted May 16, 2005 Posted May 16, 2005 Who is the person I have to mail to announce that I'll retire ? (Clapping wildly...) I'll finish this basho (maybe kachikoshi if kami help me (Whistling...)) and I'll be "intai"... So ? ^_^ Congratulations to Choshu-yuki (8-1), herritaro (7-2) and Kofuji (7-2). Nice score. This basho is really hard. (Showing respect...)
Kintamayama Posted May 17, 2005 Author Posted May 17, 2005 (edited) Well, a nice present to ISP players -overwhelming win today-112-40. I think today's bout is a little more difficult.. Edited May 17, 2005 by Kintamayama
Doitsuyama Posted May 18, 2005 Posted May 18, 2005 Day 11 - slight win for Guessbusters, 76 wrong, 74 correct. Chōshū-Yūki now has an unheard of (in ISP) two win lead at 10-1. Good work!
Gusoyama Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Wow, look at day 13! Kotonowaka M8E (5-7) [2] vs. Takekaze M15E (8-4) [1] East: 58 vs. West: 37 herd mentality continues?
Taka Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 Takekaze "just" needs to do what Dejima has done so many times. :-S
Taka Posted May 19, 2005 Posted May 19, 2005 (edited) Takekaze "just" needs to do what Dejima has done so many times. (Laughing...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Then again Kotonowaka needs the win "more" and has beaten "obviously not Dejima" Takekaze two times already.. Picking Kotonowaka I am! :-| Edited May 19, 2005 by Taka
Fujisan Posted May 20, 2005 Posted May 20, 2005 And I fell into the same trap despite my promises.2-6 is awful. :'-( Today I made my pick before checking everybody elses and stuck with it. (Clapping wildly...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> "2-7" Well that didn't work,NOW I give up. :'-( <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Now 6-7 on day 13-Hmmmm maybe I should have 'given up' sooner. KK Seems possible again. (Doing a wave...) (Shaking head...)
AsaMoe Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Is it possible, that i am 34/167 with 7-7 only ? If i make kk then, i would make a big rise in the banzuke, but if i make mk i will definitely fall ?
Doitsuyama Posted May 21, 2005 Posted May 21, 2005 Is it possible, that i am 34/167 with 7-7 only ?If i make kk then, i would make a big rise in the banzuke, but if i make mk i will definitely fall ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I would say, a 8-7 would give you a big rise indeed. A 7-8 could hold your rank or even give a slight rise, depending on the situation on the banzuke around you.
