Kintamayama Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 Day 1 bout, picked by Dale Carlson, Famous Founding Forefather, is: Dejima M6E (0-0) [3] vs. Hokutoriki M6W (0-0) [3] You have until 4:00 PM JST on 08-May-2005 to make your entry. Entries are accepted at http://isp.sumogames.com
Mattjila Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 Since I am, at best, a middling ISP player, I have decided to trust the auto-pick this basho. Let us see if predetermind logic (aka Skynet) can beat my usual random, meat-bag, wild guesses. My guess is 7-8 or 6-9 this time, but we shall see.

Just don't blindly trust it, because you can make only a restricted number of auto-picks (watch the big fat red writing in the rules)... You could pick your auto-pick manually to avoid this limitation.
sekihiryu Posted May 6, 2005 Posted May 6, 2005 (edited) who gets to make the picks? how does one get the honour? I would really like to have a honourary pick one day if thats possible ;-) edit : forgot the "please" (Oops! ) Edited May 6, 2005 by sekihiryu

It all depends on if Last Bout extends back to the last basho. I, in my head, think not, but my next criterion supports Dejima as well. I'm surprised some stat-guru out there hasn't figured out the best auto-pick formula from, say, the last basho. Seems like it could be a doable thing, 9! isn't small, but it isn't huge either (about 400000 or so, right?). The work would be in comparing every possible formula to the conditions of each pick and the result. Hmm...maybe I should brush up on my Ruby and see.
Kintamayama Posted May 8, 2005 Author Posted May 8, 2005 Day 2 bout, picked by Special guest-Sekihiryu, is: Kokkai M2E (0-1) [1] vs. Kotooshu M5E (0-1) [0] You have until 4:00 PM JST on 09-May-2005 to make your entry. Entries are accepted at http://isp.sumogames.com

As there is normally a 50% chance, you will, with a normal formula always end up up at an average score of 50%. And if you do not want to actively guess the outcome, you have no reason to participate anyway ?
Kintamayama Posted May 9, 2005 Author Posted May 9, 2005 Day 3 bout, picked by Guessbusters, Inc., is: Kotooshu M5E (1-1) [3] vs. Roho M1W (1-1) [2] You have until 4:00 PM JST on 10-May-2005 to make your entry. Entries are accepted at http://isp.sumogames.com
Mattjila Posted May 9, 2005 Posted May 9, 2005 And if you do not want to actively guess the outcome, you have no reason to participate anyway ? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I have actively guessed the outcome before. That didn't work out so well. So, I decided to see if a logical approach from the beginning would help. I figure I use much of the same criteria anyway when deciding who to pick (did they win their last bout? history against each other?). My apologies if I have offended you with this. I am not the greatest at the sumo games (except for the late Odd Sumo) and try to play them for my own enjoyment. If this does bother you, let me know and I will stop playing ISP. I am never near the top, so I didn't think this would cause any disruption. Just trying something out. Again, apologies.

Just a few eyebrows raised.. In any case, on day 6 your defaults will not be used and you will just be listed as absent, unless you enter a guess every three days or so, and even then, you only are allowed a grand total of 5. After 5 absences, yer out..

I've hand-picked (aka, pressed the Submit button) for each one so far. I'm just using my auto-pick logic to see how it does. Otherwise, as you say, I'd be stuck after Day 5. Although, given my current record, six of one...
