"Nothing to worry about..", said Asashouryuu after injuring his left calf in keiko this morning, as he was icing it gingerly. He had 17 bouts at home with Asasekiryuu and Touki when he hurt his foot. His flu is also still there, and he has a very sore throat. He is taking medication but- "There is no fever..I'm OK", he said..

After the keiko he was seen reading the paper with the acccount of the big train derailment yesterday and said. "I was really surprised. Man, this is really sad..".

Asashouryuu did not do any keiko today. He did some light stretches, and his injured calf was all bandaged up. His injury came in a training bout against Asasekiryuu, when their legs got entangled and they fell, as Asasekiryuu's knee hit Asashouryuu's calf.

"It seems to be a bit of a bother but it's no big deal. He just took a break today", said Takasago Oyakata.

I would be more concerned if Asashoryu didn't pick up a minor injury just before the start of a basho.....

tough thing to have two Zensho rikishi after day 15 and Asa to get the kettei-sen ... no? :-P

if only Katayama manages to slip "a la Takatoriki" style from the Torikumi comitee ... :-(

Not at all. Think Toki! (Ok, and Asasekiryu should he fail...)

BTW, will Toki be on tsuyuharai duty again? I think so.

What do you mean with "a la Takatoriki"? Takatoriki fought both Yokozuna in his yusho basho. It seems to be a doggedly persistent false memory that he didn't face a Yokozuna...

while the injury might hurt Asa, its unlikely to really effect his performence as he didnt tear anything or even strain the muscle. someone fell into it with their knee which means at the worst it will be a sore bruise. and Asa doesnt seem like the type to let that get in the way. if the initial fall didnt break a bone in his leg then it is likely just a bruised muscle and a good deep massage would work everyday before each day of the basho.

Be that as it may, keep in mind thay you NEVER know the full severity (or not) of Rikishi injuries until the Basho comes along. The real nature of injuries, any injuries is guarded as if it were top secret. It goes from "a small problem" to "died of complications" in a matter of months..

O.k. , so I'm exaggerating a bit, but these things happen a lot in the world of Sumo.

true, but if the injury did occur the way they said, it shouldnt be a big problem. now if Asaseki's knee went into the back of Asasho's knee then it could have caused legiment damage. and legiment injuries are ones that take surgury and a long time to rehab. but if the knee went into the calf all it could do is break the leg or bruise the muscle. so if he isnt on crutches right now, it should have been the later of the two. but i do see what your saying about keeping it quiet so no one really knows.

I can see it now, Asashouryuu dies, from calf injury...that would suck.

Could you pls explain to me, what Tsuyuharai is or where i could look it up ?

Since following the sumo world there always seem to be news like Asashoryu is injured, is not able to train proper, has a cold and so on. I am quite sure, that if this has happened to someone else, it would not be newsworthy. (some kind of a "dog bites asashoryu"- story)

Tsuyuharai (dew sweeper) is one of the two attendants for the yokozuna during the yokozuna dohyo-iri. The other one is called Tachimochi, or sword bearer. Now that Toki is back in Makunouchi and is in the same heya as Asashoryu, he can act in this capacity.

Asasekiryu (also from the same heya) will almost certainly be given the role of Tachimochi, as the sword is usually given (anyone know of any exceptions to this 'rule') to the higher ranked of the two attendants.

I'm pretty sure that Toki had continued to be the tachimochi even after he first dropped below Asasekiryu a year ago; they only switched roles after he had dropped to Juryo and came back up.

Seems totally healed now. He had 23 bouts against Senshuuyama and others and won them all, throwing in the occasional tsuriotoshi. "I'm feeling much better than yesterday...', he said. Let's see how he does in Souken, which is on as I am writing.

As luck would have it, we have a crack reporter or two at souken
