Ok, I live in the U.S. and I really wish that I could watch sumo. I used to be able to see it on ESPN, but they stopped showing it. I am wondering, if anyone on here knows where I can get my sumo fix. I get the feeling that I will just have to watch videos, that I download. So if any one can help me out, it would be appreciated.

I downloaded videolan from....

http://www.videolan.org/

...and now I watch the live stream (make sure yu get on early, before it reaches saturation!) over the internet, by opening the following in my videolan viewer... Of course other viewers should work, but I like videolan :-S

mms://live.sumo.or.jp/sumolive/

jejima is that address you gave at the bottom the adress to view NSK's stream before it is open after juryo ends?

i keep meaning to ask what the exact address is to start viewing it prior to makauuchi starting (as thats the time they put the link on NSK up)

thank you....is that going to initiate windows media player? im not familiar with adresses that start "mms:"

I think a properly installed Windows Media Player should start up automatically if you place that URL into your browser window. If it doesn't, just start WMP manually and go to File -> Open URL and enter it there.

wow i never noticed that. thank you for pointing that out. although i had already written down the address so that i didnt have to remember it. but now i see that wasnt even necissary. ....see you vets to this point need to point out stuff like that to us new people who arent paying attention lol

incidently, what division of the basho do they begin broadcasting?

That depends on the whim of whoever it is that's responsible for the stream. For the boring details, see this thread.

Edit: Incidentally, if you decide to watch the stream next basho, feel free to stop by the chat (also linked at the top)...we can always use more people, especially during Juryo. :-S

I still reccomend downloading videolan (as opposed to windows media player) and using that. It is free shareware, and somehow seems to be better :-S Then once downloaded, you put the mms etc address in the place where it says 'open file' and then hope that you're not too late.

They usually broadcast the whole of Juryo on the web-feed, and the last few bouts of Makushita. You can usually hook up (when they decide to link it up) at some time between 2 and 3 pm Japan time each day.

Hey thanks for the links guys (Sign of approval) . I saw the juggling on EPSN also...hmmmm juggling or sumo...ummmm lets see....I think that I would take sumo..ESPN...why must you suck? Again thanks.

If your cable company or satellite service carries TV Japan, you can see almost all of each day's makunouchi bouts live via NHK with English commentary. Unfortunately, it costs $25.00 a month to subscribe to TV Japan but to me it's worth it to see live sumo. I guess you could subscribe during the month of a basho, cancel it the next month, re-subscribe for the following basho, and keep doing that. I have no idea you'll be able to keep subscribing and cancelling, but if you can, it'll save you quite a bit of money.

They stopped showing Sumo because the souce show that was giving them the basho footage was cancelled.

So they suck for a reason.

Hmm. I'm curious how Eurosport then is able to show Sumo? They also used a source which was cancelled but apparently this isn't a problem here.

I suspect the viewership numbers for the origional highlight show weren't strong enough, or there wasn't enough of an outcry went it went off the air. Otherwise they probably would have made an effort to replace their source, like Eurosport apparently did.

I faintly recall that when Sumo Digest was cancelled, the Kyokai moved the production of the highlights show in-house in order to have the material available for their overseas customers...at any rate, does that even matter at this point? I thought Sumo Digest reappeared on a different network after a one or two basho break? (Holiday feeling...)

I don't know about the US, but in Canada, TV Japan is available on cable. That's how I can see all the sumo matches. It also enables my GF to watch all of the dramas that NHK shows. Problem is, she hasn't left the house on a Saturday night for two months because of some stupid show called Winter Sonata.

lucky you....maybe i'll move to Canada, they have socialized medacine too LOL

Canada: Sumo on TV and socialized medacine

US: no sumo and astronomical medical costs

thats a easy call to make (Whistling...)

Get her a DVD recorder and reclaim your life.

TV Japan is available through Dish Network. It's $25 monthly but if you don't subscribe to one of their regular programming packages, it's an extra $5, so we pay $30 a month (and of course you have to buy the dish). If you're fruit cake nutty about sumo though, it's worth every penny, especially so since you can choose the commentary in English. Better hurry, Natsu Basho in 9 days and 9 hours! ;-)
