Kintamayama Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 2nd edit: check this one out, ID #10, before it goes... http://sumo.goo.ne.jp/eng/ozumo_meikan/rik...ikishi.php?A=10 <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This is precisely what I was referring to in my first post when I said "I won't go any further than that..".
Kintamayama Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 Oyakata has added today that Kotoryuu is hospitalized and has lost 20 kilos.
Yubiquitoyama Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 The more I read and think about this, the more frighteningly obvious does the (already hinted at) similarity between Kotoryu's and Kenko's situations seem. It was just around the time I started following sumo on the internet so my memory on this is full of holes, but wasn't Kenko also suffering from vaguely defined liver ailments up to the time he tragically died? I just hope nothing of this is quite as bad as it is starting to sound, and that Kotoryu is soon up and oyakataing. (Eh?)
Burainoan Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Correct me if i'm wrong, but i seem to recall Kenko's problem being some type of leukemia, or something similar...and let's hope Kotoryu's problem is nothing like that. losing Kenko and Daishoho (pancreatic cancer) was sad enough. (Eh?)
Kintamayama Posted April 22, 2005 Posted April 22, 2005 Kotoryuu received a one year jun-toshiyori, and will be allowed to use his Kotoryuu shikona for that year.
Chiyozakura Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 Kotoryuu received a one year jun-toshiyori, and will be allowed to use his Kotoryuu shikona for that year. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Why only one year? So far two years have been granted for a rikishi below Ozeki. Has there been a change in the rules again?

Maybe he has to acquire/rent another "name" after that or somewthing. I have no idea about these things.. Personally, I think the reason may have to do with his health. Has there been a change in the rules again? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The length of the jun-toshiyori-period was changed from two to one year when the practice of borrowing toshiyori was allowed again. Wakanojo and Oikari also have one-year jun-toshiyori which in the case of the former runs out at the end of May. Edited April 23, 2005 by Yubiquitoyama
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 (edited) Kenko died of some very rare form of leukemia. Kotoryu's problems sound quite substantial since he is reportedly suffering from liver malfunction, diabetes and very high blood pressure. Well he has a "textbook" diabetes II belly at least as such a perfect apple belly is the classic risk factor. Not accusing Kotoryu of massive steroid abuse but these "liver malfunctions" rikishi are sometimes reported having sound a bit strange. Alcohol abuse causes liver cirrosis and other ailments but rikishi are so young that it is very unusual if that would be the main cause for these liver malfunctions. Takanohana had those famous liver problems back in 1998 or so and there have been others. Now Kotoryu. There are many reports of steroid abuse causing liver tumours and liver cell damage. Would be interesting to train to become a hepatologist, then visit ozumo as a good-will embassador and examine all livers in ozumo to see how many pathologic findings would be found. Governor of Texas had liver problems too when he was still at "look good with a smile and without clothes"-profession instead of current "look good with suit and smile"-profession. Hope to hear more reports how Kotoryu is doing and whatever the liver boogie is, it wouldn't be malign tumour. Edited April 23, 2005 by Kaikitsune Makoto
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted April 23, 2005 Posted April 23, 2005 Kotoryu was featured as Featured rikishi a while ago: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=3185

Koldonowaka Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Does anybody have Kotoryu's career records from his Hatsu basho in March 1987 to 1996. There are some results missing in my database... here. Thanks in advance

Koldonowaka Posted April 28, 2005 Posted April 28, 2005 Thanks Alexander. BTW: Congratulations to your new Ozeki Doitsuyama in CiberSumo (Sign of approval)
Mikiro Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 I will miss Kotoryu as he was one of the dwindling number of competitors left from when I was first able to see any Sumo on TV. His big man sumo was always enjoyable. I certainly wish him the best with his current health problems and hope to hear soon that he is up and about.
