Fighting for attention

By day they're policemen, financial advisers and military contractors. But by night, they trade in their uniforms and suits for what many call an oversize diaper made of canvas.

These men are sumotori, more commonly known as sumo wrestlers.

But their canvas wraps, called mawashis, are worn over spandex shorts. And the handful of men

if you forget the "mawashi over spandex shorts" part, i always feel a bit jealous of guys that can gather somewhere and just do sumo for recreation and training.(especially Nishi and Adachi ...)

i started writing srticles about sumo in a sport magazine here in Greece called Ringsports just to make the sport more known here and maybe find another fan or two.

i wouldn't mind either if this "imaginary Greek fan" would like to practice sumo a bit .... (Sign of approval)

I think that it is awesome, that people start their own little pratice of sumo. I wish that I could find a something like that, where I live.

I've competed with some of those guys before, yeah there a bunch of lucky bastards to be able to even practice sumo and have people that are interested in their area. I'd give my left nut just to be able to practice once a week, but unfortunately.... Maybe we need to start a sumoforum heya lol anyone live near Sacramento Ca? Hit me up! lol -

^^^You would give your left nut, just to be able to sumo...you could give it to science, and they would pay you $50,000. I understand what you meen, it would be so awesome, to find people that are interested, and would want to pratice. Sorry, no luck on living near you, I live in Cookeville, Tn.

He wrestled for six years before he returned to the States with the equivalent of a black belt in the sport.

So what could this 'equivalent of a black belt in the sport' be? Heavily bandaged knees? ;-)

It is a Dan rank, similar to those in other Japanese martial arts. Tom Zabel is a nidan -second degree.

The rank of shodan, or first dan, was given by the Japan Amateur Sumo Association. He got his nidan from the U.S. Sumo Federation.
