Kashunowaka Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 (edited) Last basho was meagre when it came to sansho: just a gino-sho for Hakuho. Not that there have been any sensational performances this basho, but I think that we might perhaps see more than one sansho this time. Tamanoshima will get jun-yusho, and despite his being ranked a little too low for his ability, I don't think he can be overlooked. Kaiho has been very impressive in his wins and I hope that he has impressed the sansho jury enough to award him the gino-sho for a second time. Kotomitsuki did beat the three ozeki, but he is normally a sanyaku regular and I don't think 9-6/10-5 isn't quite enough. Roho has notched up the wins without much fuss, but I don't quite feel he is a candidate at this point. My guess: Shukun-sho: none Kanto-sho: Tamanoshima Gino-sho: Kaiho Edited March 26, 2005 by Kashunowaka
Araiwa Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 What if Ama defeats Roho and gets 10 wins? Maybe he could also be considered as gino-sho candidate. His wins were not less impressive and he is still new to the division, while Kaiho had 10 wins in Kyushu last year and didn't get a price.
Coo-cook Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 What's fighting spirit price ? If it's really something to do with spirit, then Kasugao should be awarded...We see him fighting till the end despite the injuries and it's not the first time. (Applauding...)

(Applauding...) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Hmm. It is hard not to admire his fighting spirit and a bit sad to see how little he takes away from this basho in terms of rewards. Unfortunately for him the kanto-sho requires more in the way of hard results.

In any case it's just a matter of time before Ama gets the gino-sho. Unfortunately for him the kanto-sho requires more in the way of hard results. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Kachikoshi to be precise.
hoshidango Posted March 26, 2005 Posted March 26, 2005 I want to give it to Ama. Didn't use to like him but changing my mind.. I like those expressive fighting spirit guys; Ama, Kitazakura, Senshuyama, Kakizoe ..

His wins were not less impressive and he is still new to the division, while Kaiho had 10 wins in Kyushu last year and didn't get a price. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I agree. If Ama beats Roho today, he will very likely win an award. Depending on how Kaiho does, the two will split the gino and kanto awards. My guess is that if they both win, Ama will get the gino and Kaiho the kanto. If Ama loses, Kaiho will win the gino whether he wins or loses. Tamanoshima's chances for kanto is less than 50%. The committee has been extremely conservative in granting kanto sho to rikishi who are at a rank lower than usual. The rationale is that they should be winning against such competition. As Tamanoshima said himself, his wins are not all that impressive. They came at the expense of rikishi in worse doldrum, such as Kasugao and Shimotori. When he had a chance to really show his mettle against better competition (after he was 7-0), he lost rather convincingly to Tochinonada. Kotomitsuki and Kaiho. As far as shukun is concerned, the only outstanding feat these days would be to beat the yokozuna. The sanyaku are so pathetic that only Kaio, Azuma and, possibly, Hakuho will have winning records, and those three also had their rough spells. Defeating three ozeki may sound impressive, but qualitatively it wasn't much of a deal. No shukun sho again this basho. For those of you that are interested, there is a thread titled, "How Hakuho Got His Gino Sho" in Honbasho Talk.

The committee has been extremely conservative in granting kanto sho to rikishi who are at a rank lower than usual. The rationale is that they should be winning against such competition. There's certainly recent precedence for that...Miyabiyama bounced back from a 3-12 basho at Komusubi with a 12-3 jun-yusho from M7e last year and got no sansho. As that was the first time that had happened since 1962 (no sansho for a 12+ win Maegashira performance, that is), I wouldn't be surprised to see them go conservative with Tamanoshima as well. I'd still like to see him get it, of course. :-O
Zeokage Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 (edited) This is also a nice thread on who the sansho are awarded to. It's now in my bookmarks. :-O After reading the threads again, I think Ama has a good shot at the Kanto if he beats Roho. 10 wins after 3 basho with 8 (I think) probably calls for it. Kaiho probably for the Gino as he's probably expected to notch up 9/10 at M10. But how often does Gino-sho being awarded by itself happen? Answer... It happened last basho. Other times were 7/1977 and 11/1988, so not that often... Edited March 27, 2005 by Zeokage
Kashunowaka Posted March 27, 2005 Author Posted March 27, 2005 So now everyone is happy! They were more generous this time.
aderechelsea Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 go kaiho ... go kaiho .... go kaiho .... !!!! and he got the 11th win too !!! he is getting better by age ... just like wine.
Araiguma_Rascal Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 Was Roho overlooked for doing henka perhaps?
Kashunowaka Posted March 27, 2005 Author Posted March 27, 2005 Was Roho overlooked for doing henka perhaps? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The sansho were presented before today's matches.
Araiguma_Rascal Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 According to this he had 3 wins by hatakikomi, including on day 14. On the last day he won by yorikiri.

My apologies; I was thinking of Kokkai who did a (rather ugly) henka against Dejima. In any case: you cannot assume that hatakikomi ⇔ henka. Roho vs Kotomitsuki was indeed henka, but not the others.
sekihiryu Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 Here they are: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> the nesting doll rikishi (Bye, bye...)
