After Day 11...

Rikishi         #         Yen
Asashoryu     164   9,020,000
Takamisakari   51   2,805,000
Tochiazuma     39   2,145,000
Kaio           26   1,430,000
Tosanoumi      20   1,100,000
Roho           17     935,000
Kotomitsuki    16     880,000
Byuzan         12     660,000
Kotonowaka     11     605,000
Hakuho         10     550,000

Outside of Asashoryu, there was a bit of stagnation in the top five on day 11 as only Tochiazuma won. The Ozeki added 5 kensho to his total in the win over Tochinonada.

Kotomitsuki's win over Takamisakari netted him 7 kensho, the second highest total of the day behind Asashoryu's 15. Roho is moving up as well. He picked up 4 for his win against Kaiho (or at least someone who looked like Kaiho). :-P

After Day 12...

Rikishi         #         Yen
Asashoryu     183  10,065,000
Takamisakari   58   3,190,000
Tochiazuma     44   2,420,000
Kaio           32   1,760,000
Tosanoumi      20   1,100,000
Roho           17     935,000
Kotomitsuki    16     880,000
Buyuzan        12     660,000
Hakuho         11     605,000
Kotonowaka     11     605,000

Asa is 17 away from reaching 200 for the second consecutive basho.

Takamisakari is back up to 58 again after defeating Ama. Tochiazuma added 5 to his total, while Kaio's attempted dismemberment of Roho allowed him to pick up the 6 kensho placed on their bout.

No other major changes except that Hakuho is now tied with Kotonowaka for the last position in the top ten.

After Day 13...

Rikishi         #         Yen
Asashoryu     183  10,065,000
Tochiazuma     68   3,740,000
Takamisakari   64   3,520,000
Kaio           39   2,145,000
Tosanoumi      24   1,320,000
Roho           17     935,000
Kotomitsuki    16     880,000
Hakuho         15     825,000
Kotonowaka     13     715,000
Buyuzan        12     660,000

The Yokozuna/Ozeki round robin began today with Tochiazuma surprising the Golden Boy to win the 24 kensho placed on their bout. Asa will likely still reach 200 kensho, but his chance of matching last basho's record of 290 was pretty much thrown out the window by this loss.

Takamisakari added 6 kensho to his total after taking down the slumping Kisenosato, yet still fell out of second place due to Tochiazuma's huge haul in the final bout of the day.

The bout between the two other Ozeki drew 7 kensho, with Kaio winning to solidify his grip on the 4th spot in the kensho top 10.

Elsewhere, Tosanoumi added four in beating Iwakiyama, while Hakuho also picked up four in his victory over Dejima.

After Day 14...

Rikishi         #         Yen
Asashoryu     217  11,935,000
Tochiazuma     73   4,015,000
Takamisakari   71   3,905,000
Kaio           39   2,145,000
Tosanoumi      25   1,375,000
Roho           21   1,155,000
Hakuho         16     880,000
Kotomitsuki    16     880,000
Kotonowaka     13     715,000
Kokkai         12     660,000
Tamanoshima    12     660,000
Buyuzan        12     660,000

The Yusho deciding bout between Asashoryu and Kaio had no less than 34 kensho placed on it. A couple of years ago this would have been an all-time record, alas in this day and age it falls short of that mark.

Tochiazuma added 5 kensho to his total in defeating fellow Ozeki Chiyotaikai, allowing him to barely stay ahead of Robocop, who himself won 7 today, for 2nd place.

Roho's victory over Miyabiyama netted him a further 4 kensho.

Kokkai makes his first appearance on the list this basho courtesy of a win over Wakanosato, while Tamanoshima returns for the first time since day 9.

After Day 15...

Rikishi         #         Yen
Asashoryu     255  14,025,000
Tochiazuma     85   4,675,000
Takamisakari   71   3,905,000
Kaio           39   2,145,000
Tosanoumi      25   1,375,000
Roho           25   1,375,000
Hakuho         20   1,100,000
Kotomitsuki    16     880,000
Kaiho          16     880,000
Wakanosato     13     715,000
Kokkai         13     715,000
Tamanoshima    13     715,000
Kotonowaka     13     715,000
Buyuzan        13     715,000

The battle between the Yokozuna and Ozeki Chiyotaikai produced 38 kensho, which Asashoyu took home. Asa's grand total of 255 is the second highest ever behind the the 290 he earned last basho.

Tochiazuma performed a magic act in pulling victory from the jaws of defeat against fellow Ozeki Kaio and earned the 12 kensho placed on their bout. He finishes a solid second place with 85 total.

Kaiho defeated Takamisakari on senshuraku to pick up a bundle of kensho and make his first top 10 appearance of the basho, much to the delight of Aderechelsea. (Bye, bye...)

Roho and Hakuho each added 4 to their respective totals to round out the day 15 movers and shakers.

Thats all from the land of the kensho, see you all next basho...

Thanks for the steady kensho reports!

By the way, did anyone mention that Asashoryu switched again to the right hand today? He did...

I have just now had the time to finally watch all the Day 15 movies @ banzuke.com. I noticed that Hakuho picked up kensho that looked like arrows. I've never seen this before. What is the significance/meaning of these vs. the typical envelopes?

I think that on the final day of the basho, the winners of the last 3 matches recieve arrows, a bow string and a bow respectivly.

Normally the first of those 3 matches is a Sekiwake vs Sekiwake-bout, so Hakuho got the arrows. I think it has nothing to do with the number of kensho placed on the match.

When the arrows etc were first introduced, it was in the time of long ago when the East side of the banzuke fought against the West side.

The arrows were meant for the winner of the Komusubi clash, the bow strings for the sekiwake clash, and the stringless bows for the Ozeki clash.

These days it is just simplay a matter of rank. Unless something has gone out of kilter (eg a late kyujo from one of the top rankers), then on day 15 the top two ranked rikishi will fight for the bows, the 3rd and 4th for the strings, and the 5th and 6th for the arrows. Currently, as there are 4 yokozuna and ozeki, this means that the third bout will be an-all sekiwake bout, but this does not necessarily have to be the course.....

As an aside, one wonders whether Asashoryu has got any of his many bows (from senshuraku) stringed.

Archery is (of course) one of the three classic sports of Mongolia - I think (Punk rocker...)

I watched his last bout on Dales' site and how he took the kensho. But there wasn't a bow for him. (Punk rocker...)

I've read many times that the last 3 winners receive arrows, string and bow but I've only seen arrows, never a bow. Or does the bow go to his yobidashi and he gives it then to Asashoryu?

sometime ago i asked the same question, and apparently they do not give out the string and bow anymore. only the arrows.

I believe they do give out the strings (in a small box attached to the kensho bundle?). The bow is now (quite ceremoniously) given to the yumifuri-rikishi who does his number with it.
