Kintamayama Posted March 5, 2005 Posted March 5, 2005 (edited) 70 rikishi in all, including the 16 under-average guys, had their physicals today. 4 entrants did not meet with the standards and were rejected. The entrants include the new 16 year old Russian Soslan Alexandrovich Gagloev we heard of. He was a member 0f Rohou's father's wrestling gym. Edited March 17, 2005 by Kintamayama

This new boy is bound for sekitori unless he becomes homesick and quits, but I doubt that having in mind the civil war in his home country. ;-)

kotooshu_bulgaria Posted March 10, 2005 Posted March 10, 2005 there is no civil war in North Ossetia. it's a Russian province. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> OK, I guess I should correct myself, civil war is not the right term, although it might happen in the near future. You being from Georgia, however, know very well that the sitiation in the region is very volatile. (In a state of confusion...) Back to sumo though, this guy will be enjoying many more opportunities there than in his home region. Lets see how he fares in mae-zumo!:-(
Senpai Posted March 12, 2005 Posted March 12, 2005 So much about Soslan! But what to think about that new pack of youngsters? Is there any bright stars or possible good prospects?

Sasanishiki Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 Nakanishi Kenji (22) - Onomatsu, 187 cm, 157 kg, Tokyo He was a fourth year student at Senshu Univerity, majoring in business. He was originally from Meguro Gakuin High School. He has had some success in amateur sumo in 2004, as detailed below: * Best 8 (quarterfinals) at the 44th All Japan University Usa Invitational tournament * Winner in the open class at 31st East Japan University Individual weight Class tournament * Best 8 at the 52nd University/Business Kariya Invitational tournament * Japanese Representative in Lisbon, Portugal asa member of a Japanese Budo team in "Japan Week" In addition he was a member of the Senshu University team which fared alright in a few tournaments. His comments at entering Ozumo: "My feelings of looking forward to what is ahead are stronger than any worries. I will rely on yostu-zumo. I'd like to make sekitori in about two years. I'm aiming to emulate my university sempai Katayama. I'm trying my hardest to get to sekitori as soon as possible." Comments from Mr Ono, his coach at Senshu University: "With yotsu-zumo he won last year's East Japan University Individual Weight Class tournament. He has a hidari-uwate winning patter but I'd like him to attack positively with a strong tachiai. He has the basics, but to use them in the pros it is necessary that he disciplines his spirit." Coments from Onomatsu Oyakata: "He is blessed with his physique, and he also has fortitude. I believe he has great potential. To what extent can he train those qualities? Fundamentally he has yotsuzumo skills, but I'd like him to work on his offensive abilities and on disciplining his spirit."
Asashosakari Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 Speaking of blessed physiques (thanks for the information on Nakanishi!), for anyone who doesn't care to read through the whole list, I'd like to point out these four specimen: Iwashita Tsubasa (15) - Azumazeki, 180 cm, 179 kg, KyotoMaeta Masaru (22) - Hanaregoma, 179 cm, 204 kg, Yamagata Matsuda Shinya (18) - Otake, 177 cm, 198 kg, Hyogo So Hiroshi (15) - Kasugayama, 181 cm, 190 kg, Miyazaki There seems to be quite some weight currently competing in mae-zumo. (Pulling hair...)
Hakuyobaku Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 That is really exceptional - How many Japanese rikishi are 200+ or even 180+ these days? I'd say, not more than 2-3 over 200 and about 20-30 over 180 - of about 700 rikishi! so that is a good generation physicquewise at least. Disclaimer: numbers might be a bit off
Sasanishiki Posted March 14, 2005 Posted March 14, 2005 As an oyakata I would be more interested in how they move rather than how heavy they are. You can put on weight, but it is harder to teach movement. If they are heavy, can they move well on the dohyo? The lethal combination is size and bulk as well as speed. That is what heavier rikishi like Konishiki, Musashimaru and Akebono had in their favour, not just size.
Kintamayama Posted March 17, 2005 Author Posted March 17, 2005 (edited) 17 of the first batch of new entrants were named "Ichiban Shusse". These guys all won their first three Maezumo bouts and will be ranked highesrt among the new entrees in Jonokuchi next basho . Wakonohou (Soslan) and Fukunaga the former Junior world Champion. The 17 include one returning rikishi (banzuke gai). These are them, names and heya: (I'm guessing some of the shikona here..) Marikomaru (returning banzuke guy..)Azumazeki Maeta -Hanaregoma-204 kilo human Nishimura-Kasugano Yamashita-Isenoumi Nakanishi-Ounomatsu (College amateur wrestling Champion) Morita- Nishikido Koga -Ounomatsu Kimura (changed name to Itasegawa? 板瀬川) Kasugayama Sasanuma-Kasugayama Matsuda(changed name to Oomatsuda)- Ootake Fukunaga-Sakaigawa (two junior middleweight titles, Sawai's rival, 1.68 centimeters) Soslan-Wakanohou - Magaki Sumi-Nakamura (plural of Sumo?) Kiyono-Hakkaku Nakata-Nakamura Tateyama (Changed to Takakiyama)-Takanohana Hatayama-Shikoroyama Edited March 17, 2005 by Kintamayama
Asashosakari Posted March 17, 2005 Posted March 17, 2005 (edited) Thanks Moti! (Sign of approval) Kimura (changed name to Itasegawa? 板瀬川) Kasugayama <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Who's this? The two Kimura's in maezumo are from Naruto and Kitanoumi, respectively... Matsuda(changed name to Oomatsuda)- Ootake I hope that's the 'dai' kanji they've picked for the 'o'...it would certainly fit in his case, given his 198 kg. ;-) Edited March 17, 2005 by Asashosakari
