Ishide is a superb example of a rikishi who came back after long spell of some kind of health problems. Personally I was sure he is going to intai any moment when he was losing in makushita, losing weight and looking extremely weak. Now he is powerful again and ever so dynamic. Was it ever disclosed what the "health problem" was that took his strength away?

Ishide's makuuchi success remains to be seen but at least he brings on a very dynamic approach and will meet many rikishi he obviously never met (at least in makuuchi ;-) ). Looking forward to seeing how he handles his makuuchi foes.

Diabetes, sir.

Somewhat off-topic...as a complete medical layman, I'm always stunned just how much diabetes seems to debilitate a rikishi. In many ways, it appears to be much more immediate a problem than, say, chronic knee troubles (e.g. Aminishiki, Ushiomaru). I don't think it's ever been addressed directly on the forum, so if Kaikitsune or anybody else could provide an overview of the mechanisms that are at work here in weakening affected rikishi so much, I for one would greatly appreciate it.

Well done to Ishide!

Now I see he wasn't changing his name just to escape his earlier juryo efforts when he scuppered my Rotosumo team. :-) (Shaking head...)

I'm a medical layman myself, but I have had diabetes since I was 20 years old. I was a fool and didn't see a doctor to get myself diagnosed for ten months so my experience may not be typical (and I'm not a rikishi (Shaking head...) ) but before I began treatment I was terribly fatigued byeond anything I have felt before or since... some days I felt like I could barely get out of bed and I had to repeat a few classes because fell asleep so much I never learned anything... so I can't imagine getting much good keiko done in that condition.

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but Ishide seems to me just plain lucky to be where he is at the moment. No way is he Makuuchi caliber.

3-12 and down. Very down. So low it may even be unfair.

3-12 sounds a bit harsh to me, given that the bottom of Makuuchi isn't exactly stacked with people on the rise these days. Still, kachi-koshi this time is probably too much to ask for, I agree.

fujisan and his one track (sumo games) mind hahaha

sometimes i think REAL sumo is a sideshow to the gaming world for you.

well each to their own.

Yes unfortunately it is but not by choice Nishinoshima!

I cant see the real sumo since British eurosport stopped airing the bashos so all I have to keep my love of sumo alive is this forum and the sumo games-I am trying to make the most of both of them.
