O.k. so what's the weirdest shikona anyone has heard of? As I've heard some weird one's before lol cant really recall them all at the moment but a couple that standout are first off some dude who's name was "Makushita"?? lol whats up with that... "Kitakachidoki" stands out also and "Kenko" or "Itai" ( "Iteeee"! lol) I havent been around that long hopefully some of you have heard of some good ones. (If having a little fun with rikishi's names youve heard is just too below your level then by all means, quickly go to a different post and resume your game of pocket pool lol). -

Not quite what you asked but there is a rikishi in Jonidan whose shikona is Tochinokuni but whose real name is Ozeki.

In my first office job in Japan, one of my co-workers was a lady named Ozeki. I made the mistake of joking about her great sumo name. I got a quick lesson in the difference between Ozeki (おぜき/尾関/a common surname) & Oozeki (おおぜき/大関/second highest rank in sumo). (Punk rocker...)

I thought about that and checked the name of this Tochinokuni. He indeed has the name oozeki, even with the proper kanji 大関. (Punk rocker...)

weirdest name is

chiyohakuho to me....

Why? Because there already is a Hakuho? Well, then Hakuho should the weird one because Chiyohakuho had his shikona two years earlier than Hakuho... Edited by Doitsuyama

Guys currently active:

ARASHITENYUU- for obvious reasons..(Ara- shit-en yuuuu..)

BIZENNISHIKI--sounds funny.

BUNGONISHIKI--jumps from very high places as a hobby.

CHICHII- sounds like a name of a chimp in some nature movie.

ECHIZENYAMA--sounds kinki.

FUKKOYAMA-- no explanation needed..

GOTENYU- "Oh my God" in Yiddish. Really.

KAYAKI--I guess he's down by the river between bashos.

MOGAMINISHIKI

SEIFU- works as a first base ump between bashos.

SHOSHO- semi butterfly

UCHIGOSHIKI- sounds more like a kimarite than a rikishi.

WAKAKENGO- adding a "ruu" at the end will have him hopping about down under.

YOTSUGURUMA-- 4X4?

ZENDAISHO- sounds like a name of a tournament.

All active, real rikishi.

My "favourite" is Kitakachidoki which sounds like a game you play in a school playground to me.

For me the weirdest shikona are the ones that have to be presented partly in hiragana because most fonts won't support the obscure kanji.

Yotsukasa is the most obvious example of that. The Yo should look like Hanahadashi (as in ka from Chuka ryori) with a fire radical on the left side.

Kaishozan has an odd sho. It took me a long time to find that one.

Beppu and KotoBeppu sound odd to me. What kind of name is Beppu? What does that mean? It sounds too much like Geppu.

Other shikona that I find odd are those involving unusual readings of kanji such as Shikona with Suruga. Once you learn the combination, it's ok, but until then, you would likely not get it right.

How about Ooga? Big Fang? Nice.

Beppu is a famous onsen place right near Oita, the home prefecture of Kotobeppu.

It is one of the most tacky places for onsen tourism in Japan. It has various "hellish" names for tourist spots with hot steaming volcanic pools and people cooking eggs in them. You can also bury yourself in hot sand.

I regretted visiting it, but Yufuin onsen, located nearby in the hills is worth a visit.

It always struck me as weird that (Akebono) is only one single kanji. Makes him very easy to spot on hoshitori (even for an illiterate like me...)

Beppu is a little tacky, but I found the actual town pretty interesting, not the surrounding hot pools. There was a really good hot sand bath off the main road from the station a wee way down the hill. Very relaxing. There was also a good little shokudo (cafeteria) on the same side of the road (right hand walking down the hill) that had plenty of traditional vegetable dishes. Very handy when you travel with a vegetarian. ;-) (Oops! )
