First question: does *anyone* deserve to get a sansho this basho? To begin with there are no "certain" sansho, such as the shukun-sho for beating the yokozuna, or the kanto-sho for double-digit newcomer. And there have been very few standout performances. Anyway, here is my guess:

Shukun-sho: none

Kanto-sho: none

Gino-sho: Hakuho

Kotooshu could perhaps get a sansho if he wins tomorrow. :-/

How about a kanto-sho (or gino-sho) for Tochiazuma? Since he's not ozeki, it should be possible, shouldn't it?

Kotooshu may get a gino-sho if he wins tomorrow ...

if he loses he gets nothing, like Kaiho did last time with his senshuraku kuroboshi ...

Yes, I mentioned in the chat that I would like to see him get a sansho, but in the end I don't think he will. But he is among the candidates!

Gino-sho could go to Hakuho or Kotooshu i guess /Tochiazuma didn't show his best though/

But when we compare Hakuho and Kotooshu, who really showed better sumo? who really faced thougher opponents? As for me, I will go for White Phoenix :-/

I like tochiazuma as a candidate too.

How about Miyabiyama is he wins tomorrow? He has been awfully steady in the last few bashos after having been written off by most people.

Well, it should be obvious by now that Hakuho is doing better than Kotooshu this basho, since he also won the bout between the two. Therefore, it should be Hakuho getting the prize, naturally.

It's not a given. If they went strictly by win-loss records and head-to-head bouts, we wouldn't have this discussion. Questions to ask: who has received sansho before? Who is a relative newcomer, facing the joi-jin for the first time? Who is better-looking and more popular with the crowd? Why has Takamisakari won 5 sansho (including the prestigious gino-sho twice)? Why has Toki never won a sansho? Unlike promotions and demotions, there doesn't have to be any logic involved in the awarding of sansho.

Is shukun-sho is only for those who win yokozuna?

Hakuho can be a good nominee for shukun-sho this time, while Kotooshu is worth of gino-sho.

For Tochiazuma, I think his ex-ozeki status will "prevent" him from the sho.

Thinking a bit about this, I finally input my non-original guess:

Gino-sho to Hakuho and Kanto-sho to Tochiazuma.

Of course, I also HOPE Azuma will get it! :-D

This was my guess too. The Kyokai agrees with a Gino-sho for Hakuho, but no Kanto-sho or Shukun-sho this basho. Looks like Kashunowaka gets it right again.

Just wondering: Does Tochiazuma count as a full fledged Sekiwake in the san-sho race? 10-5 but more than that 11-4 at Sekiwake is more often than not enough for a san-sho, but far as I know there has never been a just demoted Ozeki who won one before.

I also wondered about that, especially since Miyabiyama didn't get a sansho with 12-3 last year.

Former Ozeki can win sansho as Takanonami proved in 2002, but I mean an Ozeki who can win his rank back with 10-5 the basho after he was demoted. To my taste 11-4 at Sekiwake should be good enough when there are no other candidates like this time.

But as the Miyabiyama example shows it is obviously more difficult for former Ozeki to get a sansho in general.
