by the way doitsu-san asashoryu reached 10 yusho in one basho LESS than taiho took. perhaps you were talking about age-wise though?

No, I was looking at it since Makuuchi debut. Actually, Asashoryu needed quite a bit until he won the first yusho, compared to Taiho anyway. 12th basho to 6th basho in Makuuchi. There certainly are a lot ways to keep record here...

Oh, and thanks for cutting some slack... I thought people living in Japan would find it easier to understand, as the language is a lot more context-dependent in Japan. So, in a Sumo-Forum anyway, context No. 1, Konishiki lives, and context No. 2, Taiho isn't active. Everything should be clear.

What if you say "late Konishiki" instead of "the late Konishiki"? is that maybe a way around that?

That would still be likely to be misunderstood. To be clear and precise in meaning one must use another expression, although it may require a few extra words. I certainly didn't mean to pick on Doitsuyama. His English is good enough that it did not occur to me that he might not be a native speaker.
