Food is always my favorite topic of mine (well wine is also but that's another subject). I alluded about NHK's cooking program in one of Japanese posts earlier as they were doing recipes for the New Year as in Japan as well as in China and other Asian nations, they do have very elaborate special foods based on a theme of good fortune during the New Year time (actually it's a great time to be there).

Anyway I am very interested to hear if you are preparing or eating some special food during this Christmas/Hanukkah or holiday season.

Around here we go for roast turkey, roast beef, ham or lamb - kind of stuff you can put in the oven and let it go type of things plus those cups of Egg Nog that magically appear around this time. Egg Nogs just kill me and I promise to stay away from it every year without much success.

In Japan whenever I was around there in Christmas time (as it is not a holiday there) I don't think there was anything elaborate just went to get a roast chicken and strawberry short cake which more or less was the christmas cake there. But then the milage may vary for some members residing there now.

My wife spent several years in Vienna as an exchange student and she still talks about the enchanted Austrian Christmas having Sachertorte and Christmas cookies as well as those delicious Gluwein. As a matter of fact she couldn't stand it any longer and she visited there with her mom in Christmas a couple of years ago (I had to work :'-(

Well please let me know about your special holiday food in where you live. I am more than curious and often voracious (Clapping wildly...)

Anything made of pig and potatoes, really. This used to be a very rural country. And loads of lard, that is important to keep the winter chill out.

when i was a child the traditional food for new years eve was a carp...and one was supposed to keep a scale from the carp in your purse to make sure you never ran out of money...during the holiday season there was a special kind of cake (okay...lots of spechial kinds) named stollen...its a kind of sweat bread and eaten with butter...and lots of cookies that are traditionally for the holiday season.

when i lived in france the thing i liked most where the buche noel...it was challange to prepare....

this year we are going to have some ragout of venison with potato dumplings not the traditional food...but still nice in the winter....
