TB: [pick?]

(* marks rikishi with no makekoshi since debut, ** marks rikishi with no makekoshi since re-debut)

The scoring and thus your game assignment:

  • For sanyaku: Please predict an exact record for each rikishi. The target record will be calculated after the deadline and will be chosen so that it bisects the predictions as evenly as possible. The predictions will then be converted into + and - votes as usual; one point for each correct prediction.
  • For lower-ranked rikishi: Please predict for each rikishi if he will finish KK or MK; one point for each correct prediction.

(For clarification: If you're expecting an outright makekoshi for one of the sanyaku high-rankers, just predict MK, exact records are only needed on the kachikoshi side of things.)

First tie-breaker: From among those 13 guys up there and the further 10 rikishi who are currently just shy of a 5-KK streak (6 of 7 'veterans' [Kotokenryu is kyujo] + MsTd Hanaoka + 3 newcomers from maezumo), please guess how many KK you expect in total. Your tie-breaker guess may be anything from 0 to 23. Only exactly correct guesses qualify at this tie-breaker stage. Note: Sanyaku count as correct for the tie-breaker if they achieve KK, they do not need to meet their target records.

Next 12 tie-breakers if needed: Correctly predicted rikishi, one-by-one in ballot order, i.e. starting at Onosato.

Extra tie-breakers, should two or more players have entered identical ballots: Proximity of their tie-breaker guesses to the correct number, followed by proximity of their sanyaku rikishi guesses to the correct records (one-by-one in ballot order).

Final tie-breaker: earliest entry.

Note: Rikishi who show up on the before-shonichi kyujo list will be excluded from scoring (even if they end up joining the basho later), so it is not necessary to re-submit your entry if you picked such a rikishi as a KK; he will not count for points anyhow. You may, however, notify me if you'd like to reduce your tie-breaker guess by one point to compensate for the "missing" rikishi. Your position on the entry list (for final tie-breaker purposes) will be deemed unchanged in this special situation. Any other changes to a ballot will be considered a new entry, with correspondingly lower priority for the final tie-breaker.

Deadline: Shonichi 2pm JST.

Lots and lots of lopsided selections this time including four unanimous ones that now unfortunately won't impact the game at all, other than in the tiebreaker score.

Fortunately the three sanyaku-ranked ballot members attracted very diverse picks - all eight possible combinations of their results are represented. Amid suspicions of a late-basho injury from November still affecting him, yokozuna Onosato has received much lower expectations that we're used to seeing for him. His Hatsu basho target record stands at only 11-4 (down from the usual 13-2), and even that attracted only minority support. Conversely, freshly promoted ozeki Aonishiki is said to finish at least 12-3 by almost half of us, up from 11-4 despite the usual thinking that the promotion festivities should impact a debuting ozeki's results negatively. Lastly, senior ozeki Kotozakura has been tabbed for a 9-6 target this time, up from 8-7. (And notably, hasn't attracted any MK votes for a change.)

With so many (near-)unanimous choices it's no surprise that there are many very similar entries. Around half the player pairs share at least 10 out of their 13 picks, topped by six pairs that only differ on one pick (Asashosakari/Holleshoryu, Athenayama/Fashiritētā, chishafuwaku/Sakura, Hakuryuho/Oskanohana, Hisui/Holleshoryu, Holleshoryu/Masutarida), and even one duo that have submitted entirely identical lineups. Fortunately Asashosakari/Masutarida have different TB picks, so there's going to be some way to separate them if needed. The average agreement amounts to 9.3 slots or 72%, which I'm pretty sure is by far the highest it's been since I started to quantify it a couple of years ago. Incidentally, the lowest agreement comes courtesy of Holleshoryu/Jejima with a mere 5 picks in common.

Based on the previous details, it won't shock you that Jejima's drone-y entry has also come in as the most uncommon ballot, perhaps helped to that position by usual contender WAKATAKE's absence this basho. Even so there are only 5 non-mainstream picks on Jejima's ballot, but going against the two heavily MK-expected rikishi Chiyotaiyo and Nishinoryu has driven the unusualness to heights unreached by any other entrants. Nevertheless, Fashiritētā's entry also features five minority choices, while Athenayama/Hakumadashi/Hakuryuho each have four.

The most average entry was produced by Tetsuarashi, having bet against the majority only with Toshinofuji's KK (the closest-run slot we have this basho). Asashosakari/Hisui/Masutarida follow right behind, all selecting one minority choice as well (but 7:10 rather than 8:9), with ryafuji also on their heels (with a single 6:11).

Lastly, a nice spread of picks for the tie-breaker score, without any particular insanities. 5 entrants each went for the most favoured choices 13 or 14, and a couple or three took 12, 15 or 16.

Good luck to everyone!

I am quite surprised only one other entry has Kotozakura finishing 10-5 or better. I considered putting him at 11-4, given he's been a lock for KK even with massively debilitating injuries and it seemed to me as if those had gotten much better. Yoshi and Ura have proven quite incompetent on the first two days, but so far I'm feeling confident that I might've had a point there.

There was no reason to believe he has recovered (and I am still not entirely convinced he has).
