As usual not officially confirmed by the Kyokai's kyujo page just yet, the following list has been derived from the Fanclub schedule previews (free account required).

For rikishi who aren't newly absent for Hatsu basho it is noted how long they've been out of action.

No sekitori will be absent at the start of the tournament.

Ms1e Mita (Futagoyama) - Kyushu Basho Day 3
Ms6e Kotokenryu (Sadogatake)
Ms17w Daiamami (Oitekaze)
Ms48w Toshunryu (Tamanoi) - Kyushu Basho Day 9
Ms49e Oyamatoumi (Yamahibiki) - Kyushu Basho Day 9
Ms51w Kotodaigo (Sadogatake)

Sd30w Kyokutendo (Oshima)
Sd58w Sengaku (Kise) - Kyushu Basho Day 5
Sd65w Kobayashi (Kasugano) - start of Aki Basho

Jd2e Nagata (Dewanoumi)
Jd7w Ojiyama (Tagonoura)
Jd8w Yamenosato (Nishiiwa)
Jd19w Kuwae (Futagoyama)
Jd23e Kosei (Hidenoyama)
Jd33w Ideno (Hidenoyama)
Jd55w Kyoda (Futagoyama) - start of Kyushu Basho
Jd72w Kojikara (Tagonoura) - start of Aki Basho
Jd80w Kiryuko (Tatsunami) - Haru Basho Day 7
Jd83w Fujiizumi (Nishikido) - start of Nagoya Basho
Jd86e Wakasa (Dewanoumi)
Jd86w Nishikio (Nishikido)

Jk2e Aron (Nakamura) - start of Nagoya Basho
Jk8w Takano (Kise) - start of Kyushu Basho
Jk13w Sadanojo (Sakaigawa)
Jk14e Suzaki (Otake) - start of Natsu Basho
Jk18e Minatoryu (Minato)
Jk18w Hayashiryu (Nishonoseki) - Nagoya Basho Day 13
Jk21e Komanokuni (Shibatayama) - Kyushu Basho Day 3

It's possible and perhaps even likely that Jk20w Seki isn't actually absent and just hasn't found an opponent for round one; that should be confirmed by the official list tomorrow. Edit: Confirmed as suspected, newcomer Seki is in and will merely have his first match delayed to a later day.

28 rikishi are starting the basho on the sidelines.

Jd83w Fujiizumi (Nishikido) - start of Nagoya Basho

Nishikido-okamisan mentioned when the banzuke was released that Fujiizumi has retired for "illness treatment" (病気療養). Hopefully it will be successful whatever it is for.

Meanwhile, Onaruto-oyakata (former Ozeki Dejima) had to take a short break from his shimpan duties today. Awanoumi fell from the dohyo and landed on him in the first Makushita bout of the day, Onaruto had to be helped up by the on-duty medics and out of the arena for treatment. Ajigawa (former Sekiwake Aminishiki) took over the head shimpan seat, while Kiyomigata (former Sekiwake Tochiozan) arrived to fill his vacant seat. Eventually Onaruto was able to return, although he took that seat under the white tassle rather than return to the head shimpan position.

Jeez, the poor kid!  He finally makes Makushita after 45 basho, changes his shikona from his given name, and in his first bout wipes out the head shimpan.

One rikishi withdraws from the lower divisions ahead of Day 3:

Jd39e Onojo (fusenpai Day 2)

Jonokuchi gyoji Shikimori Tomosaburo is also kyujo as of Day 2.
