Asashosakari Posted November 11, 2025 Posted November 11, 2025 (edited) Seki-Toto (play): There's some very big news to start things off: We have a new yokozuna! And it's somebody who wasn't even on the radar yet just a short time ago, as the following is the entirety of his Toto career to date: 2024.09 NR 7-6-2 2024.11 Ms4e 12-3 D 1st-2nd place tie 2025.01 J4e 10-5 6th-13th place tie 2025.03 M15e 14-1 Y 1st place outright 2025.05 K2e 13-2 Y 1st place outright 2025.07 O3e 11-4 3rd-7th place tie (behind two 12-3's) 2025.09 O1e 12-3 Y 1st place outright I didn't get to talk about the player's ozeki promotion four months ago, which of course was rather unusual having come directly from komusubi, but it followed my established precedent that back-to-back yusho (actually, just back-to-back top scores, even as runner-up) are sufficient for promotion if the first one was from a high enough rank to get the player into sanyaku. On the other hand, the two promotion tournaments to yokozuna may look just a little bit soft on their own - now, as in the real thing I intend to look only at what the player has done as ozeki, not before he got there, but I also can't ignore what he did. And what he did is, quite frankly, perhaps the best 6-basho run any player has ever put up in Toto's nearly 25-year history. As such I considered third place + yusho to be a perfectly acceptable promotion case. Congratulations, Kachikoshi! In incumbent yokozuna news: Pandaazuma has had a very good time himself in recent months with four consecutive double-digit results, the last two being the near-mirror image of Kachikoshi's - Pandaazuma had 12 wins as a doten runner-up in July, and 11 wins as one of three jun-yusho players behind Kachikoshi in September. Things haven't gone nearly as well for Norizo, however: His most recent four results were only 7-8, 9-6, 8-7 and 5-9-1, so he's at two and a half demerit points and any makekoshi in either Kyushu or Hatsu (or two 8-7's) will spell the end of his 13-year yokozuna tenure. We had entered Aki basho with five ozeki but are now down to just three, as Kachikoshi wasn't the only one to leave the rank: Joaoiyama unfortunately followed up on his 7-8 from July with a 5-9-1 to earn a demotion the "regular" way (more on that in a moment). Having become ozeki less than two years ago it's already the second time he drops, after the first one was followed by an immediate return with 11 wins. Perhaps that's in the cards this time as well? Ganzohnesushi was also kadoban in Aki basho after a July 6-9, but posted credible enough 9 wins to clear his name for the new banzuke. He is the only remaining ozeki not at risk of demotion in Kyushu, as both Andoreasu and Susanoo have produced back-to-back 8-7 scores to give themselves one demerit point each. A makekoshi this month would thus give them a record equivalent to two MK and spell demotion. Good luck! All three Aki sekiwake DeRosa, Panic!attheDohyo and Kajiyanosho posted nice records with 9 or more wins and are actually on fairly lengthy streaks of 9+ wins, too, but they're all missing a real highlight result that would push them into promotable territory. (DeRosa was actually very close after Nagoya, but I should talk about that in the Aki update if I ever find the time to fill that in...) Nevertheless, a big Kyushu score could make things happen very quickly as the foundation is definitely there for all of them. That is, in fact, also true for komusubi ScreechingOwl(et) to whom I really need to apologize that he's still not sekiwake. Normally I try to promote any 9-6 or better komusubi to sekiwake. Promotions on exactly 9-6 have been waived often enough in the past - especially here in Toto, less so the other two games - that I wouldn't consider that scenario anything close to a strict rule, and so the Owl was just garden-variety unlucky when his Nagoya 9-6 didn't yield a promotion for Aki. However, this time around he was 10-5 and I'm afraid I still wasn't able to fit him in as I keep bumping up against existing sekiwake who just don't go makekoshi and the SB-mandated maximum of 12 sanyaku spots. As such ScreechingOwl sadly had to settle for one of the two required komusubi slots again. But as you can see at the very start of this post I'm quite okay with promoting players directly from komusubi to ozeki if the circumstances warrant it, and this is definitely one of those situations if something truly promotion-worthy were to happen this month. Overall, Aki basho was quite a weird tournament in that the higher-ranked players were unable to display their usually assumed skill advantage. Makuuchi players only posted a winning percentage of 50.7%, barely higher than what those in juryo (50.2%) or makushita (49.7%) achieved. The basho was also marred by severe technical problems on Day 7 which caused a number of players to pick up an absence on that day and so the number of actual kachikoshi records was - especially in juryo - somewhat lower than one would assume from balanced win-loss totals. That caused some issues starting from the low maegashira ranks where I ended up giving small promotions to 7-8 players to make things work. I did try the alternative of filling the available gaps with overpromoted KKs, but that only caused other undesirable distortions. As the "there's no good way to make the 7-8's demote" issue continued from low maegashira all the way through juryo anyway, it made more sense to treat it all the same rather than force a bad solution onto a couple of makuuchi ranks specifically just for appearance's sake. The KK players still received very healthy promotions, so I don't think there are going to be any complaints. Asashosakari Posted November 16, 2025 Author Posted November 16, 2025 (edited) (Haven't forgotten...) Seki-Quadrumvirate (play): Aki basho proved to be a tough challenge to most contestants, and the average winning rate only came in at 42.0%. And as frequently happens in such editions of the game, the upper-ranked players failed to assert their skill advantage: The 37 active makuuchi players totalled 41.1%, while the 43 players of juryo and makushita managed to win 42.8% of their entries. Now, those results should have lent themselves to an easy +1 win adjustment for the banzuke (42% = 6.3 wins out of 15), but it wasn't to be. The Day 7 technical issues along with the usual smattering of other missed days meant that the average number of actual wins per player was only about 5.8, so adjusting everything by +2 had to be a consideration. In short, I tried both versions. +1 did make an okay-looking banzuke possible, but for almost every 7-8 or kosho score, even just keeping them in place required a small overpromotion for some KK player. That's fine as a one-off if no better solution exists, but if it has to be done everywhere, something's probably wrong. (My ranking framework already promotes KKs very aggressively, after all, and if that isn't enough to make things work...) In addition, almost all the demotion scores looked visually off, 5-10's dropping three ranks and the like. So, +2 turned out to be the much more reasonable choice, and other than a slight crunch at the end of makuuchi / start of juryo there were no issues with that despite a bit of a kachikoshi overhang (21 KK / 16 MK in makuuchi, 22 / 21 the rest). A lucky turn of events for the 10 players who saw their 6-9's upgraded to 8-7's. Actually, though, there were 13 scores of 6-9 - all three ozeki posted that as their results, and as their score adjustments are strictly formula-based rather than on vibes, they were only entitled to +1 and thus still ended up with makekoshi 7-8's. Ganzohnesushi (the previous yusho winner) and Norizo had entered the basho with clean slates and so there's no immediate demotion worry for them, but Kobashi drops from soft to hard kadoban status and will be battling for his rank in Kyushu. Three sekiwake went makekoshi which was especially bad news for Andrasoyama, the only one among them on a strong ozeki run, one that feasibly could have been completed with just 9 wins. Thus only Athenayama managed to hang on to his place in the third-highest rank, where he is now joined by Kitakachiyama and Flohru who both had impressive "real" kachikoshi (8 wins before adjusting) as komusubi and M1 respectively. Four other Aki maegashira comprise an all-new komusubi lineup, for a sanyaku that has expanded from 9 to 10 slots. Finally, a word about the yusho winner. It won't come as a surprise that it was somebody from outside the top division, and this player did it with an extremely strong performance given the overall difficulty of the basho. Joputosu finished 12-3 and two wins ahead of everybody else, and was even up by three after Day 14 when the yusho was secured. The consequence was a massive promotion from J2w all the way to M4w. That's in fact Joputosu's top division debut after two years of play - I'm not sure anyone ever entered makuuchi that high for the first time in any of my rankings before. And the Aki yusho was actually the second consecutive big score; Nagoya already saw Joputosu in a jun-yusho spot as well. Truly a player on the rise! Anyway, here's the banzuke. As always when scores had to be adjusted, the version shown upfront only has the numbers that were used in its actual making, while the less readable one under the spoiler tag shows the original scores as well. Asashosakari Posted November 16, 2025 Author Posted November 16, 2025 (edited) Seki-Oracle (play): Aki basho was a closely contested Oracle edition. Champion Kakushoyama prevailed by just one point over runners-up Gansekiiwa and Kirinoumi, with another five players within five points of the top score. The top ranks of this game have been hemorrhaging players over the last couple of years, and for Kyushu our sole remaining ozeki chishafuwaku will be at risk of following the others as he is kadoban after a hard-luck 7-8 score. However, even a demotion for him would not result in the rank going empty to start 2026 as I do get to announce a promotion...and one of the strongest we've seen lately: 2025.05 M3w 13-2 (3rd place) 2025.07 S2w 12-3 (5th-6th place) 2025.09 S1w 11-4 (5th-7th place) Can't argue with 36 wins and three top 5 finishes - congratulations DeRosa! He is no stranger to the ozeki rank having been there twice before, in a total of 11 tournaments. Let's hope DeRosa's renewed life as ozeki goes better than it did for the most recent two players who had earned promotion earlier this year; both lost the rank again after the minimum two tournaments. Aki basho had started with no less than five players ranked as sekiwake, but outside of DeRosa nobody came close to making a case for promotion: three finished 8-7 or 7-8, while Choshu-yuki did have a strong 4th place result and a converted 12-3, but without any support from earlier tournament scores. Her last two results were both 8-7, prior to that she was one of those two quickly-demoted ozeki. In fact, the other one is also still there at sekiwake, namely Andoreasu. The three basho since his demotion have gone 9-6 -> 14-1 Y -> 8-7, unfortunately not really enough for repromotion consideration. And I'm afraid the 8-7 (which was barely a top 20 finish in the overall field) has just about completely reset his run back to zero; only a result similar to the Nagoya yusho might still salvage it. Five sekiwake in Aki, but also five for Kyushu - the aforementioned two incumbents plus Flohru are joined by Aki komusubi Norizo and M2 Gansekiiwa. The komusubi rank is equally crowded, featuring two holdovers, two players promoted from maegashira (including the yusho winner) and a lucky makekoshi sekiwake. So, 12 sanyaku spots to close out the year (after 11 in September), and to my own surprise that turned out to be the first Oracle banzuke with 12 sanyaku since all the way back in Aki 2023. We've come a long way (going in the wrong direction...) from when we had as many as 7 Y/O and only a small handful of S/K spots were regularly up for grabs. The makuuchi <-> juryo exchanges proved very troublesome this time as nobody in the bottom six maegashira ranks scored worse than 7-8, with only two of the 7-8's in what would normally be considered "demotion range", while six juryo rikishi technically posted strong enough records to merit promoting. However, there was a massive gap in performance between the two ranking sections, such that e.g. a 9-6 in juryo was achieved with the same scores that were only worth a 7-8 in low makuuchi. I took that into account and thus only promoted four players to makuuchi who had absolute slam-dunk cases in rank/record terms. If you're scoring along at home, that means that two maegashira players were unreasonably demoted and two unlucky competitors from juryo got stuck there. All in all, basically everyone who's ranked M14 to J8 on the new banzuke has had to be treated harshly. chishafuwaku (Oe 7-8) O DeRosa (S1w 11-4) Choshu-yuki (S3w 12-3) S1 Norizo (K1e 11-4) Gansekiiwa (M2w 13-2) S2 Andoreasu (S1e 8-7) Flohru (S2w 8-7) S3 - Beeftank (K2e 9-6) K1 Wamahada (K2w 8-7) Pandaazuma (M2e 10-5) K2 Hisui (S2e 7-8) - K3 Kakushoyama (M9w 11-4 Y) ScreechingOwl (K1w 7-8) M1 Torafujii (M5w 9-6) Ganzohnesushi (M3w 8-7) M2 Bunbukuchagama (M1e 7-8) Yarimotsu (K3e 6-9) M3 joaoiyama (M3e 7-8) Kishikaisei (M1w 6-9) M4 Balon (M8w 9-6) Kirinoumi (M16e 11-4) M5 Shatsume (M5e 7-8) Asapedroryu (M10e 9-6) M6 Mariohana (M8e 8-7) Pitinosato (M6e kosho) M7 Asashosakari (M4e 6-9) Frinkanohana (M11e 9-6) M8 Kobashi (M9e 8-7) Kitakachiyama (M7e 7-8) M9 BlackPinkMawashi (M11w 8-7) Bill (M7w 7-8) M10 Oortael (M6w 6-9) GONZABUROW (M4w 4-11) M11 Oskahanada (M14w 8-7) Metzinowaka (M12e kosho) M12 Tyerenex (J2e 11-4) Susanoo (M12w 7-8) M13 Papayasu (M10w 6-9) Warusaru (J1w 10-5) M14 Andrasoyama (M13e 7-8) Panic!attheDohyo (J6e 12-3) M15 TochiYESshin (J1e 9-6) Kotononami (M13w 7-8) J1 Athenayama (M14e 7-8) Holleshoryu (J2w 9-6) J2 Hakumadashi (J8w 12-3) Oshirokita (M15e 7-8) J3 Kachikoshi (M15w 7-8) Unkonoyama (J5e 9-6) J4 Kaiowaka (J11e 12-3) Kaito (J12e 12-3) J5 Hakase (J7e 9-6) Sukubidubidu (J3e kosho) J6 Ruziklao (J4e kosho) Joputosu (J3w 7-8) J7 Fujisan (J5w 7-8) ballerscuba (J6w 7-8) J8 Rikioi (J4w 6-9) Multimikstar (J9e 7-8) J9 Gusoyama (J8e 6-9) Terukaze (Ms1e 8-7) J10 Asashoyu (NR 10-5) lonewolf (J7w 4-11) J11 Kasamatsuri (J14e 7-8) Fia (NR 9-6) J12 Saruyama (J12w kosho) Anjoboshi (J10w 5-10) J13 Takanorappa (J13w kosho) Profomisakari (J9w 4-11) J14 Hagetaka (NR 8-7) Doreikishi (J13e 5-10) Ms1 tetsuarashi (Ms4w 7-8) Hakunojo (Ms2e kosho) Ms2 glacier (Ms2w kosho) Aisukurimu (Ms3e kosho) Ms3 Terarno (J10e 3-12) Andonishiki (J11w 3-12) Ms4 reeeen (Ms3w 4-11) Umihiyama (Ms4e 2-13) Ms5 WAKATAKE (Ms5e 2-13) Sakura (J14w 0-0-15*) Ms6 Kajiyanosho (Ms1w 0-0-15) Edited November 16, 2025 by Asashosakari 1
