Well, looks like Toshunryu's combative fighting style caught up to him. That looked and sounded awful.

The ankle??? I wasn't expecting that. I thought he had crushed his knee because he had get his right leg stuck. Hope it's the mildest of injuries it can be, because it looked really bad. I think he can consider himself "lucky" if he gets a 2 basho absence (and I mean with the injury getting completely healed, which sadly it's not the sumo way usually).

(Nikkan follow-up) Confirmed as a bone fracture in the mentioned area, along with some internal bleeding. He's headed back to Tokyo for further examinations.

Sorry so late, only just got home after an unexpected Sunday journey. Ahead of Day 9, two rikishi return to the basho but five more have to withdraw.

Returning:

Ms30e Kaisho (withdrew Day 7) - Asakayama-beya simply reported poor health (体調不良) as the reason for his brief absence.

Jd8e Shinyashiki (withdrew Day 5)

Withdrawing:

Ms20e Toshunryu - as mentioned above, he suffered an ankle/foot injury in his previous bout and has returned to Tokyo.

Ms41e Oyamatoumi

Jd46w Nishikio (fusenpai Day 8)

Jd96e Takatairiku (fusenpai Day 7)

Jk13w Higonoryu (fusenpai Day 7)

Meisei is back, but what for? His demotion is already sealed.

I guess Tatsunami wants to be able to praise him for his resilience etc. at the senshuraku party?

Ahead of Day 11, one rikishi begins his basho and one returns after a brief absence, but four others have to withdraw.

Entering/Returning:

Sd40w Tsugaruumi

Jd96e Takatairiku (fusenpai Day 7, withdrew Day 9)

Withdrawing:

Sd4w Hamayutaka (fusenpai Day 10) - he hurt his left knee when he was pushed from the dohyo in his last bout, although he managed to hobble away. Tokitsukaze-oyakata (former Maegashira Tosayutaka) says he went to the  hospital for scans, the results of which will decide whether he can return for one more bout in the last round.

Sd34w Senshoho

Sd42w Daigoyama (fusenpai Day 10) - he was carrying his left arm very gingerly after a kotenage during his last bout.

Sd64w Shoran - I replayed his last bout a few times and still couldn't work out what he actually injured, but as mentioned above he had to leave on the stretcher and later went to the hospital, where Hanaregoma-beya reports he was diagnosed with a neck sprain (首の捻挫).

He gave an answer to your question today  ;-)

If he feels steady and like he's better off kicking away a bit of rust, then this might be useful regardless of outcome. Without a public statement, we don't know.

But if he's just coming back to try and get a couple wins, and there's a legit chance of aggravating whatever kept him out this long, either he's an idiot or whoever's advising him is.

I thought I remembered it was back surgery, and Wikipedia confirms:

Meisei withdrew ahead of the November 2025 tournament, with his medical certificate revealing that he underwent surgery the previous month for a disc herniation. Stablemaster Tatsunami (former sekiwake Asahiyutaka) said that Meisei underwent surgery due to worsening back pain. He left open the possibility that Meisei could join the tournament midway, adding: "We won't push him too hard."

Shiden dohyo-side is not getting up. Looks like a leg injury. Wheelchair exit.

Any updates on his condition yet? If he has to sit out, I'm afraid it's Makushita for him (Sadgoodbyes...)

He injured his left knee when he lost to Kayou. Unable to move below the dohyo he was forced to go up the hanamichi in a wheelchair. When he put pressure on his already injured left knee, his knee turned inward. . After receiving treatment at the infirmary, he got into a car with the help of Izutsu Oyakata (former makuuchi  Akiseyama), leaning on his shoulder, and headed to a hospital. Izutsu expressed concern, saying, "It's hard to say anything until he gets examined at the hospital." After day 11, Shiden is 5-6. If he were to withdraw, he would fall back to makushita next tournament.

(Nikkan) Shiden medical certificate: strained left thigh muscle, 3 weeks. Less bad than it looked, I guess. According to Kise-oyakata, Shiden will not be trying to re-enter the tournament.

It was reported that his knee got bent the wrong way, how is it possible?
