You know the drill...the official absence list only has the kyujo sekitori right now, the rest will follow there in 12 hours or so but here it is as implied by the Fanclub-published Day 1 and 2 torikumi. (You will need a free account to view them yourself if you don't have one already.) For rikishi who aren't newly absent for Kyushu basho it is noted how long they've been out of action.

M18e Meisei (Tatsunami)

Ms13w Narutaki (Isenoumi)
Ms18e Tanji (Arashio)
Ms48w Nabatame (Futagoyama) - start of Nagoya Basho
Ms49w Gyotoku (Tamanoi) - Aki Basho Day 4
Ms53e Kaishin (Tagonoura)

Sd5w Kobayashi (Kasugano) - start of Aki Basho
Sd25w Kaishinmaru (Asakayama)
Sd40w Tsugaruumi (Tamanoi)
Sd75w Kyoda (Futagoyama)

Jd2w Kojikara (Tagonoura) - start of Aki Basho
Jd10e Kiryuko (Tatsunami) - Haru Basho Day 7
Jd13w Fujiizumi (Nishikido) - start of Nagoya Basho
Jd15w Asahabataki (Takasago)
Jd43w Aron (Nakamura) - start of Nagoya Basho
Jd60e Takano (Kise)
Jd73w Suzaki (Otake) - start of Natsu Basho
Jd89e Hayashiryu (Nishonoseki) - Nagoya Basho Day 13

Jk1w Toramusashi (Musashigawa) - start of Nagoya Basho
Jk10w Chiyoryusei (Kokonoe) - Aki Basho Day 3
Jk12w Sadanojo (Sakaigawa)
Jk16e Kyokuhayate (Oshima) - one bout at the end of Aki, otherwise absent since Natsu Basho Day 11
Jk19e Aoifuji (Isegahama) - start of Aki Basho
Jk22e Higohikari (Kise) - Aki Basho Day 5

That's 23 24 confirmed absences. In addition, one or both of Jk22e Higohikari (Kise, hasn't competed past Day 4 in the last three tournaments) and Jk22w Minatoryu (Minato) is/are also absent; neither has a scheduled match so somebody's missing here, but it's impossible to tell who right now. Higohikari is out, Minatoryu is in. List adjusted.

Finally, among the Kyushu-ranked rikishi recently intaied Endo also won't be in the tournament, of course.

Meisei injury: The Kyokai released the medical certificate for M18E Meisei who will be kyujo from shonichi. He was examined at a hospital in Adachi Ward, Tokyo, and the certificate, dated the 6th, stated, "He has a lumbar disc herniation. As a result of the above diagnosis, he underwent surgery on October 17th, 2025 and will require approximately one month of rehabilitation following the surgery." Unless he can get a kachikoshi if he enters mid-basho, he will be demoted to Juryo for next basho. This will be the second time the former Sekiwake has been kyujo, since the 2020 Hatsu basho.

According to good old Google AI

"you can expect to resume light activities in about two weeks, routine activities in six weeks, and strenuous activities or contact sports around 12 weeks after surgery"

I hope Meisei doesn't rush things... but this is sumo.

"He may enter later and has been training with the lower rankers at the heya, " said Tatsunami Oyakata about Meisei. Tatsunami revealed Meisei's stress, saying, "He is the one suffering the most. The pain was so unbearable that he decided to have surgery. He probably didn't want to go under the knife."

J3e Mita suffered an injury to his right knee in his loss against Kagayaki on Day 2. He left the arena on a stretcher covering his face with his hands, although he was later seen able to walk to a nearby car which took him to a local hospital.

Below Juryo, three rikishi are withdrawing from the basho ahead of Day 3:

Sd20e Furuta

Jd70w Datenoumi (see below)

Jk14w Komanokuni

Datenoumi also left the arena on a stretcher after his right leg buckled in his loss on Day 2. His twin brother Datenomori accompanied him to the infirmary at the venue and said it is a recurrence of a dislocated knee which he had previously suffered in training before the Nagoya basho, which forced him to be absent from that basho. Datenoumi was later taken to hospital in an ambulance, still clad in his mawashi.

i guess he'll try to get in at the end to scratch out a win or two to make sure he doesn't drop out into makushita somehow

At this point, he's in career survival mode. He needs to hope a full miss gives him enough rest to turn things around. Taking a couple matches worth of smash can do far more harm than good.

Nikkan Sports is reporting Mita has withdrawn from the remainder of the basho and will require three months of rest. Submitted medical certificate cites damage to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

Hopefully they'll learn from Endo and treat it properly, but I'm not holding my breath.

According to the Japanese Wikipedia page for Mita, it was his left knee with the ACL tear in University, and that's the one he's had bandaged.  If it's the right knee injured here, this is a new injury, and tougher to rehab if there's any residual issues with the left knee [and there ~always are].

This sounds a bit like the Terunofuji problem. If you have one dodgy knee you consciously or unconsciously put more weight on the other one. And before you know it you have two bad knees.

That's certainly possible.  Of course, he could have simply had a trauma to the right knee.  I'm sure the story will come out eventually.

Yeah, his knee absolutely buckled trying to resist Kagayaki's push. If the left knee caused any sort of unconscious shift, it was likely getting him to push Kagayaki to his right as a way of trying to stay upright.

I really feel for Mita. Such an earnest and dedicated guy, absolutely horrible luck to end up with such a serious injury. He was soon going to be Futagoyama's second makuuchi rikishi too. I really hope he will heal up properly and try to come back but I fully understand if he just wants to quit.

Is there any info on Tanji? I haven't seen the stated reason for his absence. But people are worried because his brother quit not too long ago and people are worried about Tanji

Ahead of Day 5, one rikishi begins his basho but four others have to withdraw.

Entering:

Jd15w Asahabataki

Withdrawing:

Sd8e Sengaku - offered no resistance in his last bout, must be dealing with an existing injury coming into the basho.

Sd43e Koseiryu - I haven't seen his last bout but from what I read online he was taken away in the wheelchair with some kind of leg injury.

Jd8e Shinyashiki (fusenpai Day 3)

Jd16e Asatenmai - seemed unsteady on his feet after his last bout, an energetic loss to much younger Goseimaru on Day 3.
