I imagine it would make the first week a lot more interesting since everyone would have to figure out the aite on his own instead of just copying whatever Jakusotsu guessed. A lot of the appeal of this game (which started off as semi-tongue-in-cheek) is the chat. This would be lost with a secret picking system - and would be a pain to administer, I think....? What will potentially change things during the first week is adding guys to the san'yaku. The scheduling committee has gotten away from making random-looking decisions, which means we can largely lean on the last basho (or two or whatever) if the san'yaku is the same size. But when the size of the san'yaku changes, it's much more likely they change something up from the last time it was that size. Maybe they shouldn't, but it happens.
