Quite suddenly, Kataonami-beya's website reported Tamatensho's intai as part of today's score updates. Huh.

Nikkan wrote an article about this unexpected retirement. The shisho (former Sekiwake Tamakasuga) said over the phone that Tamatensho has found what he wants to do next, and that they respect his decision. A danpatsu-shiki will take place at the heya's senshuraku party.

Heyagashira Tamawashi, for whom Tamatensho served as tsukebito, added that Tamatensho kept trying despite suffering several shoulder dislocations in his career, and had never been discouraged or thought about giving up because of that.

Plenty of comings and goings in the lower divisions as we reach the final round of lower division action. Three rikishi return to the dohyo, three more withdraw, and one makes a late entry to keep his place on the banzuke.

Entering/Returning:

Ms43w Naya (withdrew Day 9)

Ms53w Fukai (fusenpai Day 3, withdrew Day 5)

Sd5e Kinotsukasa (fusenpai Day 10, withdrew Day 11)

Jk8e Kyokuhayate - absent since suffering an ankle injury during the Natsu basho.

Withdrawing:

Sd73e Soga (fusenpai Day 11)

Jd99e Nishikimaru (fusenpai Day 11)

Jk9e Katsunonishiki (fusenpai Day 12)

Assuming they aren't retiring, these four rikishi will drop off the banzuke for the Kyushu basho:

Jk1w Amanofuji

Jk7w Daikinryu

Jk16w Tanino

Jk22w Wakasei (not on the Nishiiwa-beya website any more so I don't think he'll be coming back)

This basho will beat Kyushu 2016 for the latest fusen among Sekitori if all show up tomorrow. It may become the first without any since Haru 2006.

Everybody wants to go to London.

While I think it's true, I doubt that is relevant. Given how much paperwork is involved (I figure a lot if not most of these people didn't even own a passport until now), I think the decision and list of who's going was made a long time ago.

According to rumors, only rikishi active on senshuraku will get to go.

Kintamayama might've been correct about Fukai. He went out today for an unnecessary bout, clearly hobbling, and won. Huge grin after bowing at the hanamichi, felt like a goodbye.

Nishikimaru has had another case of cellulitis.

Katsunonishiki had to have an incision to drain an abscess around the area of the buttocks.

...and seven minutes after the games' deadline it appears that Kotozakura is out.

Could be handing Oonosato his yusho without his mounting the dohyo. This sucks. Must be something very serious to merit a day 14 yusho-important bout being forfeited.

The Japan Sumo Association announced that Ozeki Kotozakura  will be absent from the tournament. Kotozakura was scheduled to face Yokozuna Oonosato, who is currently leading the yusho race, on this day, but Oonosato will be awarded a fusensho. With this, Oonosato's record will be 13 wins and 1 loss. Komusubi Aonishiki and Maegashira Takanoshou, both with 3 losses, have no chance of winning the yusho now. If Yokozuna Houshouryuu, with 11 wins and 2 losses, loses to Sekiwake Wakatakakage in the final bout today, Oonosato will be declared the winner on the 14th day, without waiting for the final day. In that case, it would be a rare occurrence for the yusho to be decided without a bout.

Of course, the 52 kensho banners will be cancelled as well.

Kotozakura's right knee almost buckled while pushing Hoshoryu out and  he flexed it immediately after the bout. I thought it didn't promise anything good.

It's very rare that all kensho in such a big bunch are cancelled and none are redistributed to other bouts https://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXZQOKC271HX0X20C25A9000000/

I guess the announcement came too late for redistributing, the first news appeared at 13:58h JST
