Probably a good thing for Inami that the basho is ending. He should probably rest and avoid blows to the head after Kyokukaiyu's spectacular back body drop. Took AGES to stand up.

I mean, and see the pic immediately above, you can both acknowledge that you had to rely on a high-risk move that won't work very often AND be grumpy that you didn't get the call on this occasion when it arguably did work. The latter doesn't preclude continuing to work on a better strategy going forward.

Fair enough. My perspective is more, any energy spent being grumpy is energy not being spent on finding ways to stay out of that position. Yeah, retaining some grump is logical, but not usually helpful unless you're particularly fueled by spite.

Aonishiki's career stats are a sight to behold. This guy had terrible basho of 10-5 record. Tsk tsk...

Might as well retire already.

I mean, it was in juryo. Clear scrub performance.

The shinpan department decided to hold a meeting regarding Aonishiki's promotion to ozeki on the afternoon of the final day of the tournament. Takadagawa, the head of the shinpanbu  revealed that a meeting regarding promotion would be held, but did not reveal details about the current direction, such as whether he would be promoted if he won, or whether it would be postponed if he lost the main bout on the final day, saying, "This is not something we should be talking about now."

Sounds like a win definitely gets him there... maybe a really tough loss? I don't think they want to have to make that call.

So while if all the matches were 50/50, we'd give Aonishiki a 1/4 chance to win the Yusho with Hoshoryu and Onosato having a 3/8 chance each, given the prior head-to-head results, it looks like Aonishiki might be considered the favorite.  He has a good head-to-head against Kotozakura and Hoshoryu, and Hoshoryu has a good head-to-head against Onosato.  Thus if the prior head-to-head results are good indications of future results, Aonishiki would likely win his honwari match and then likely face Hoshoryu in the play-off, which he would likely win.

Sansho Speculation:

Aonishiki probably gets another Gino-sho and a Shukun-sho if he wins the Yusho.  I don't think he'd get the Shukun-sho just for his defeat of Hoshoryu should the latter win the Yusho.

Going by what they did last tournament, one might expect they also have conditional Shukun-Sho available for Yoshinofuji and Wakamotoharu, who each beat one or more of the Yusho contenders, giving it to one of them based on who actually wins the Yusho.  This seems a bit of a stretch to have so many conditions, I might in reality expect just a Shukun-Sho for Yoshinofuji, maybe conditional on getting the tenth win.

Kirishima has previously gotten 2 sansho for 11-win tournaments since his demotion from Ozeki, but he didn't get one for his 12-win performance soon after, so I'm not sure how likely they are to throw a sansho his way.  So while he might be given one conditionally on an 11th win, I'm not really sold on that, and I don't know which of Gino-Sho and Kanto-Sho he'd be likely to get, as his two most recent were one of each.

The only other Maegashira who really might be considered for a sansho based on record alone is Ichiyamamoto, and that's a bit of a stretch as he wasn't in the Yusho race at all.  He almost certainly needs another win to be able to get one.  Tokihayate might get some love with a tenth win for technically being in the Yusho race a few days, but 10 wins for a non-debut rikishi rarely gets a sansho.

While I don't think it will happen, I really wish they'd give Fujinokawa a sansho, either Kanto-Sho or Gino-Sho, because it really feels his results are quite spectacular for someone his size and age, and he shows both great spirit and technique.

This may be one for the trivia board, but here are the top ten in the race for the most maku'uchi wins in the calendar year with one day to go:

  • 71: Onosato
  • 55: Aonishiki
  • 54: Hoshoryu, Kirishima
  • 50: Takayasu, Wakatakakage
  • 48: Oho, Tamawashi, Hakuoho
  • 47: Tokihayate (yes, really)

They could just follow their own custom and promote him since he's at 33 wins over 3 basho now, and gilded the Lilly with at least one and probably two jun-yusho, if not a proper (if unlikely) yusho this basho. The oyakata probably worded the statement that way to leave some doubt because I do  believe it's pretty rare for such announcements to be made until after the basho.

Terunofuji on NHK immediately suggested that Onosato has some injury.

Back in the old days of the late 2000's, when yaocho was apparently rampant, but only in Juryo, mind you, I seem to remember they would call out some makuuchi guy every other basho for doing mukiryoku sumo. Now they're playing the "injury" card instantly when their most prominent rikishi does what he did today. Cool.

The NSK was informed that it is planned that PM special advisor Inoue 井上貴博 (63 like me, but looks strong enough to lift the cup - with help) will hand over the PM cup on the dohyo tomorrow

202511220001551-w200_1.jpgo

Order of countries like last year, after NHK (the gold cup is presented in Kyushu, in the past after the countries, last year like this time), with 1 addition: UAE, Mongolia, Czechia, Thailand, Italy (new in), Hungary, France, Mexico - no friendship cup from China and no Bulgarian cup at regional basho.

Shoutout to Hatsuyama for reaching 50 in Juryo this year. First to do that since Daishoho in 2018.

I was surprised to find Chiyonofuji did the same back in 1977

Of note, he was under 100kg at that time...

From Nishonoseki:

“He injured the acromioclavicular joint in his left shoulder. He tried moving at keiko this morning, but after talking with him, we decided not to push it and to have him rest. We’re very sorry that he has to sit out on the final day.”

Very pleased to see this kind of caution. Nishonoseki's active career was ruined by fighting through injury, right when he had finally achieved the rank he'd always dreamed of. Glad to see he's applying more caution to his Yokozuna deshi and making sure his career can continue for the long term

Sansho have been decided

Shukun-Sho: Aonishiki conditional if he wins the yusho

Kanto-Sho: Kirishima if he wins today, Ichiyamamoto if he wins today

Gino-Sho: Aonishiki outright, Yoshinofuji outright

I was at first surprised this was out already, but then I remembered that daylight savings time ended since the last basho and so the time difference was one hour off.  I specifically started looking right after the most recent top of the hour, because that's when I thought it was going to be released.

Some random guy who looks like a high schooler who definitely is too small to ever have been a rikishi is in the picture holding up the results for some reason instead of an oyakata recently retired.  Yes I know who it is.

Onosato kyujo.

Can't see it mentioned elsewhere,

How will they manage the snake and dragon dance before the last 3 bouts?
