After 2 kinboshi in a row to Hakuoho, I was sure he won't lose a 3rd to him

Of course my goldfish memory already forgot about 2 basho ago... So that was even more motivation for Onosato.

Kingyozan (not Kinbozan) sounds good :-D

Excellent idea! I would really do that but seems like the forum username cannot be changed.

Unfortunately, the only person I know who has the powers to do that has gone missing for quite a while.

To cheer up his severely inured deshi Mita, who might think of intai, Futagoyama after 30 years had a middle/high school buzz cut again

- I'd think it reminds Mita of a danpatsushiki and does the opposite of cheering him up

A few late thoughts about day 3.

Sadanoumi unfortunately looks like his makuuchi career is finished if not this basho then very soon. He's been teetering on the edge for a while but to me it looks like it'll take a miracle to avoid juryo this time. And I'm not sure he can get out of juryo again.

Daieisho seems to be still recovering, otherwise he wouldn't have trouble with Fujinokawa. As much as I like the smaller guy, he'd be no match for last year's Daieisho.

Churanoumi always seems so unassuming to me and I tend to underestimate his ability, but as we're seeing this basho he can actually do some solid sumo. Nice to see the Okinawa man starting well.

For three days of full effort Midorifuji has exactly one win. I'd say that win was much deserved.

Aonishiki just keeps on being an absolute beast. I am starting to think our 11-wins monster is gonna go 12 this time and be an Ozeki next basho. Or go 11-4 and try to become Ozeki again the basho after that. But I only see him being defeated by the Yokozunae or trickery.

Fujinokawa is having the best Makuuchi basho of his short career here. He has gotten rid of the jitters and looks completely relaxed compared to his previous bashos.

Onosato looks like he is gonna win another basho. If he doesn't get hit by a lightning or fall down the stairs, he is gonna be a Dai Yokozuna in a few years.

Stuff from today.

Tamanoi oyakata was supposed to do the NHK broadcast today but lost his voice and went kyujo. Ex-Kotokaze subbed for him.

Makushita Kazuma the new beast in town got his mage today for the first time. And it was his 24th birthday. He will be a ruler soon.

"I beat the gyoji by oshidashi so it should have been a tie,"said Ichiyamamoto who lost his bout but oshidashi'd the gyoji in the process.

Watching the Nishikifuji-Chiyoshoma match live, on the winning throw I thought Nishikifuji's grip was on Chiyoshoma's "kintas". I guess this would be a hansoku if it had actually happened (actually a thigh grab). But if not hansoku, would it be termed a "kintamanage"? Enquiring minds would like to know :-}

While watching his matches I can't help but think "next Mitoryū". But I hope to be proven wrong.

Different trajectory.  Mitoryuu started at Makushita Tsukedashi 15 and it took him 5 bashos to make it to Juryo. Kazuma, after the injury, is making it to Juryo in 5 bashos. Maybe 6 if he doesn't yusho this basho. From Jonokuchi. If it weren't for that injury in his first basho, he would be a sekitori by now, probably in Makuuchi.

But we shall see..

Oshoma...that well-timed slap caught Shodai completely by surprise and besides ringing his chimes  put him away for good.

Posted (edited)

So that's what happened, I totally missed that slap and was wondering how come Shodai just gave up from an advantageous position. In fact knowing Shodai these years, not even wondering that much, just accepting.

Onosato was clearly dissatisfied with his pulldown today. I suppose it was an automatic reaction but his face said "Yeah I got the win but that's not yokozuna sumo".

Mitakeumi today was on the receiving end of exactly the kind of rush attack that Kintamayama's blast from the past showed Mitakeumi himself doing 10 years ago, mage-less. It's been a long time since he last did sumo like that consistently...

Fujinokawa is a man on a mission with total self-belief and not a tiny bit intimidated by Shishi's size either. Last basho he found it much more difficult higher up in makuuchi but seems like he's used that as motivation to start even better just 3 ranks down. I'm looking forward to more of his sumo this basho.

Is Kotoshoho starting another sneak attempt at the yusho? Onosato, Hoshoryu and Aonishiki would probably say no way, but we already had that happen once...

Wonderful sotogake by Tobizaru, dropping Kinbozan down very smoothly. And Churanoumi's 2-in-1 okuridashi was quite funny, although it seemed the gyoji hindered Ichiyamamoto a bit already before stepping out. Not that the result would've been much different.

Yup, a clear winning move. Even if Shodai wasn't momentarily stunned, he was utterly discombobulated. Actually made me laugh.
I hope it was a calculated move, based Shodai always trying to keep his face out of the fight.

I've very much appreciated Oshoumi and Asahakuryu giving us a classic yotsu match to start makunouchi off today.

Tomorrow's highlight match is in Makushita - Kozmo (Kazuma) faces Enhou! Should be fun to watch. 93 kilos weight difference, 18 centimeter height difference. Former Makuuchi idol, next Makuuchi beast, who needs a 7-0 yusho to become sekitori next basho..

Tohakuryu would surely have lost by hansoku if he wasn't pushed out first, right?

This should just be instated as a rule, period.
Funnily enough, your post being immediately below ex-Miyabiyama's short haircut, I thought you were going for the joke of: Tohakuryu could manage to pull his hair even with that haircut.

We don't need any more of that crap. That's enough proper yotsu until 2027 for all those lame yotsu-aficionados. Now we need more Tomokaze and Kayo and Kotokuzan...

Aonishiki paid apprentice fee today. And dearly.

At least he took it like a man.  That's a good sign; he'll learn. (Beaten...)
