Yeah 56 could well take it. I think I'm at 52 and not complaining given the utter incompetence of this iteration of the banzuke committee. As @Asashosakari said a little while ago, there's a difference between exercising discretion and ignoring the results of the basho.

Hard to decide what their worst decision was, but Churanoumi ahead of Shodai, when the latter was a full rank ahead by the math, they were only 3 ranks apart, and there are no conceivable joi considerations, is up there.

And of course keeping a 6-9 komusubi at the rank bucks the entire modern history of banzuke creation.

49, in large part thanks to an annoyingly large amount of West guesses that ended up East on the next rank (6). Not that I have much standing to complain; there's only one corresponding East->West miss (Takerufuji and Meisei) where the outcome could be called unlucky or a coin flip gone wrong, all the other West->East misses were caused by somebody going much higher than expected.

This is one of those times where I'm glad I have an outlet besides typing on a forum, because fk me, I'd burn out my keyboard.

Results are in. Yusho winner, first time, is Blaise in his third basho. We even have two newbies in the top ten. Five of the top ten have played for three bashos max. 61 points were enough for the  yusho, with Takayasu's rank causing havoc. 64 new players.

- Takayasu: 6-9 stays at Komusubi, first time ever
- Gonoyama gets a 2 rank 'joi-bias' over Tobizaru, but Takerufuji (who one could argue had a stronger scheduele), loses the tiebreaker with Meisei (who's highest opponent was M6)
- Chiyoshoma get a 1.5-2 rank 'joi-bias?' despite facing only 1 sanyaku. Did they realize they screwed him over last time and this is 'making up' for it?
- Kusano and Fujinokawa both ending up at M14. Guess being 4 ranks and 1 win ahead doesn't matter because Juryo rikishi aren't really 'people'?

I'm sticking with Churanoumi ahead of Shodai: two guys in a similar part of the banzuke, Churanoumi was 3 ranks higher but finished with 2 fewer wins so should have been a full rank behind Shodai, no possible joi bias or any other logical reason to flip them...

This one was exactly what I guessed. I think we have to stop thinking that "the math" works across the division boundary, which is fair enough, because the fight cards in makuuchi vs juryo are completely different.

That is true, but if Kusano ended 10-5 would he not have landed at the same spot? Those 3 extra wins effectively meant nothing. There does appear to be a precedent for trying to 'space out' the Juryo promotees if there is substantial difference between their rank/record combos. Hatsu 2024 for example. Was there any particular reason to overdemote Onosho other than to create some distance between Kotoshoho and Onosato?

EDIT: Fun GTB fact, this is the first time in 15 years that, among the top 10, the best record was 11-4.

Well I knew they'd pull some silly stuff from convention's perspective, so I tried being consistent in a different way than I had considered much before because I thought I saw a pattern. This was definitely not a pattern they repeated this time around. I suppose next time I'll try to theorise something entirely different again.

To be honest I don't really mind whether I KK or not in GTB - I want a perfect guess. Aiming for a high score, not an average. But I think that'll be very difficult under the current decision makers.

Exactly. Juryo records only matter as a way to determine their holders' positions relative to each other, nothing more.

There is way more chaos at play in this game than many of us realize.

How the hell did I manage to get a 12-3 with that deliberately weird guess? I kept Ryuden, knowing it was impossible and only promoted 4 from juryo, but apparently the juryo guys really don't matter much. Takayasu/Aonishiki wrong of course - I looked from the bottom, sure to find myself in the lower half and then at 28 of 334. Quite a number of players again - the game has reached a new level this year.

Goshobiyama (Ryan from Grand Sumo Breakdown) caught a 7-8 record on this one which means his KachiKoshi streak is over. It was the longest active one in the game and he stopped short of getting the record. Very sad.

This was also a sad basho for the GSB heya of guessers as a whole as our club no longer is represented at rank 1. Between Goshobiyama and Asset a member of our club chat held the top spot for a long time, but it has been surrendered to Duden who is a stranger to us. Overall I'm still happy to see lots of people from our chat in the high ranks. 5 of the top 10 ranks are held by our people which is still very cool.

I myself also had my best Basho so far, doing less bad than many in a terrible banzuke. Got 18th and shot up to rank 56 overall. Yay! Nanikitanohito surging!

I think it's pretty much an unwritten rule that 6-9 drops you out of sanyaku, no matter what warm body they have to pull up to fill the slots.

I am not very good at it this time, again, damned be the person who invented this game. Every now and then, I have something I'm absolutely sure about. I do not use queries and don't want to know of any precedents. I just go with what I think is right, hence my terrible performances. Sometimes I just know and talk about it and it happens, as in the past with some obscure guesses  I made and was ridiculed, but then it happened. The only thing I was sure of this time (except the Y/O placements of course) was Takayasu at KW. Then I got to see your various guesses, all of them with Takayasu at Maegashira, relying on the past and all and felt like an idiot and was lectured at length of it never happening ever etc.. etc... My thinking was no way a guy in his second basho in Makuuchi going 11-4 at M9 will be promoted to Komusubi, regardless of race, creed or favorite sushi place. No comparison to Oonosato being fresh too but getting back to back yushos at the highest level of combat, be the current level as it may. As I pointed out, all this to no avail as my 5-10 record will show. But I must admit a certain smugness is there, overshadowing the MK sadness..
