Sasanishiki Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Absent as of Day 6. I guess it is the knee that has been bothering him. Kotomitsuki gets the free ride. One less top rank opponent for Kaio to face.
Jonosuke Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Apparently he injured his left shoulder during Kokkai bout on Day 2. He has been getting a painkiller shot since then. This will mean he will be demoted from Ozeki again. This is Tochiazuma's 13th kyujo and Kotomitsuki will get a Fusensho. "The injury has been so painful that he could hardly breathe and even a painkiller shot is not effective. At this moment I am not even sure if he can come back the next basho ," Tamanoii oyakata, his shisho and father, said.

This guy gets no breaks when it comes to injuries (Blowing up furiously...)
Guest MGLSekitori Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 (edited) Does that mean we'll have only one Ozeki come January? If U gets promoted to Yokozuna. Edited November 19, 2004 by MGLSekitori
Kaihayaiha Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Yes, but one of the yokozunas would be listed on the banzuke as a yokozuna-ozeki.
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 It was strangely quiet everywhere about his shoulder after day 2 even though it looked devastating when he fell on it and did that ultimate "Oh no...shoulder!" gesture language. I think this is the last straw that broke the camel's back for Azuma. Repeated shoulder injuries is one thing but repeated very serious ones in another. The comment by oyakata that "even pain killer shot didn't help and even breathing was painful" has so eerily tone in it that it is simply sad. He may well have more breaks there and the ligaments don't need any more this. I suppose more info given soon but pessimism is realism now?
Araiwa Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Two Ozekis gone in two tournaments, and with Chiyotaikai struggeling maybe three in three tournaments...that could mean no ozeki in march (Blowing up furiously...) ! Even this group of constant ozeki (never has a group of four ozeki been there that long) can go down so fast...but maybe it is not bad for the sport if others come to the top.
Azumashida Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 maybe it is not bad for the sport if others come to the top. For the sport, no. But for ozumo, it may well be quite bad, especially if mostly gaijin guys get there. Hopefully Wakanosato will seize the opportunity first.
Mark Buckton Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Does that mean we'll have only one Ozeki come January? If U gets promoted to Yokozuna. (Clapping wildly...) (Shaking head...) :-P sorry - got me that one. U promoted to Y? :-( What is the sport coming to. That said - if he is, it can always be said how easy he had it - no competition, 2 ozekis out, third looking like ANR or Nishi could beat him blindfolded (Laughing...) and let him go into that rap / hip hop body wave thing again - and of course the no yusho necessary if bad old Shoryu won't crumble for you rule to help him along. Seriously though - yes, I guess so.

Bad day in Japan? :-) Careful, you sounded almost like Kotoseiya does about Asashoryu there for a minute. Would be a shame to see a second person have a meltdown because they don't agree with who's Yokozuna.
AsaMoe Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 :'-( After all, Tochiazuma is still young and i am quite confident, that he will come back. Btw, what happens, if he is too injured to start in the next few tournaments ? Wenn will he be forced to retire or can he come back at any time ? U promoted to Y? I dont think it is that easy. Of course with Tochiazuma out and Chiyotaikai out of form it is much easier. But provided Kaio looses to Asashoryu he has to win the next 7 matches. And if he does, i think he deserves it.
Mark Buckton Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 (edited) Bad day in Japan? :-( Careful, you sounded almost like Kotoseiya does about Asashoryu there for a minute. No-one loves me, everyone hates me, think I'll go and eat worms - no worries - no couches and self implosions for me Asa-san. (Laughing...) Bad week medically though - bronchitis and supposed broken bone in back area according to my doc. White liney / rectangle thing showing up therein. Another check tomorrow but kyujo for me this Sunday. (Shaking head...) Should really put this in the Amasumu bit I guess. (Clapping wildly...) Edited November 19, 2004 by Adachinoryu
Zeokage Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Tochiazuma could come back at any time if he doesn't retire, but it won't be as an Ozeki.
Mark Buckton Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Telling it like it is.. (Clapping wildly...) I know that door (Shaking head...) Thanks for the pic though Kinta-san. Heard this kyujo thing in the hospital waiting room (they know how to make you wait here) after persuading the staff to switch from some kak cooking show to NHK - main argument - more men in the waiting room than women. Don't ask - don't get. Took a brief 'staff consensus' though. (Laughing...)

Go back a ways and you'll see (as you already know) that a good majority of recent Yokozuna made it up to the top with a much of their top competition out for the Basho where they finally made it...

Mark Buckton Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 third looking like ANR or Nishi could beat him blindfolded Is this sarcastic (always hard to tell online)? most of it - except the bit about me and Nishi. That's true.
AsaMoe Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Tochiazuma could come back at any time if he doesn't retire, but it won't be as an Ozeki. I mean, how fast will he go down ? If he does not fight, when will he be in Juryu ? Or is it possible that they allow him to start as M17 or something like this ?

Hatsu: Sekiwake Haru: Mid-Makunouchi (M05-M10) Natsu: Upper Juryo (J01-J06) Nagoya: Bottom Juryo or more likely upper Makushita (J13-Ms05) Aki: Mid-to Lower Makushita I suspect he will have retired before it comes to that though (Hugging...)
Mark Buckton Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 Azuma will not go below sekiwake easily and below upper maegashira and intai is the word. He has a stable to inherit so pride is up there now and will keep him there. Possible chance on Yoshiazuma but not that hot a bet. Shibs and Takaazuma are the hopes for the future as well as a couple of newer lads. Move into a new building on Dec 18 (probably biggest and best stable to date) IIRC does Tamanoi and Azuma will have to work towards supporting that - even with the income generated by 25 (is it?) rikishi.

Gusoyama Posted November 19, 2004 Posted November 19, 2004 So, if Azuma can't answer the bell in January, an intai is likely? Or are they talking intai after THIS basho?
