the shitaku-beya: makuuchi, juryo

A big arena, but not enough space for a full shitaku-beya: both east and west preparation rooms are divided  into makuuchi and juryo. Makushita and below can use each. A sandanme in the smallest west shitaku-beya commented: "Like at a jungyo"

The Kuramae kokugikan had it like that, but no other venue now https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2025/07/13/0019222668.shtml

The first NHK winner interview in the new arena was with Kusano. Hopefully there will be several more with him this basho. This was for his first new makuuchi win.

Abi has an excuse for the henka: recent surgery - at the left elbow after last basho. He couldn't do much training.

Aonishiki making waves!

It's good to be back. For some reason the break between Natsu and this one felt longer than usual.

Man, Kotozakura got completely outskilled. That is some terrific technique by Aonishiki.

I see a shadow of old Shodai in Aonishiki ( as Shodai made it to Sanyaku without makekoshi, and I see Aonishiki doing the same), aside from Aonishiki being a much more technique oriented Rikishi than Shodai.

Onosato was a bit jumpy, but still looking really strong. Glad to see that he is locked in despite all the partying that must've occurred.

Hoshoryu had the best match of the day and he is looking vicious this basho. He wants the Yusho and show he is the dominant Yokozuna.

Next Ozeki Aonishiki? Let's not jinx him.

Yet more Aonishiki reaction. I was thinking "I don't know what's going on with his left arm flopping around like that but it can't be a good thing. KZ is going to squash him down".

Five seconds later: "Oh, now I get it. You clever beggar".

Aonishiki becomes the first maku'uchi wrestler to win two bouts by uchimuso in a calendar year since Kotomitsuki in 2008.

And he now has 2 out of the only 3 in the last decade!

Don't know what the gyoji was thinking in the Hiradoumi-Tamawashi bout. Tamawashi was watching his opponent all the way and clearly only put his foot out once he was sure Hiradoumi had touched down. He must have been baffled when the gyoji pointed the gunbai the other way. Never any doubt that was going to be overturned.

....not that he needs an excuse to do one.

So I expect a "reasonable reason" for every Abi henka from now on, thank you.

All prepared for injury: a wheelchair (made in Germany) able to sustain a 300kg rikishi was presented today, with the heaviest at the moment, Dewanojo (252kg)

I would have gone for twin rear wheels, like on a Euro truck. I can hear the tyres crying for mercy :-D

No-one knows how to move it yet when loaded.

Many matches today should at least have gone to monoii

Dunno about many but weird the Asakoryu one didn't. I think this may be the first time (I started following this year) I feel like the wrong decision was taken.

It's like your first beer -- not sure what to make of things, a little disappointed.  Don't worry, you've got years and years of experience ahead of you!

My happiness for Wakamotoharu getting a kinboshi was strongly augmented by schadenfreude at Hoshoryu's inability to back up the cocky attitude.

Such a contrast to the other side of the banzuke where Onosato looks like he's overcoming an understandable battle with impostor syndrome. That's one kinboshi Aonishiki isn't getting this time, as he rapidly discovered.

Wonderful bit of Ura magic today, too. For the newcomers, he used to be a gymnast.

2 sashi-chigae for Kandayu in a row in a Tamawashi bout. That won't look good on his record and could delay his future promotions.

It won't, but will it? Do we western fans attach a stigma to sashi-chigae that no longer exists?

I mean, I know the tate-gyoji's wazashi signifies his readiness to commit seppuku if he gets it wrong, but they don't, do they? I've no idea when the last one did that, if they ever did.
The Kyokai always reject the ritual letter of resignation, too.

Maybe I've missed something, but the only thing that seems to interrupt the strict order of seniority gyoji promotions is off-dohyo wrongdoings or leaving in a somewhat premature huff. They leave the promotion queue, but I don't recall one being sent backwards in the queue.

Not interrupt, delay - like the last Shonosuke had to wait an extra year or so till he got promoted
