I am truly flabbergasted that you have only just noticed!
It has been noted and discussed hereabouts for what feels like ages - 2-3yrs, I think.

It all must have gone right over my head (pardon the poor pun).

I hope he would at least get a date with Kirishima on senshuraku. Getting to sanyaku after a schedule with 0 sanyaku opponents would feel rather... cheap. His highest-ranked opponent so far was Ura. (Sigh...)

That's bugging me, too. He needed to fight a little higher up this basho if anyone can entertain him being in sanyaku. You gotta fight sanyaku to prove you are sanyaku worthy in my books.

Watching Takarafuji in juryo this time has been a sad experience. He is getting overpowered by guys who wouldn't have moved him back an inch when he was in his prime. Does he want to keep going from the scruffy end of juryo street in July?

I hope he comes back strong next basho and starts fighting his way back up, but if not it may be time to hang up the belt by the end of the year. That'll be sad. He's great but at least we still have Tamawashi inspiring old guys like me.

When you need a komusubi, you need a komusubi ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Is it just my imagination or does ex-Aminishiki suddenly have a LOT more hair than he had as an active rikishi?

Oh, he GREW a lot of hair since his retirement.

A Kusano juryo yusho tomorrow could mark the first time since 2014 that the two same wrestlers have won the top 2 division titles consecutively.

In 2014 Hakuho won the makuuchi titles, while Tochinoshin won the juryo titles.

Other such occurrences

- 1978 Kitanoumi in makuuchi and Washuyama in juryo
- 1970 Kitanofuji in makuuchi and Kongo in juryo

Is there any (semi)official info regarding expected sansho?

They normally post on X once they've finished with the votes

Don't forget Sadanoumi!

We also have Sadanoumi winning a kanto-sho at 38, and Hidenoumi winning promotion to maku'uchi at 35.

It's too bad for Hosh that he has 15 opponents during a basho rather than just Onosato.

You can petition NSK for a change in basho format. I am sure they will be happy to accommodate you. (Laughing...)

Hoshoryu has a 6-2 record against Onosato, and one of those loses is a fusen. It would be funny if this becomes a thing.

It will be funny if Onosato continues to collect yushos despite their H2H record. :-D

He just need to clone Onosato 14 times.

It seems that wrestlers who have already locked up the yusho tend to lose motivation and drop matches at the end, so Hoshoryu should continue getting Onosato at opportune times.

Oof Hosh just made a statement. Well done to both!

A nice set-up to give him a little hope for a future yusho...

What an extremely satisfying basho! We've got a proper back-to-back yusho winner in Onosato with a PB 14-1, and Hoshoryu acquitted himself really well after the shaky start. 12-3 is not to be sniffed at - it earned him his rope! He also showed, weird as it sounds, that our new yokozuna is actually still a little green. He tried and failed to keep Hoshoryu off his mawashi, simple as that.

I'm very pleased to see Wakatakakage back in form. I'm not saying it'll never happen, but I don't expect him to put up the numbers for ozeki promotion. There's nothing wrong with being a damn fine sekiwake, IMO.

Aonishiki certainly looks like a prime prospect for better things, but the same can't currently be said of Takerufuji or Hakuoho.

I don’t understand why so many are dismissing Hoshoryu.

Sure, Onosato looks like the dominant force of this generation, but a 12-3 Jun-Yusho is hardly something a yokozuna should be ashamed of.

Yes, two early kinboshi aren't ideal—but at the end of the day, history will remember a 12-3 JY, not the stumble in week one. Let’s put the pitchforks down.

Side note: I was surprised how happy I was to see Hoshoryu win today. This rivalry is shaping up to be something special—I’m really looking forward to it.

Let's just say he'll be the Kakuryu to Onosato's Hakuho.

I still say it's looking like Hakuho/Harumafuji II
