In lower divisions, they cannot draw lines because other bouts are happening while the rikishi of the interrupted bout are recovering. After a couple of bouts, they resume with another tachiai.

Terunofuji best mongolian yokozuna ever, ergo bestest yokozuna of them all. Very poor first performance by the Khans, didn't quite remember that.

Feel bad for Hoshoryu as many of us were saying it was a promotion too early, forced by the retirement of Terunofuji instead of letting things play out another basho, which could have (and would have based on these results, dismantled the rope run). 

It's not Hoshoryu's fault, but it now puts his career trajectory in a dangerous path (at only age 25) if he is unable to find the consistency required to uphold the honor of the rank. It may only get harder as Onosato, Takerufuji, and other up and comers round into form.

Hearing now that he may be kyujo?

"No matter what happens I won't go kyujo. Even if I'm losing I won't go kyujo. My job is to do sumo," he had said prior to the basho when the banzuke was announced.

Predicting Tatsunami oyakata will claim responsibility and the media heat for the kyujo; that's what he's there for in theory. Tokiwayama did the same for Takakeisho and his willingness to do so probably helped him last as long as he did.

Not much interest now in Hoshoryu on national TV: usually the kyujo of a yokozuna is in the NHK news at noon, Hoshoryu's bout wasn't even in the main news 7 yesterday: top Kotozakura, 2nd Onosato.

He is Hoshoryu the Unready, for sure. He's not been a dominant rikishi and is unlikely to become one.
But he's only 25, so he ought to be able to improve somewhat.

I'm bloody annoyed with Onosato losing to Takayasu. I know there are forum members who will be thrilled if the former ozeki can get a yusho, but it feels pointless to me.

I'm far away from being thrilled, but when even such  a "great" Ozeki like Shodai has a Yusho under his belt I would be happy for Takayasu to win. Onosato will win enough tournaments in near future. But to be honest, I don't think Takayasu will win. As always he will lose his head on the final stretch.

I still want to see a Takayasu yusho, but mostly at this point, I'm wondering exactly how and when he's going to choke. The fact that he's already faced all the Y/O at this point feels like it makes a choke more likely, rather than less.

Also, a 13-2J still puts Onosato on a tsuna run, which is the main thing. (As would a 13-2Y, of course.)

Takayasu! I haven't yelled so much since he lost to Wakatakakage. I'd forgotten how much I want him to win the yusho.

I know he's unlikely to actually do it, and it doesn't mean much historically etc... but it would be such a lovely ending.

I will be very complimentary if he manages it, but I just don't believe he's got it in him to stick at 1 loss, so it'll be in the play-off, probably against Onosato.

I sincerely hope not. They made that mistake in November and it's just come back to bite them. No need to double down.

Sometimes a ticking clock is what it takes for someone to pull it together mentally. This last year has been a time where Takayasu's health has consistently stayed shaky, and right now he looks like a guy hellbent on making use of his current form while he has it. His back might fall apart, but if there's a version of him that won't choke, it's this one.

A 13-2 will give Onosato more 13-win performances (top division) than Hoshoryu, and as many 12+. That's in eight bashos vs. twenty-eight. You may not think it should be the start of a rope run, but Hoshoryu's quick promotion isn't a good reason to be against it.
