M17W Benihana may benefit from J4W Oshoumi.

In Juryo, Oshoumi has 44 wins and 44 losses. Those knowing Japanese superstition will know that this does not bode well.....

However, it also means that he has a total of 88 recorded records in Juryo. Those knowing Japanese superstition will know that this bodes very well.....

out of 14 participations.

We have been going on for that long? Wow.

Edit: I would love to see a stats page for all players. But that's probably a wild dream.

S1E Baku (my oldest son) will battle with M1W Wakamotoharu.

Wakamotoharu has never had a 7-8 or an 8-7 record in his 19 bashos in the Makunouchi Division! (I think my favourite rikishi fact, so far this Sekitori Sweepstake basho.)

M7E Reonito will reckon with J5W Fujiseiun

Fujiseiun has won a 7-0 yusho in all the five lower divisions, except for Jonidan, where he managed a 7-0 jun-yusho (after a play-off loss).

M5E Kaito will be inspecting M5E Ura.

Ura is Kaito's 'twin rank' and was Sumo Forum's favourite rikishi for 2024....  and is probably in the finals for the favourite rikishi for 2025.

M18E Joaoiyama might get some joy from.... J1E Tamashoho.

Tamashoho is back in Juryo after a one-basho sojourn to Makunouchi. Looking to press the up-button on the elevator?

M10W Sumo Spiffy will go into battle with M4E Takayasu.

Takayasu has EIGHT Makunouchi jun-yushos to his name! (Possibly a record for rikishi that have never won the Makunouchi yusho? How to check?)

M1E Flohru will be up and at it with M2E Gonoyama.

Gonoyama has 7 career wins by 'fusen' (freebie win) - including twice in one basho. Does he scare his opponents from even turning up?

Posted

M3W TheGunbaiHolder will be watching M8E Atamifuji.

Atamifuji has spent the previous seven bashos in the joi-jin (but has never made it to the sanyaku).

O2E Gusoyama starts his Ozeki career with..... M5W Kinbozan.

Kinbozan's last four bashos have been..... 4-11, 4-11, 12-3 and 12-3. A rollercoaster rikishi?

Off-topic for your thread but a simple query reveals only Yokozuna and Ozeki have ever reached 8 JY. None of these Yokozuna retired without a yusho. Of those at Ozeki at the time:

Kisenosato reached 12 JY before finally recording 2 Y and promotion.

Kaio and Konishiki, the two closest to Yokozuna without reaching it, each recorded a rough handful of JY before winning basho.

Kotomitsuki started with his sole yusho then spent 8 years recording 8 JY and reaching Ozeki.

Takakeisho and Takanonami each interspersed their JY with yusho.

That leaves only (Ozeki) Yutakayama on the list. Takayasu is tying his record of 8 JY without a Y, although their careers were very different. Only 7.5 years in sumo for the former, a uni grad, with 3 Ms basho, 2 in Juryo, 3 JY from his entire 7-basho career in makuuchi below Ozeki, and then 4 years spent at Ozeki collecting the next 5 JY before retiring. Retiring shortly after a good run of results, with his only kyujo being partial and over a year beforehand - but after confirmation of kadoban demotion.

In comparison, Takayasu's 20+ year career is vastly different - joining roughly 8.5 years younger, he took 5 more years to make Juryo then half a year to reach the top div. After more than a year there he collects his first JY - but it would take 5 more years for the 2nd and 3rd - at Ozeki rank. The 4th would be his last there, then nearly 3.5 years more before his recent spate of 4 more JY would be earned - without a return to Ozeki. Takayasu is the only rikishi who can claim to have earned a 6th, 7th or 8th JY while below the rank of Ozeki (no-one else here has earned more after demotion).

No, you can't get another spin on the wheel.

OMG, I’m DOOMED!  Rather than wear the rope, I fear it will be transformed into a noose!
