Most wins of the year (restricted to makuuchi) was already awarded at the last basho of the year, by the Kyushu local Nishi-Nippon shimbun, for 66 makuuchi wins, one more than Onosato, the first time Kotozakura got this award.

handed over by the company president

and as usual Kotozakura also got the Hochi best rikishi of the year award https://www.hochi.co.jp/award/rikishi/2024.html

(Hochi hasn't properly updated the page from that of last year, where Kirishima won it - Kotozakura's results are listed as Kirishima's)

the first for a Kotozakura - his grandfather didn't get this award.

He and Onosato were the candidates for the award, Onosato has joint (with Terunofuji) most yusho of the year and only one win less, but that one win was decisive. Kotozakura also had a ketteisen 13-2 D and 5 basho as ozeki in his favour. In the end the vote was 3-2 for Kotozakura o

Congratulations at the heya

The NikkanSP unofficial awards picked Onosato for several varieties

202412230000325-w200_1.jpgo 202412230000325-w200_2.jpgo

The speedster award: 4.46s average time for a win - with 2nd most of the year, 15 more than no.2 Abi with 4.76s avarage, and also top for bouts in general: 4.6s average in 88 bouts, Abi with 5.06 in 87. Shodai is surprisingly high up in the rankings here.

Also top in the Oshi-special award - oshidashi and oshitaoshi wins: 28+3= 31, 2nd Tamawashi with 22+5

202412230000325-w200_3.jpgo

And also top (very debatable) in the combined spirited rikishi rankings: 44 times in the top 3, 12 at no.1, 18 at no.2, 14 at 3 - but no doubt actually Ura should get this: 18 times no.1, 15 times no.2 and 3 at 3

Regular is like last year:

The Chuspo Best newcomer of the year award  of course went to Onosato, the perfect newcomer, not just this year: Hatsu basho new makuuchi, Kyushu new ozeki and 2 yusho in between.

he aims for higher - "Not just on the banzuke, in all respects"

Next at the 13th NikkanSp Ozumo Grand Awards: kensho

46 bouts this year with a million Yen in hand: a pack of 34 kensho envelopes, containing 30 000 Yen each (another 30 000 for later/taxes)

Abi had 2 of these bouts and won them both, to get the "1000 gold coins with one grab" award. Also Takayasu, Takanosho and Shodai managed this - Abi stands out with the speed in which he got that: 7s combined for these 2 bouts, 105 kensho - 3.15 million yen - 450 000 yen per second. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202412250000376.html

420 kensho this year for him: about 2874 yen cash per second for his time fighting on the dohyo

On the other side, the kensho one didn't get - the top 5 of missed kensho opportunities

Kotozakura missed out on 739 kensho (but he got 1503 this year), 2nd Kirishima with 600 not (and only got 484), Hoshoryu (598/973) Atamifuji (554/406), Tobizaru (526/283)

202412270000187-w1300_3.jpgo

- Oshoma should be not far away - he only got 205 kensho and had quite a lot on his bouts

Kotozakura also had the most million yen bouts, 22, and he won 12 of them - actually he should get the grab the gold award, but that emphasises the winning percentage of these bouts.

- another  debatable one, to have Kotozakura get it, though Hoshoryu had the least movements without having that guaranteed

Geez, something that small ... they should have just mailed it.

I know the president looks small, but he probably wouldn't fit in the mail.
