Jonosuke Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 (edited) Maegashira East Lead Dejima, 30, of Musashigawa Beya has withdrawn from the Kyushu Basho as of Day 3. He separated his left calf (muscles) during Wakanosato bout on Day 2. This is Dejima's eighth kyujo, the first since the Nagoya Basho last year. Dejima became the first sekitori to go on kyujo this basho. Kotonowaka will get a Fusensho on Day 3. Edit: I added a clarification - calf "muscles" as that's just about the only thing you can separate from your calf. Edited November 16, 2004 by Jonosuke
Asashosakari Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 (edited) :-P He did seem to land a bit awkwardly after being dropped by Sato yesterday, but I didn't expect that. :-/ Let's hope he recovers in two months' time, or that'll be it for his career... Zenjimoto Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 I am very worried... it sounds like a complete relapse of what has bugged him so much the past years. Separation of calf muscle perhaps Kaikitsune can elaborate on, but if its the muscle separating from the bone (?) then it sounds terrible :-P Really very sad, I support the guy and was real happy when he made it back to Sekiwake, etc. He may indeed hang it up if its as bad as I suspect it is... :-/ Tears, Zenjimoto
Naifuzan Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 Is there gonna be a kyujo watch as a headline on the forum this basho as well?
Onnagumo Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 Poor Dejima.... :-/ I really hope you are too pessimistic, Zenjimoto-zeki, but it sure doesn't sound good.... :-P
Tomoe Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 If it is a sort of tendon rupture, especially of the Achilles tendon ;-) this might be the end of Dejima's career. But a "simple" rupture of a muscle fibre will cause much pain for poor Dejima, but things like this heal in an appropriate time (4-6 weeks with good care). Let's hope the best!
aderechelsea Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 not a very uncommon injury but very bad for a sumo wrestler ....
Elenrian Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 I afraid it is really serious... At first, I thought it was only a "normal" injury, and he couls be able to come back in a few weeks... But if it is about the Achille tendon, the injury is worst than I expected!!! (Depressed...) Well, he is 30... I don't know if he has enough willpower to come back and fight again... If the injury is as serious as you say, I fear he retires soon... He is not my favorite rikishi, but I enjoyed somtimes his style... but I will certainly miss him!!! A basho without Dejima is not a normal basho!! He was already in Makuuchi when I started interesing me in sumo... (Laughing...)
Jakusotsu Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 Now please calm down all of You and don't feed the worms. Nowhere has it been even mentioned that a tendon is afflicted. I'd still go with the "simple" rupture of a muscle fibre, as Tomoe put it.
Kintamayama Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 (edited) Tendon or katsudon, the close up of his bandaged feet after the loss, and the way he shuffled out does not bode well. Even before this and all of last basho, he looked like he was coming apart at the seams. He did get a good result last basho, but just watching him grimace after every match was ouch. Same goes for Aminishiki and Ushiomaru, though the latter seems to be hanging in there, thanks to his low rank.. Whoever watches the feed can easily see these guys need a break fast. Kaihayaiha Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 He is not my favorite rikishi, but I enjoyed somtimes his style... He is my favourite! (Depressed...)
Kaikitsune Makoto Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 The word "separation" always brings horrific images of completely divided muscle which is an extreme case of muscle injury. Dejima has had calf tears before too and I seriously doubt he injured his achilles tendon. Looked too comfortable for that. Dejima is a real trooper and doesn't show his pain to full degree I am sure but having witnessed some achilles tendon injuries, it doesn't fit in in this case no matter what...
Jonosuke Posted November 16, 2004 Author Posted November 16, 2004 I've just read several reports filled in later that said what Dejima suffered was "partial tears of calf muscles" as Kai-zeki articulated, requiring about six weeks of recovery time. So barring any relapse, he could come back for the Hatsu Basho with little less training time than others.
Shomishuu Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 I've just read several reports filled in later that said what Dejima suffered was "partial tears of calf muscles" I had a partial achilles tear last year umpiring a ball game but it FELT like it was in the calf area and I was able to "shuffle" off the field so who knows, especially this early on. IF it is a tendon, he'll miss at least one basho, and at his age, it may still be curtains. Echoing Elenrian...not my favorite but I would miss him because he's carved his own niche and no one else can fill it. (Eh?)
Kishinoyama Posted November 17, 2004 Posted November 17, 2004 (edited) How much longer can he go with all of these injuries? I don't think I can ever remember a rikishi with so many leg injuries. (Eh?) Edited November 17, 2004 by Whitney
