Please. Onokuni went 15-0 / 12-3 / 13-2 there.

Good point. I didn't look back three basho in my search. Still, the banzuke hasn't been without a Yokozuna in 31 years, and there must have been a reason Terunofuji tried to hang on for so long. Doesn't that give some indication of how the committee might feel about things? Hoshoryu already has a yusho and no disciplinary issues that I'm aware of, so I don't think the ghost of Futahagora should bother anyone.

They said before the basho Hoshoryu had to get the yusho. They could always change their minds, but there hasn't been a promotion without at least one yusho in the run for longer than there hasn't been a Yokozuna.

Any sansho hopes/predictions?

Tamawashi if 10-5.  Would be almost perfectly parallel to Kyokutenho's last sansho.

A most generous offering this time.

It is. Must be New Year's.

I know Oho and Mudoho are both grandsons of Taiho, but are they brothers? And if Oho pulls it off miraculously, would they be the first siblings with a yusho in the same basho?

Wow, they would be the same age to the day for their prize, 40y 71d.

All Takatoriki's sons - they have a thread, together with Kamatani

There are 4 Nayas, sons of Takatoriki and grandsons of Taiho: the first went to pro-wrestling, the 2nd, Takamori Naya, about whom this thread originally was, has already graduated from Saitama Sakae High School and entered the Chuo university sumo club (see above) - the 3rd is now in his 2nd year at Saitama Sakae High: Kounosuke Naya (16, 188cm, 150kg)
In 1st year middle school when he started keiko at the Saitama Sakae sumo club he had over 60% body fat, now it's 40-45%.
His coach: "A bright future, he'd aim for yokozuna/ozeki as a pro."

Mudoho and Oho in the Saitama Sakae team

On 03/08/2017 at 18:21, Akinomaki said:

Fortunately the other 3 Nayas are in (amateur) sumo, the 2 youngest are now in high school - and hopes for the Saitama Sakae team. 3rd year Kounosuke (right, 190cm, 160kg) is the team captain for the upcoming inter-high, Kousei (185cm, 130kg) is 1st year now.

The 2 in primary school had very bad eating habits, no vegetables etc., and didn't show promising results then. Saitama Sakae coach Yamada brought the obese Kounosuke into shape - he couldn't even get out of a car without help: "Like that I'd definitely be sick now. Lucky that I left home." Kounosuke won the national select high school tournament in March, Kousei last year was in the best 8 of the national middle school championships. Kounosuke: "I want to perform well in makuuchi and inherit granddad's and dad's Otake-beya." Kousei: "I want to test my strength in ozumo, like my revered dad."

Yamada: "Kounosuke is fit enough to succeed in ozumo, Kousei I'll forge from now on."

Not much is heard from 2nd son Takamori at Chuo university.

Naya (in sumo) is the eldest (and worst), and thus keeper of the name

Too bad it wasn't to be. :-(

As for the schedule shenanigans, it really just looks to me like the rationale in placing the Kinbozan-Oho bout where it ended up was "not before Takerufuji-Kirishima". And honestly, kudos to them for even considering that a crowd-pleasing deviation from the normal order might make sense here.

Another theory: to prevent Kinbozan entering the hall before the break, i.e. before the NHK broadcast started?

I had a serious look at my crystal balls today. A messy three way playoff. Don't know who, as the balls immediately collided with each other and disappeared.

Three way playoff.

No applause? No bowing?

What an incredible showing of mental strength by Hoshoryu. 3 in a row with solid fortitude and that brash confidence of his. Amazing.
